Chapter 8 of 10

Into the Abyss

The projection blazed, verdigris brilliance carving the terror onto Farahile and Bairakh's faces. The color deserted Zevarah's cheeks, iron frost tightening across her collarbones. Her gaze, fixed on the shimmering, undeniable proof, found Qosym’s. He lay impaled, a spear protruding from his chest, his eyes, once pools of innocent suffering, now burning with the raw, untamed hunger of the Void. His lips curved, not in pain, but in a slow, knowing smile that ripped through her carefully constructed composure. Then, the smile vanished. The viridian glare fractured. The ground beneath them convulsed, a silent scream of tortured earth. Qosym’s body, still pierced, began to dissolve into pure shadow, not as a wound, but as a release. The Void-Eater awoke, truly, completely unchained. Suffocating darkness exploded outward from his ribs, scouring the remaining Storm-Hounds whole while their armored wyverns withered into ash. Farahile cried out, a sound that ended abruptly as the abyss consumed her and Bairakh, tearing them from Zevarah’s sight. She was alone. The blackness was absolute, a void within the Void, pressing in on her, stealing her breath, her light, her very perception of space. There was no up, no down, only the sensation of being drawn into an infinite, silent maw. Then, the descent stopped. Her feet found purchase on nothing, yet she stood. The omnipresent dark coalesced, not into a shape, but into a presence. A pressure. A heat. Before her, Qosym stood. No, not Qosym. This was the entity she had groomed, unleashed, and now faced. He was colossal, his frame seeming to stretch into the endless black above them, his skin the color of twilight, shot through with veins of pulsing, obsidian energy. The spear wound was gone. The boy was gone. This was the tyrant. His eyes, twin suns of pure nothingness, burned into her. No whimpers, no feigned limps, no soft murmurs. Only unbroken shadow and an ownership that pressed like furnace heat against her skin. He moved, not walking, but simply appearing before her, impossibly close. One massive hand, fingers tipped with razor-sharp darkness, shot out, not to harm, but to pin her. Her back hit nothing, yet she felt the unyielding force against her, trapping her. He leaned in, his voice a low thrumming that resonated in her bones, devoid of the childish whine she had grown accustomed to. "*My weapon*," he purred, the syllables scraping across her skin like drawn daggers. "My sweet, deceitful little *architect*. Tell me. Tell me why my first true sensation, the first *warmth* in my desolate existence, was the ice-cold touch of your curse. Tell me why you took me, consumed me, and then taught me to *beg*.” Zevarah’s heart, for the first time in an age, felt truly exposed. Her tactical mind scrambled, searching for an escape, a lie, a plausible manipulation. But there was none. Not here, in this pocket of pure truth. Not against *him*. Yet, she would not cower. Not even before the creature she had made. “I did it for freedom,” she stated, her voice steady despite the tremor that tried to seize her lungs. “For absolute, untouchable freedom. My clan, my past, this doomed world – they sought to shackle me. You were the means to break those chains. The ultimate power. I needed you to be bound to me, to serve *my* will. I needed to escape. And you were the only path.” His head tilted, a predator assessing its prey. The Void around them seemed to thicken, absorbing even the echoes of her confession. She braced for the annihilation, for the tearing of her soul into oblivion. She had condemned him. Now, she would pay the price. But instead of destruction, his massive arms enveloped her, pulling her against his vast, unyielding chest. The embrace was crushing, possessive, a cage built of pure power. His breath, cold and smelling of distant stars, ghosted over her hair. "Foolish jailer," he whispered, the sound vibrating down her ribs. “Did you truly think I didn’t know? The moment your scent touched my soul, even as a child chained in the deepest chasm, I recognized it. The intricate weave of *your* magic, the faint echo of *your* will in the curse. It was you. Always you.” Zevarah stilled, her mind reeling. He knew? All this time? The limps, the whimpers, the calculated fragility – all of it a performance? The trap closed hard in her gut. He had played her. And the worst part? A treacherous part of her, the genuine affection she’d tried to suppress, felt a strange, horrifying relief. He saw her, truly saw her, and he still wanted her. This wasn’t a weapon she had forged. This was a monster who had *chosen* her. “But why?” she managed, the word a rasp. “Why pretend? Why endure the curse if you knew?” He chuckled, a dark, rumbling sound that shook the void itself. “Because, Zevarah, my darling weapon, if I was merely the unchained Void-Eater, you would seek to control me. To use me. And then, when my purpose was served, you would leave. But as your whimpering, injured pup? As your devoted, broken tool? Then you would never abandon me. You would always come back. I learned that much from the whispers of the Void. To keep my precious captor, I had to be exactly what you desired." His grip tightened, almost painfully, a declaration of ownership. “And now, you are mine. Bound to me, as I am to you. Forever.” The words were barely out of his mouth when a discordant scream tore through the silent void. It wasn’t Qosym’s voice, but something deeper, more ancient, filled with raw, unadulterated rage. Qosym’s colossal form bucked, his arms tightening around Zevarah reflexively even as fissures of jade fire, identical to the curse’s seal, erupted across his dark flesh. The Void-Eater entity was rebelling, struggling against its host. “*You keep her?*” the ancient voice shrieked, echoing from within Qosym’s chest, a hungry, ravenous sound. “*After all I gave you? After I let you play your pathetic little human games? You deny me my meal?*” Qosym roared, a sound of pure agony and defiance, fighting against the internal usurpation. The green fractures widened, oozing pure darkness, consuming his form. He began to dissolve again, but this time, it was not a controlled transformation. It was an unraveling. His possessive hold on Zevarah weakened, his body arching, consumed by an infernal struggle. The ancient voice, now a triumphant cacophony, boomed through the void. “*She is mine, now! The binder of the Void! My true feast! Unless… unless she truly wishes to save her pet. Then let her bind herself to ME. Let her offer her soul, not to the boy, but to the Abyss itself. A willing sacrifice. A true binding. Her soul for his. Do it, little monster. Bind your eternal essence to the Void, or watch your foolish obsession be devoured from the inside out!*”
