Chapter 8 of 10
Scriber's Masterpiece
962 words
A guttural shriek, dry as ancient bone, tore through the plummeting air. Tazrin twisted, her vision a blur of darkness and gnashing teeth. Chasen, despite the violent fall, somehow managed to maneuver, yanking her against him, shielding her head with his arm as they slammed into grimy stone. The stone cracked against her ribs, but Chasen’s arm held firm around her skull.
Light flared. Not a benevolent glow, but a harsh, sickly green originating from the colossal creature that now towered over them. Its body was a grotesque fusion of hammered brass and rusted iron, a skeletal lion's frame with leathery, tattered wings and a scorpion’s tail tipped with a barbed stinger that dripped viscous, shimmering oil. Its head, a mockery of a predator, was a cluster of interlocking plates, multifaceted eyes pulsing dull bile. It was starved, its joints groaning with rust.
Above them, a circular aperture in the vault’s overhead masonry glowed with the same sickly green. Kryton Bhelz stood there, a sneer twisting his features, a tumbler of violet spirits clutched in one hand. “Quite the spectacle, isn’t it, Volen? My personal plaything. Designed to root out trespassers. And you, my dear, radiate quite the scent of defiance.” His voice echoed, dripping with synthetic amusement.
The bladed beast lunged. Its massive claws gouged furrows into the stone where Tazrin had just lain. Chasen shoved her behind a toppled pillar, his chest heaving. “It’s faster than it looks,” he rasped, his eyes fixed on the beast. “And it’s tracking something.”
Tazrin’s mind raced, connecting Kryton’s words to the beast’s movements. “It’s tracking *aura*,” she deduced, her voice a strained gasp. “Your fading reserves, that’s what it wants. It’s like a hound for raw lineage!”
Kryton’s laughter cascaded down from the balcony. “Clever girl. Pity you won’t live long enough to put that intellect to good use. The machine is keyed to a Bhelz signature. And it hungers.” He raised his glass in a mock toast.
Chasen’s gaze flickered upwards, past Kryton, to the enormous iron luminary fixture hanging precariously from the high stone arches of the gladiator pit. It was a relic, heavy and ornate, suspended by ancient, groaning chains. A wicked glint entered his eyes. “Then let’s give it something to really chase.”
He pushed Tazrin further behind the pillar. His face, already pale from the Chrono-blight, tightened. Then, with a defiant roar that seemed to tear at his own essence, he flared his aura. It wasn’t the suffocating, destructive force he’d unleashed against Kryton at the arena; it was a focused, searing burst, raw and agonized, like a dying star’s final flare. The monstrosity shrieked with mechanical hunger and lunged directly for him, iron claws scoring the flagstones.
“Now, Tazrin!” Chasen yelled, bracing himself.
Tazrin didn't hesitate. Her eyes scanned the overhead rigging, searching for its release mechanism. A heavy lever, rusted but still functional, jutted out from a crumbling wall niche near their cover. She kicked off the flagstones, darting wide around the creature's snapping jaw. Her hand closed around the cold metal of the lever. It groaned under her weight, resisting for a moment, then gave way with a screech of tortured metal.
The massive ring of iron plummeted. Links shrieked as they sheared away overhead, spraying orange sparks across the pit. Caught mid-lunge, the beast never pivoted. The heavy iron cage crashed down, pinning its brass-plated body to the flagstones with a deafening *CRANG!* Its wings thrashed, its stinger whipped wildly, but the sheer weight held it fast.
Kryton’s mocking laughter died in his throat. His face contorted, a mask of pure fury. “Impossible! My creation… it’s indestructible!”
The machine let out a series of clicks, multifaceted eyes flaring. A faint blue discharge began to thrum across its metallic plates. The cage of spikes began to lift, an inch at a time. It was trying to free itself.
Just then, a small, dark blur dropped from the fractured masonry above, landing with a soft thud beside the pinned beast. It was Scriber, Tazrin’s quill-fox, his inky fur bristling with self-importance. In his mouth, he held a bizarre contraption: the Bhelz cufflink, polished to a mirror sheen, wired haphazardly to the void-grenade’s detonator, surrounded by a mess of scavenged wires and shimmering detritus. A single, unstable purple filament sparked between two loose connections.
Scriber chirped, a triumphant, rattling sound, and dropped his contraption directly onto the metal skull. Before Tazrin could even process what she was seeing, the junk-bomb detonated.
Not with an explosion of force, but with a blinding flash of purple-white light and a sharp, crackling *ZAP!* A localized electromagnetic pulse rippled outwards, washing over the iron plates. The beast went utterly still. The blue static flickered and died, leaving scrap under the iron cage. Its glowing eyes dimmed to an empty, dead black.
But the EMP didn't stop there. As the pulse propagated, the air rippled. The rough-hewn stone walls of the gladiator pit shimmered, then dissolved, revealing intricately carved runes and hidden alcoves. The illusions that had camouflaged this horrific place for generations now flickered out of existence, leaving behind an unsettling, stark reality. The hidden spaces of the Bhelz ancestral vault, previously invisible, now stood exposed.
One such space, directly across the pit, drew Tazrin’s horrified gaze. It was a narrow, high-walled chamber, connected by a precarious catwalk. And within it, suspended by heavy iron chains, was not a book, not a ledger of secrets, but a person. A young woman, frail and gaunt, her skin a pallid canvas for the hideous, swirling black runes that covered every inch of her exposed flesh. Her blank eyes stared into the dark, mouth parted in an enduring shriek. This was Kryton’s sister, Lira—and the Bhelz Ledger was inscribed directly across her living flesh.
