The grease-stained vellum listing thirty-two contingency maneuvers ripped down the center, its neat grid of cross-referenced contingencies fluttering into the gutter of grease beneath the worktable. Veska did not bother picking up the scraps. Matrices could calculate bribe margins and chronomantic latency; they could not calculate an explosive cylinder clamped directly over the carotid artery of the Empire’s most terrifying soldier.
"We are not consulting the columns," Veska told the terrarium. Her tongue tangled on the syllables, tripping over the *c*, but her hands remained steady as she shoved a velvet pouch containing picks and a glass-cutter into her lining.
Slitch poked three milky eyes past the seam of her bodice, hissed a thread of yellow bile against her clavicle, and retreated into darkness.
Twenty minutes later, the air inside the Whispering Vaults tasted of dry limestone and pickled marrow. Veska crept along the basalt mezzanine, three levels beneath the Sunken Court’s grand drainage arches. Down here, the empire archived its stolen sovereign relics—items deemed too seditious to display and too volatile to melt down. If an unmaking-stylus existed that could crack the Penitent's Choker without sparking the unstable core inside its clasp, it sat in the reliquary of the Iron Archon.
She reached the vault grille. The seal was already cracked.
"You really ought to have drawn an eighth column for familial solidarity, little scullery mouse."
A voice like scraped slate echoed from the gloom.
Veska froze, her spine turning rigid against the cold granite column. Two figures emerged from behind the iron displays of preserved saint-hands. They wore identical tunics of boiled whalehide dyed ash-grey, their features mirrored down to the hooked bridge of their noses and the silver coils wound through their earlobes: Brax and Belise, the remaining two rulers of the family she was methodically trying to erase.
"Baron Yulog’s pantry lacks imagination," Belise said, toying with an azure prism suspended on a cord between pale knuckles. "Though his wine cellar provided an adequate vector for our chronomantic salts. A shame your mongrel lizard vomited in his cup before he could drink enough to rot his lungs."
"Y-you," Veska managed, forcing her voice down to the dry, bored cadence of the dead mistress she impersonated. "You were the ones... who bought the prophecy."
Brax laughed, a short bark that rattled the empty brass jars on the shelves. "Bought? No. We simply subsidized the ink. Do you know how cheap court seers become when you threaten to skin their apprentices? It required three sentences added to the contraband record: *The predator shall sever the usurper during the Frost-Fall.* Drastan was always meant to be our disposal mechanism. A feral hound with a royal warrant, perfectly aimed at anyone who pried into our treasury."
"Only he didn't tear you apart, did he?" the elder sister sneered, stepping closer. "He knelt. He let you hold the leash. The hound developed a soft belly for a stuttering handmaiden playing dress-up in silk."
A deafening crunch shattered the reinforced bronze portal behind them.
The double doors, three inches of spell-hardened pig iron, bowed inward with an ear-splitting shriek, then blew off their pivot pins. Mortar rained down in blinding grey sheets. Through the billowing pulverization stepped Drastan, black mantle shredded, his halberd absent, bare hands coated in crimson paste where the vault guards had tried to block the corridor.
His gaze ignored the twins entirely, finding Veska in the gloom. "I told you to remain at the manor."
"Y-you were supposed to be sleeping off the venom!" Veska shrieked, all noble pretense shattering into raw, panicked pitch. "I had a plan! I had an inventory retrieval plan!"
"Your plans leave out your own survival rate," he growled, closing the distance.
"How touching," the woman said, and snapped her thumbnail against the azure prism.
A high, piercing resonance tore through the subterranean air, vibrating directly at the frequency of the blackened metal collar around Drastan’s neck. The runes along the band blazed violent, sickening violet. The Lord Commander’s stride snapped mid-step; an awful cracking sound tore from his knees as they struck the stone floor with enough force to splinter flagstones.
Drastan arched backward, a strangled roar tearing past his teeth. The veins along his temples bulged into thick, blackened cords. The runic frequency didn't just suppress him; it commanded him.
"Rise, hound," Brax whispered, raising an open palm toward Veska. "Break the mouse’s neck. Fulfill the ledger's entry. Complete the circle."
Drastan’s body lurched upright, his limbs moving with unnatural, mechanical jerkiness. His hands hooked into iron talons, trembling violently as the enchantment dragged him toward Veska. But his skull strained against the command, tendons snapping tight along his jaw, thick red rivulets bursting from the corners of his eyes and leaking down his cheeks as sheer internal fury fought the magic’s grip.
"Run," Drastan rasped, the word tearing raw through a mouth full of blood.
"I cannot!" Veska babbled, backing up until her shoulder blades struck the cold relief of a tomb carving. Her hand dove into her gown, palms closing around the serrated, volatile key. "I came for the neutralizer—"
"There is no neutralizer!" he bellowed, his right boot taking a heavy, involuntary step toward her. The collar hummed with building heat, the air around his shoulders shimmering with dangerous thermic distortions. His hands reached out, hovering inches from her collarbones, his knuckles white with the strain of stopping his own muscles. "The key... it isn't an unlocker, Veska. Turn the stem twice. Turn it and ignite the core."
"No! It will vaporize you!"
"It will kill them too!" He coughed, thick crimson spattering her bodice. Another involuntary spasm jerked his palms forward, grazing the soft skin beneath her jaw. He wept red, his frame shaking like a siege engine pushed past failure. "Turn it! Let the prophecy have me! Do not let them make me tear you apart—turn it, Veska! Detonate the collar!"
