Chapter 3: The Poison in the Cup
1.2k words
Shadows stretched long and distorted across the walls of the isolated lounge.
Faint, crimson emergency lights throbbed in rhythm with Yujin’s frantic heartbeat, painting the room in a bloody hue.
Cold air seeped through the cracks of the locked steel doors, smelling of old iron and copper-tinged doom.
---
"There has to be a way out," Jiwoong muttered, his breath coming in short, white puffs.
Panicked eyes scanned the dark corners of the room, looking for any vulnerability in their steel prison.
Beside him, Hao was shivering, his fingers dug deep into the velvet of a nearby sofa to keep from collapsing.
"Look at the window," Jiwoong commanded, pointing a trembling finger toward the massive glass pane.
Rain lashed against the exterior, silent but relentless behind the thick barrier.
Darkness swallowed the forest outside, making the trees look like jagged teeth waiting to swallow them whole.
"We can break it," Taerae suggested, his voice tight with desperation.
"No, it's reinforced," Matthew countered, hugging his knees to his chest.
"Everything in this godforsaken hotel is a trap designed to keep us here."
Jiwoong ignored the warning, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked.
Stepping toward the heavy marble fireplace, he grabbed a solid bronze statue of a crying cherub.
Veins bulged along his forearms as he hoisted the heavy metal figure.
"Get back!" Jiwoong roared, his voice bouncing off the high ceilings.
He swung the heavy bronze statue with all his remaining strength.
Aiming directly for the center of the glass, he threw his entire body weight into the strike.
A dull, heavy thud echoed through the silent room.
Instead of the satisfying sound of shattering glass, a horrific crack of bone rang out.
Jiwoong screamed, a high-pitched sound of pure agony that tore through the lounge.
Dropping the statue, he collapsed to his knees on the hard floor.
His right wrist bent outward at a sickening, broken angle.
White bone nearly broke through the skin, swelling instantly into a purple, bruised mess.
"Oh my god!" Matthew shrieked, scrambling backward in terror.
Hao rushed forward, kneeling in the dark to support Jiwoong’s shaking frame.
"Don't touch it, don't touch it!" Jiwoong gasped, tears streaming down his pale cheeks.
Yujin stared at the window, his eyes wide and vacant.
Unmarred, pristine, and completely scratch-free, the glass remained a perfect mirror.
It reflected their terror back at them, a cruel reminder of their absolute isolation.
"We're going to die here," Taerae whispered, sliding down against the wall.
"Nobody is coming for us."
---
Panic settled in the air like a heavy, suffocating fog.
Yujin curled into himself, his knees pulled tight against his chest.
Tremors racked his small frame, his teeth chattering so loud he feared they would break.
"Shh, it's alright, my sweet boy," a smooth voice whispered near his ear.
Ricky knelt beside him, his movements incredibly calm amidst the surrounding hysteria.
Warm fingers brushed against Yujin's cheek, wiping away a stray tear with gentle pressure.
"Don't look at them," Ricky murmured, his gaze locked onto Yujin with an intense, burning focus.
"They are weak. But you don't have to be afraid. I am right here."
Gyuvin stepped out of the dark, his tall figure standing like a protective wall.
His dark eyes held no fear, only a strange, chilling satisfaction.
Reaching down, he brushed his hand over Yujin’s hair, his touch firm and possessive.
"We won't let anything hurt you, Yujin," Gyuvin promised, his voice low and hypnotic.
"You just need to trust us. Only us."
Yujin swallowed hard, his throat dry and burning.
"I... I can't breathe," he whimpered, flinching away from their suffocating proximity.
"My chest... it hurts."
"I know, darling," Ricky said softly, his voice dripping with affection.
He reached behind him, picking up a steaming porcelain cup from a silver tray.
"I made this just for you. Hot chamomile tea. It will make all the pain go away."
Sweet herbal scent drifted into the air, masking a faint, chemical bitterness.
Ricky held the cup to Yujin's lips, his eyes wild with an unspoken, desperate hunger.
"Drink it, Yujin. Every single drop. Let me take care of you."
