Chapter 1 of 10
The Price of a Single Drop
944 words
The last drop clung to the vial's rim, shimmering like a captured tear under the flickering glow-grub lamp. Tadek held the tiny, ornate glass bottle with a reverence usually reserved for sacred relics, his fingers trembling slightly. His sister, Otylia, coughed again from the cot in the corner, a wet, rattling sound that tore at the thin thread of his composure.
“Just a moment, sis,” Tadek called out, his voice pitched a little too high, a little too bright. He locked his gaze on the amber bead clinging to the glass, his vision blurring at the edges as his skill flared to life. Blue text flared, blindingly clear against the squalid, cramped room.
[Item: Sylva’s Respite Elixir (Diminished)]
[Grade: Uncommon]
[Effect: Moderately cleanses minor elemental toxins; provides temporary systemic stabilization (short duration).]
[Quantity: 0.05ml (Single drop)]
He ignored the efficacy. His gaze, hot and desperate, cut to the hidden line he’d memorized weeks ago.
[Infusion: Systemic Decay (Latent)]
[Time Remaining: 30 days]
Thirty days. The number had eaten into his thoughts like a parasitic vine, strangling every other concern. Otylia’s cough deepened, a strangled gasp for air. Her skin, already translucent, seemed to tighten further over her bones. Thirty days was a generous lie; she looked like she had thirty hours. He had secured this remnant of draught after two grueling weeks of scrounging, trading, and a near-fatal run-in with skitter-weavers in the Root-Ways below The Perch.
This drop wouldn’t even touch the sides of her illness. It was a palliative, a whisper of false hope. But it was all he had. Desperation curdled in his stomach, a bitter, metallic taste. He stared at the vial, then at Otylia’s drawn face. If only… if only he could make more.
The thought ignited. He had used his sight to dissect the raw sap of fallen flora, probe weaknesses in chitin, and gauge the rot in scavenged timber. What if he focused not on *what* the glass held, but *how* it had been spun together?
He squeezed his eyes shut, a headache blooming behind his temples. He leaned against the mental barrier, ignoring the liquid's name and chasing the blueprint behind its brew. Strain coiled tight behind his temples, taut as sinew pulled to snapping.
[Skill: Appraisal (Level 4) is evolving…]
The blue text flared, then vanished, replaced by an agonizing void. Tadek gritted his teeth, sweat beading on his forehead. His vision swam, and for a terrifying second, he thought he’d broken something irreversible inside himself.
Then, a new notification. Clearer. Sharper. More profound.
[Skill: Appraisal has evolved to Conceptual Echo (Level 1)!]
Air scraped his windpipe. What was… Conceptual Echo? He opened his lids, blood pounding in his thumbs, and refocused on the bottle.
[Item: Sylva’s Respite Elixir (Diminished)]
[Grade: Uncommon]
[Effect: Moderately cleanses minor elemental toxins; provides temporary systemic stabilization (short duration).]
[Quantity: 0.05ml (Single drop)]
He reached out, his mind grappling with the new ability. He could still see the details, but now… he could feel the *pattern* of it. The faint resonance of its creation. He pushed harder, willing the pattern, the *echo*, to manifest. A faint shimmer, like heat rising from sun-baked stone, appeared beside the original vial.
The shimmer thickened, curdling into solid glass. A pristine duplicate settled on the table, brimming with luminous fluid instead of a stray smudge. It was a phantom imprint forced into the present.
[Conceptual Echo activated!]
[Item: Sylva’s Respite Elixir (Echoed)]
[Grade: Uncommon]
[Effect: Moderately cleanses minor elemental toxins; provides temporary systemic stabilization (short duration).]
[Duration: 2 hours (Echoed items will vanish after this time)]
Two hours. Not permanent, but enough. His knees buckled under sudden slackness. He had an intact vial.
He snatched the echoed vial, his hands still shaking, and rushed to Otylia’s side. He uncorked it with frantic haste and carefully poured the glowing liquid into her parched lips. She choked at first, then swallowed, a slow, laborious process. Her eyes fluttered open, unfocused.
“Tadek…?” she whispered, her voice raspy.
“It’s okay, sis. Just a little more. Drink it all,” he urged, his own voice thick with emotion. The faint green pallor along her jaw receded beneath pale flush. Her chest rose and fell in longer, even strides, the wet click in her throat subsiding.
Within minutes, her eyelids drooped, and she slipped into a deep, peaceful sleep, the first he’d seen her truly have in weeks. Tadek sat beside her, the empty echoed vial clutched in his hand, tears blurring his vision. He had bought her a little more time. A little more peace.
He glanced at the *original* vial, still on the small table. Empty, scraped dry. The phantom twin had already faded back into thin air. He had to learn how to fix them in place, or this was merely borrowed breath.
A heavy blow rattled the dry pine planks. Tadek flinched, dropping his hands to his knees. The noise of The Perch had swallowed the footfalls. Before he could respond, the door creaked open, admitting a sliver of the city’s perpetual gloom, and the imposing figure of Waclaw.
Waclaw, leader of the Stonejaw faction, was a block of a man, all scarred leather and unyielding muscle. His eyes, the color of wet slate, swept across the cramped room, taking in Otylia’s still form, the meager cot, the glow-grub lamp, and finally, Tadek himself. His gaze lingered on the small table, specifically on the empty original vial of Sylva's Respite.
Waclaw set his teeth, skin taut across his cheekbones. “That brew,” he rumbled, rattling the loose floorboards, “was promised to three of my wounded. Account for it, boy, before I make you regret lifting from our stores.”
