Chapter 9 of 10
Forging a New Cage

Kasyana’s scream tore through the frigid air, raw and desperate. Yet, even as her throat rasped, a tiny, brutal corner of her mind observed the scene with cold calculation. The torrent of black-glass light, Ozhin’s very essence, thickened, spiraling upward like a venomous serpent toward Bozidar. His face, illuminated by the unholy glow, was a mask of ecstatic triumph. He was so focused on the ascending power, on the climax of his centuries-long machinations, that he barely registered the shift in Kasyana’s posture.
Her feigned terror vanished, replaced by a grim clarity. Bozidar used her proximity as a conduit, a soul-catalyst to funnel Ozhin’s apocalyptic power. But what if the conduit wasn’t just *near* him? What if it *was* him? What if she could merge their lifelines, hijack the flow, and make her soul the anchor, not the sacrifice?
Her gaze snapped to the shadow-gold cuffs, discarded in the churned snow just moments before. A brutal, impossible plan solidified. She lunged, a desperate, frantic scramble over the torn earth. Ozhin, even as his colossal form shuddered, even as his soul was ripped from him, still tried to reach for her, a dying, protective reflex. He was too slow, paralyzed by Bozidar’s tethering spell.
Kasyana snatched the cuffs, their gold-dark surfaces unnaturally warm against her freezing fingers. She scrambled back, ignoring the sharp bite of ice against her exposed skin, the sting of the torn earth. “You want a catalyst, old man?” she snarled, her voice low and dangerous, no longer a scream of fear. “I’ll give you one.”
With a grunt of effort, she flung one cuff around her own wrist, the familiar, searing cold instantly clasping shut. The other, she slammed against Ozhin’s chest, directly over his thrumming, monstrous heart. The shadow-gold latched on, sinking slightly into his hardened flesh, a sick *shunk* sound lost in the wind. A concussive shock ripped through her marrow. It wasn't just magic; it was a physical tearing, a melding of two disparate lifeforces. Ozhin roared, a sound of agony and sudden, confused rage, as if a part of him had been forcibly grafted onto another.
The stream of black-glass light faltered, convulsed, and then, with a horrifying snap, reversed course. Instead of flowing *from* Ozhin *to* Bozidar, it recoiled, a volatile tide crashing back into Ozhin, but now, crucially, also into Kasyana. Her vision swam with darkness. She felt an intrusive, overwhelming presence within her, Ozhin’s raw power, his pain, his ancient, demon-blooded essence, flooding her every nerve ending. The cuffs tightened, locking their lifelines together.
Bozidar’s triumphant smile dissolved. “What… what have you done?” he shrieked, his voice losing its calm, becoming shrill with disbelief. The intricate arcane symbol above his palm flickered, struggling to maintain its hold against the hijacked siphon.
This was her opening. “Grigza!” Kasyana choked out, the name a raw whisper as the world spun. The shadows beneath Bozidar, previously inert, coalesced. Grigza, a six-legged blur of midnight and malice, launched herself with the speed of a wind-whip. Her claws, honed to razor sharpness, raked across Bozidar’s face with sickening precision. Flesh sheared beneath her claws. Bozidar shrieked, spatters of crimson bursting forth to hiss against the freezing mud.
He reeled back, clutching at his ruined face, his incantation shattered by the sudden agony. “You… you traitorous beast!” he howled, thrashing wildly. His hands flailed, and from his belt, a silver bodkin, etched with foul runes, flew free. It was the same cursed stylus he had used on Mirela.
Kasyana, though still reeling from the violent merging with Ozhin’s power, saw it. It was her turn. She wrenched herself free from Ozhin's now-unsteady embrace, the shadow-gold cuffs burning into her skin. Driving her boots into the sludge, she lunged for the fallen spike. Her fingers closed around its cold, metallic hilt. Bozidar, blinded and disoriented, stumbled blindly, his magic fractured, his focus gone.
“You wanted to harvest power, Bozidar?” Kasyana spat, her voice laced with venom, ignoring the phantom echoes of Ozhin's pain within her own mind. “Let’s see how you enjoy reaping what you sow.”
She drove the silver spike straight through Bozidar’s sternum, piercing the root of his stolen power. The implement, forged to warp and corrupt flesh, found its true mark. Bozidar’s scream was short, sharp, and cut off abruptly. The arcane symbol above his head exploded into a shower of black sparks. His flesh, exposed to the unholy rebound of his own stolen power, began to mutate. Not into a beast, but into something far worse. It crumbled. His skin desiccated, flaking away into fine, grey ash. His eyes, already ruined, liquefied into viscous black ichor. Bone turned to dust, muscle to vapor. Within heartbeats, there was nothing left but a cloud of fine, grey particulate, carried away by the biting wind, leaving only the memory of a shriek.
Kasyana stood shivering, empty fingers opening as the tainted metal dissolved into ash, the cuffs still locking her to Ozhin while he hauled himself upright. The black-glass light receded, fully absorbed. The air no longer hummed with foreign sorcery, but with Ozhin’s raw, unstable pulse, now irrevocably tied to her own. Grigza nudged her leg, a soft, purring sound of victory.
Then, a new sound. A deep, structural shriek echoed from the clouds. The Zenith Bastion, the opulent, magically reinforced flying citadel, hung above them, no longer blazing with hellfire, but dark, lifeless. The gold gleamed dully, its magical integrity failing. The entire, impossible structure began to tilt, slowly at first, then with increasing speed. It was falling. And it was falling directly toward them.
