Chapter 10 of 10
The Masquerade's End
1.1k words
The colossal Murk-Glass chandelier groaned, an iron-and-crystal shriek tearing through the conservatory as the projectile shredded its intricate ward-work. Dust motes, thick as swamp-fog, exploded from its core, swirling into a viscous, inky miasma. From this roiling darkness, tendrils of purest night began to coalesce, coiling like an abyssal serpent around the falling shards. A collective gasp, then a shriek, tore through the ballroom. The air plunged below freezing, carrying the tang of tomb dust as the rising horror drank from the parlor's panic.
Just as the beast's first gaping maw took form, the double doors at the far end of the ballroom burst inward. Lykora Morith strode through, her sequined pink gown shredded and soot-stained, her left arm a vitreous, translucent pane. She braced Vastor Yul against her side, dark blood soaking his trouser leg where the soul-rending dart had pierced muscle. Vastor kept his features rigid, his stare sweeping over the fractured tiles to lock onto Olenya, then onto the nascent titan.
“A little late for the grand reveal, aren’t we, dearest sister?” Lykora’s voice, though strained, carried an unnerving lilt of amusement. She pushed Vastor gently into the shelter of a weeping willow-glass pillar, then stepped forward, her glass arm catching the wan moonlight from the fractured ceiling, casting an eerie, fractured glow across her face. The titan writhed overhead, an enormous multi-mawed mass of swirling gloom and raw necrotic appetite.
Olenya, still standing center stage, pointed a shaking finger at Lykora. “There! The ghost! She brings this curse upon us all!” Her voice was shrill, desperate, yet still clinging to the threadbare remnants of her victim persona. Her eyes, however, held a feral gleam of triumph, convinced her ultimate weapon was unleashed.
Lykora merely smiled, a predatory curve of her lips that held no warmth. “A ghost, yes. But not the one you claim.” She spread her free hand, adorned with glittering rings, toward the leviathan. “You wanted a spectacle, Olenya? Fine. Let’s give them one they’ll never forget.”
Her voice dropped, shedding the bright, bubbly cadence of her heiress persona. It was the cadence of a master binder, cold and resonant, cutting through the titan's hum. “You bind this monstrosity with a sliver of your own essence, Darvess. A leeching conduit, feeding on your fear and your manufactured purity.” Lykora’s fingers danced, not weaving wards of defense, but tracing arcane symbols of rupture in the air. The surrounding mist curdled with gathering charge.
“No! What are you doing?!” Olenya shrieked, stumbling as an abrupt recoil from the apex phantom wrenched her posture forward. She staggered, clutching her chest.
Lykora’s eyes, normally sparkling with feigned innocence, burned with a cold, clear fire. “I’m showing them what you truly are, Olenya. Your manufactured fragility, your poisoned tears, your endless demand for pity… it’s all a feast for the beast you control.” Her words were a relentless hammer blow, each syllable tearing at Olenya's carefully constructed reality. With a final, sharp gesture, Lykora snapped her wrist, and a deafening *CRACK* echoed through the hall.
The towering entity roared, a sound like grinding tectonic plates drowned in screams. It was no longer a puppet; it was a mirror. The tether, meant to command, now inverted. Lykora had not severed the beast from Olenya, but twisted the binding, turning the beast’s consuming hunger *inward*. It writhed, no longer attacking the guests, but tearing at an invisible veil around Olenya. The air around Olenya rippled, then tore away in ragged wisps, stripping the pallid sheen of her feigned affliction.
What was revealed beneath was grotesque. Olenya’s skin seemed to sag, her eyes sunken, her once-delicate features contorted into a mask of pure, avaricious malice. Her hair thinned, her frame became gaunt, desiccated, like a corpse recently exhumed. The bound titan roared in triumph, its jaws descending to strip away every veneer of her curated innocence, leaving her true nature laid bare. A collective retch rose from the horrified elite, their faces pale with disgust, not fear.
“Look at her,” Lykora commanded, her voice ringing with triumphant finality. “This is the truth of Olenya Darvess. A leech, feeding on your sympathy, on your ward-power, on your very lives.”
Olenya, now stripped of all artifice, collapsed to her knees, a guttural sob tearing from her throat. “No! It’s a trick! A hex!” She clawed at the air, her wild gaze sweeping past Duchess Vayle and the horrified patricians she had so carefully cultivated. “Help me! She’s mad! She’s the true monster!” Her tears flowed freely now, not the delicate, manipulative pearls of before, but thick, ugly rivulets of pure terror.
But the elite, their faces etched with revulsion, recoiled. Duchess Vayle, her hand pressed to her mouth, stumbled back, dragging her husband with her. There was no pity, only raw, unadulterated horror at the revealed truth.
Vastor Yul, his form radiating an icy resolve, pushed away from the pillar, drawing himself to his full height despite his injury. He limped forward, his gaze fixed on the cowering Olenya. “Olenya Darvess.” His voice, though quiet, was a death knell, silencing the last whimpers in the ballroom. “For crimes against Kholvarna, for the corruption of city wards, for the attempted mass soul-drain of this assembly, and for the illicit binding of a bound titan…” He paused, his expression utterly devoid of emotion, immune to her pathetic, blubbering pleas. “…I, Lord-Inquisitor Yul, formally place you under arrest.”
Two uniformed Inquisitors, who had been standing at attention near the doors, moved swiftly, their Murk-Glass manacles clicking shut around Olenya’s wrists. Her wails were meaningless now, swallowed by the sudden, stunned silence of the gala. The titan, its hunger spent upon her exposed deceit, dissolved into the low mist, leaving behind only fractured crystal and sulfur.
The Blood-Moon, crimson and bloated, began its slow descent below the horizon. As its last, fading light touched Lykora, a warmth spread through her left arm. The Murk-Glass, which had encased her flesh, began to crackle and dissolve, flaking away like fine ash, revealing her restored, healthy skin beneath. The tethering curse, snapped at its anchor, dissolved forever.
Vastor reached for her, his injured hand gently cupping her chin, his eyes, no longer chilling, but filled with a profound depth she had only glimpsed before. He pulled her close, his breath warm against her ear. “Now, Lady Morith,” he whispered, his voice a low, resonant promise, “shall we show this city what a real ghost-binder can do?”
