Chapter 3 of 10
Plus One

The emergency lights flickered on, casting long, distorted shadows as Marcela tugged Bastian through the narrow access tube. The metallic tang of dust and ozone filled the confined space. They emerged into a forgotten utility corridor, a relic of San Velez’s older infrastructure, where maintenance drones hummed faintly overhead. Marcela didn't pause, her steps quick and purposeful, leading him through a labyrinth of identical grey doors until she stopped before one marked 'Janitorial Access – Sector 7B'.
“Standard maintenance door,” she murmured, her voice a low current of determination. “Except it’s not.” A quick scan of her thumbprint on an invisible panel, followed by a sequence of complex neural pings, and the heavy door hissed open to reveal not a cleaning closet, but a stark, brilliantly lit chamber. It was a clandestine workspace, dominated by holographic displays projecting intricate signal schematics, their azure lines pulsing with quiet energy. Racks of custom servers hummed with a deep, resonant thrum that vibrated through the floor. This was no ordinary safehouse; it was a sanctuary forged from code.
“Welcome to the ‘Nest’,” Marcela said, stepping inside. She shed her jacket, tossing it onto a worn ergonomic chair, revealing the tailored lines of her undershirt. “My mother’s life work. My legacy. My only leverage against Ignacio.”
Bastian surveyed the room, his gaze lingering on a particularly ancient server chassis tucked away in a corner. Its design, though modified, carried the faint echo of an early system framework. He recognized the robust, almost over-engineered protocols that would have made it unassailable by current electronic-warfare standards. Marcela watched him, her brow furrowed with curiosity. “You recognize that model?”
“Seen a few like it in the Basin Boroughs, scavenged for parts,” Bastian lied smoothly, his voice flat. He pointed to a projected topology on a central display. “This mesh… it’s clean. Too clean. Like it was built before the great compromise.”
Marcela’s eyes brightened, a genuine spark in their depths. “Exactly. My mother believed in an uncompromised mesh, impervious to the corporate-syndicate parasitism that infests San Velez’s grid now. She built this, piece by piece, before… before she passed. Ignacio and his ilk, they want to bury it, because it threatens their entire ecosystem of compromised data streams and controlled information.” She paced, her movements tight with contained energy. “They thrive on the chaos. On the exploitation of everyone below the Apex Ward. Every byte of their wealth is built on digital rot.”
Bastian felt a familiar, cold anger stir within him. “I know the type,” he said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “They take everything. Then they erase you from existence.” The words hung in the air, weighted with a shared understanding that went beyond mere professional contract. He met her gaze, a flicker of something raw and unmasked passing between them before he retreated behind his impassive runner's demeanor.
“We need to bring more nodes online,” Marcela stated, breaking the silence. “The primary server for the Velez-Kinetic grid, it’s housed at the ‘Ascension Gala’ tonight. Ignacio will be there, no doubt flaunting some new acquisition. It’s my only chance to access it without tripping every alarm in his cyber-security web.”
“A gala?” Bastian’s skepticism was evident. “They’ll be crawling with corporate fixers. And me in this?” He gestured to his grease-stained jacket.
Marcela smirked, a flash of mischievous defiance. “Don’t worry. I’ve got a solution for your… aesthetic. You’re coming as my plus-one. My ‘bodyguard’ for the evening. And you’re not to do anything. Just be seen. Look intimidating. And stay out of trouble.”
The Apex Ward’s Ascension Gala was a spectacle of shimmering wealth, a glass-and-chromatic tower piercing the perpetual twilight. Flutters of crystal and the glint of polished synth-silk greeted them. Bastian, encased in a rented suit that felt as foreign as a second skin, kept his posture rigid, his eyes scanning the opulent crowd. Marcela, transformed in an emerald gown that flowed like liquid light, moved through the throng with an almost regal air, her confidence a stark contrast to his carefully maintained anonymity.
Ignacio Cardenas spotted them across the grand hall. Flanked by two security enforcers in tailored silk, he raised a glass with a sneer. “Marcela! Still slumming it in the Basin, I see? And with hired muscle from the gutter, no less. Did you actually pay for that rental, or is it another one of your charity cases?” His voice, amplified by subtle aural implants, carried across the polished floors, drawing the attention of several nearby socialites.
Marcela’s smile remained fixed, but her eyes narrowed. “Ignacio. Always so eloquent. And you, still hiding behind your father’s name?”
Ignacio’s laugh was a brittle, sharp sound. “At least I have a name worth hiding behind. Unlike your… pet. Look, everyone! The destitute heiress, bringing her garbage-tier escort to the most exclusive event in San Velez! I bet he’s never even seen real synth-champagne.” He tapped his personal slate, thumb hovering over the interface. “Perhaps it’s time to remind you of your place, Marcela. I just had the mainframe here lock down your auxiliary trust accounts. Good luck funding your little transmission scheme now. And paying your lackey's rent.”
Bastian’s expression remained flat. He tracked Ignacio’s handheld unit, noting its sloppy handshake with the gala’s guest portal. A common point of failure for arrogant, overconfident elites. As Marcela retorted in a frigid drawl, Bastian leaned against a marble pillar, his knuckle grazing an exposed maintenance junction. His neural implant hummed, shunting a string of hexadecimal commands directly into the core bus. He skipped the public tier entirely, routing past standard security through dormant diagnostic pathways he had drafted himself a decade ago.
He felt the flow of data, saw the open backdoor Ignacio had used, and with a series of precise mental commands, he didn’t just reverse the lockout. He found Ignacio’s primary investment account, a vast, bloated sum tied to the Cardenas Holdings. With a few more mental keystrokes, a significant fraction of that wealth was anonymously rerouted, disbursed into a hundred micro-charities across the Basin Boroughs, funds earmarked for basic necessities, clean water, and legitimate data-access points.
Ignacio’s slate gave a sudden, shrill ping. The smirk vanished from his lips, his chin jerking back as blood drained from his cheeks. The message was simple, stark, and terrifying. Black text on a blood-red background.
[THE FOUNDATION IS WATCHING]
Ignacio stumbled back, nearly tripping over a gilded stand. The laughter died in his throat. A mythical label whispered in hushed tones, rumored to be the remnants of the system's dead pioneers who disappeared when the syndicates rose. A legend of brutal, surgical retribution against those who corrupted the root architecture. His fingers twitched, smearing grease across the screen in a failed bid to clear the prompt. This was no petty corporate sabotage. This was a direct threat, chilling to his core. He had pushed too far. He had drawn attention he couldn't afford.
He had to move. Now. He had to secure his position. His gaze fell upon Marcela, a desperate, frantic resolve hardening his features. The neural-wipe. He had to accelerate it. Immediately. Before the Foundation, or whatever monstrous ghost they had unwittingly provoked, could come for him. His legacy depended on it. His survival depended on it.
