Chapter 1: Summoned to Shattered Skies

1.4k words

Snow exploded around him. A dizzying rush stole his balance, then a harsh reality slammed into Arsam. Cold air bit his exposed skin. He blinked, vision blurring through a sudden onslaught of white flakes and black ash. Sounds roared. A cataclysmic crack split the sky, followed by a shower of burning debris. His ears rang. Acrid smoke clawed at his throat. Disoriented, Arsam coughed. One moment, he was… well, he wasn't anywhere. The next, he was here. A new place. Definitely a new place. And quite loud. Rubbing his temples, he tried to clear his head. A faint, almost imperceptible tingle ran through his fingertips. He felt… different. Lighter, perhaps? More aware? "Whoa," he muttered, his voice swallowed by the gale. A shard of ancient stone, glowing with an internal, dying ember, zipped past his ear. It crashed into the ground, kicking up more dust and snow. Another piece of debris, larger this time, spiraled downwards. A section of what looked like a collapsing ancient tower, an ice-encrusted spire, rained crystalline fragments. One particularly jagged shard of ice, sharp as a dagger, hurtled straight for his face. It spun, reflecting the faint, sickly glow of burning ruins. Instinct, cold and swift, shot through Arsam's bare palm. He didn't think. He just acted. His hand snapped up. Subtly, almost imperceptibly, the ice shard veered. It didn't strike him. It didn't even touch his skin. Instead, it arced sharply, shattering against a crumbling wall just behind his head, dissolving into a fine mist. Arsam blinked again. Did he just…? He shook his head. No time for that. Survival first. Always survival. Suddenly, the very air thickened. A vast shadow, hungry and ancient, descended from above. It was a claw. Gigantic. Darker than pitch, absorbing the meager light filtering through the storm-choked clouds. A primal scream hitched in Arsam's throat. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of pure terror. That claw was bigger than a house. It moved with a terrifying, crushing finality. Yet, beneath the terror, a strange spark ignited. Curiosity, sharp and undeniable, pierced through the dread. This was… incredible. Horrifying, yes. But incredibly, fantastically *real*. He watched, frozen, as the gargantuan appendage swept low. Wind shrieked around him, the sheer force of its passage ripping at his simple tunic. The ground shuddered. A nearby section of the tower groaned, then buckled, showering more stone and ice. Barely missing him by a hair's breadth, the claw tore through the air where he had stood moments before. It was fast. Too fast. He dove, instinctively, rolling over a heap of shattered masonry. Another roar tore through the sky, closer this time. He scrambled to his feet, eyes scanning the devastation. Buildings, once proud and soaring, were now skeletal remains, black against the oppressive gray sky. Smoke billowed from every direction. Fires raged in the distance, painting the horizon in angry hues of orange and red. The ground beneath his feet was a patchwork of frost and scorched earth. Desolation defined the landscape. Arsam couldn't help but crack a nervous grin. "Well, this is certainly a welcome," he mumbled, his voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline coursing through him. "Quite the reception party." Nobody answered. Only the incessant wail of the wind and the groan of collapsing structures accompanied him. He was alone. Utterly, completely alone, in a world that seemed intent on tearing itself apart. He pushed himself further, moving away from the immediate impact zone of the shadowy claw. His steps were light, almost bouncy, a stark contrast to the heavy devastation surrounding him. He navigated around a massive crater, its edges still smoking. Observing the destruction, he noted the scale. This wasn't a skirmish. This was an apocalypse. Whatever had caused this, it was immense. And it was still happening. He felt a strange lightness in his chest. No familiar faces. No expectations. Just the raw, exhilarating freedom of being utterly unknown. A fresh start. Even if that start came amidst ruin. A strange warmth began to spread through his left hand. He looked down. His palm, still tingling from the ice shard deflection, glowed with a faint, internal light. He quickly closed his fist, extinguishing the subtle luminescence. What was that? A trick of the light? Or something else entirely? His mind raced, cataloging the strange events. Feeling a strange pull, he found himself drawn towards a particularly large, jagged chunk of what looked like the ancient tower's spire. It lay half-buried in the snow, its surface still shimmering with latent, cold energy. He approached it cautiously. His bare feet crunched on the frozen ground. The air grew colder here, a palpable chill radiating from the fallen spire. He reached out a hesitant hand, almost touching its icy surface. Withdrawing quickly, he shivered. The cold was intense, but it wasn't unpleasant. There was a peculiar connection. A resonance. As if the ice itself was whispering secrets he couldn't quite decipher. He frowned, his cheerful mask slipping for a moment. This world was dying, yes. But it was also alive with possibilities. With secrets. And perhaps, with things far more dangerous than collapsing towers or shadowy claws. Arsam took a deep breath, the icy air filling his lungs. It tasted of ash and ozone. He scanned the horizon again, his eyes narrowing. Where did he go from here? What was this place called? And more importantly, what was happening? He saw shapes in the distance. Not buildings, but movement. Large, dark figures. More of those claws, perhaps? Or something else entirely? His heart picked up its pace again, but this time, it was more anticipation than dread. "Alright, new world," he announced to the empty, desolate landscape, his voice carrying surprising strength. "Show me what you've got." He took a step forward, then another, moving towards the distant figures. His bare hands were ready. His mind, though disoriented, was buzzing with a strange, vibrant energy. This was his beginning. A chaotic, destructive beginning, but a beginning nonetheless. --- Arsam walked for what felt like hours, though time seemed to lose all meaning amidst the relentless blizzard and the constant threat of collapsing structures. He hugged himself, wishing for a warmer garment than his thin tunic. Still, his usual optimism refused to waver. He discovered more ruins. Entire districts reduced to rubble. It was a kingdom, perhaps. A grand one, judging by the intricate carvings on the few remaining walls. But now, it was a tomb. Small details caught his eye. A child's doll, half-buried in the snow. A broken sword, its hilt still gripping a skeleton hand. These were grim reminders of the lives that had been extinguished here. His cheerful facade remained, a shield against the overwhelming despair of the scene. He needed to be useful. He needed to find someone. Anyone. His biggest fear was being alone, unneeded. He kept moving, driven by an inexplicable urge to find out more, to understand. The wind howled its mournful song. The snow continued to fall, attempting to bury the wounds of the land beneath a fresh, white blanket. Suddenly, the ground beneath him trembled. Not a gentle vibration, but a violent shudder that nearly knocked him off his feet. A distant, guttural roar echoed across the plains, shaking the very air. He looked up, peering through the swirling snow. Far, far in the distance, a colossal, dark shape blotted out the sky. It was the shadowy claw again, or perhaps its owner. A sense of overwhelming power radiated from it. Arsam didn't hesitate. He changed direction, moving away from the source of the roar. Caution, he decided, was a virtue. Especially when facing something that could swat him like a fly. He found a sliver of shelter behind a leaning archway, its ancient stone still miraculously intact. Leaning against it, he tried to catch his breath. The cold seeped into his bones, but a different kind of heat was building inside him. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to ground himself. This was his new reality. A world of ice, ash, and colossal monsters. He had to adapt. He had to survive. He had to find his place. As the dust settled, Arsam felt a burning sensation on his back, a faint glow emanating from beneath his tunic, hinting at a secret he wasn't yet aware of.