"Drink it," Gyuvin echoed, his hand tightening on Yujin’s shoulder.
"It will make you sleep. When you wake up, all of this will be over."
Yujin stared into the dark liquid, a strange instinct screaming inside his head.
Something felt wrong. The warmth of the cup felt like a gilded cage.
Yet, the sheer weight of their gazes pinned him to the floor, leaving him paralyzed.
"I don't... I don't want it," Yujin whispered, trying to push Ricky's hand away.
"Please, Ricky."
"Don't be difficult, Yujin," Ricky urged, his tone shifting slightly, a sharp edge cutting through.
"We only want what is best for you. Now, drink."
Just as the rim touched Yujin's lower lip, a sudden commotion shattered the tension.
Matthew, still sobbing and backing away from Jiwoong's groans, tripped over a loose rug.
Lurching forward, his shoulder slammed hard into Ricky’s arm.
The porcelain cup flew out of Ricky’s hand.
It shattered against the hardwood floor, splashing hot liquid everywhere.
"Watch out!" Gunwook yelled, pulling Matthew back.
A sharp, violent hiss erupted from the floorboards.
Yujin’s eyes widened as he stared at the spilled chamomile tea.
Bubbles formed on the dark wood, boiling and spitting like a miniature volcano.
Thick, gray smoke curled upward, carrying a toxic, burning odor.
Before their eyes, the heavy varnish on the floorboards blistered, blackened, and dissolved.
The liquid ate straight through the solid oak, leaving a charred, smoking crater.
"What the hell..." Matthew whispered, staring at his own hands in shock.
"That... that was tea."
"Acid," Gunwook breathed, his face drained of color.
"That would have melted your throat, Yujin."
Yujin recoiled, scrambling backward until his head hit the solid mahogany wall.
His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"You..." Yujin looked up at Ricky, his voice trembling.
"You tried to kill me?"
Ricky didn't answer immediately.
Instead, his expression shifted from gentle concern to a cold, blank mask.
Slowly, his lips curled upward into a dark, mocking grin.
Gyuvin let out a low, amused chuckle, stepping up beside Ricky.
"Kill you?" Ricky asked, his voice dripping with a terrifying sweetness.
"Why would we ever kill our most precious prize?"
"We just wanted to put you to sleep," Gyuvin explained, reaching into his heavy coat pocket.
"Just a little nap so we could carry you away from all this noise."
Silver flashed in the crimson emergency light.
Yujin’s breath caught.
Both Gyuvin and Ricky now held long, gleaming hunting knives, their blades reflecting the bloody hue.
"Stay back!" Taerae yelled, stepping in front of Yujin, but his voice shook violently.
"Don't interfere," Ricky warned, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register.
He flipped the heavy knife in his hand with practiced ease.
"This is a private game," Gyuvin added, his smirk widening as he began to step forward.
Slowly, the two wealthy heirs began to move in a predatory circle around the remaining group.
Matthew whimpered, clutching his bruised arm.
Hao tried to drag the semi-conscious, groaning Jiwoong away, but they were cornered.
"You guys are insane," Gunwook spat, looking for anything to use as a weapon.
"Insane?" Ricky laughed, a melodic, chilling sound.
"We are the only ones who can save him."
"The world is ending outside, but in here, we control the rules."
"He belongs to us," Gyuvin said, his eyes fixed solely on Yujin's trembling form.
"We bought this place. We built this trap."
"And we will keep him, even if we have to bleed all of you to do it."
Yujin felt the world spinning.
The realization crashed over him like an icy wave.
The monster wasn't just outside.
The monster was the very hands that had offered him comfort.
Desperate to pull himself away from their advances, Yujin dragged himself backward along the floor.
His fingers brushed against the smoking edge of the ruined floorboards where the tea had eaten through.
Something small, cold, and glass rolled against his knuckles.
Squinting through the dim red light, Yujin looked down into the narrow gap beneath the melted floorboards.
Underneath the melted floorboards, Yujin spots a tiny, discarded vial of industrial-grade sedative bearing the exact crest of Gyuvin's family pharmaceutical empire.
