Chapter 8 of 10
An Inheritance of Thorns

Nerina dropped the crimson-bound compendium, its pages splayed on the cold flagstones. Luca, his face ashen, fumbled for Kaelan’s wrist, pressing two digits against the child’s clammy skin. “His pulse… it’s barely there, Signorina.”
Nerina swallowed back panic; Kaelan’s life flickered like a spent lampwick. Her gaze snapped from the limp child to the scorched remains of the calendula extract. Amarantha’s cruel laughter echoed in her mind, a discordant chime. *Impossible, dear. I destroyed the supply.* No. Nothing was impossible. Lysandra Valenti had left her this volume, this legacy, for a reason.
Her eyes darted back to the open compendium. She hadn’t just inherited formulas; she’d inherited a mind. Lysandra had woven her scientific meticulousness into every detail, every annotation. Nerina remembered Lysandra bent over a hybrid bush in the private gardens, cultivated with obsessive care. The ‘Miraflores Dawn’ rose, its petals a vibrant blush at the core, fading to cream at the edges, a scent both delicate and fiercely resilient. A seemingly ornamental bloom, yet the late perfumer had often hinted at its unique properties, a secret held close.
She snatched up the compendium again, her gaze raking over the intricate script. There. An unusual symbol, a small, stylized rosebud beside a sequence of alchemical diagrams on the very last page of the antidote notes. It was not part of the original calendula formula. It was a failsafe. A substitute.
“The Miraflores Dawn,” Nerina breathed, the name a prayer. “Luca, my mother’s roses! The bushes past the citrus grove. They’re not just for show.”
Luca blinked, momentarily bewildered by the abrupt shift. “The… the ornamental ones? But, Signorina, they’re not typically used in medicinal preparations. Their sap is… unusually potent.”
“Potent is what we need!” Nerina cried, pushing the relevant page towards him. “Look at this notation. My mother wouldn’t have included it unless it was critical. The petals, Luca. We need to extract the essence. Now!”
Luca, spurred by her conviction and Kaelan’s shallow breathing, nodded once, sharply. He grabbed a small porcelain mortar and pestle. “I’ll be as quick as I can, Signorina. But this will take time. And precise heat. We cannot rush it.”
Nerina looked at Kaelan, his face paling further, his lips a faint blue. Time. It was the one thing they didn’t have. She pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. “Stay with me, Kaelan. Just a little longer.”
She rose, wiping her palms against her skirts. The roses might buy Kaelan time, but they wouldn't dismantle the architects of his suffering. That, she would do herself. Zaccaria. Amarantha. The Guild Investigators and Basilio were making a fuss at the main gates. Zaccaria would be cornered, trapped.
She strode out of the lab, her silk gown a whisper against the flagstones, her footsteps silent. She navigated the familiar labyrinth of the villa, the grand halls now eerily quiet save for the distant clamor from the estate’s entrance. She moved towards Zaccaria’s study, the opulent chamber that had once belonged to Cassio Valenti, now a fortress of deceit.
As she neared the heavy, carved oak doors, voices, sharp and uncompromising, reached her. Basilio Verran’s low, controlled tones, laced with barely restrained fury, met Zaccaria’s oily reassurances. She pushed the door open without ceremony, stepping into the room like an avenging spirit.
Basilio stood before Zaccaria’s expansive desk, his posture rigid, his dark uniform immaculate. His steel-grey gaze held an unyielding intensity Nerina had rarely glimpsed. Zaccaria, seated behind the desk, had lost his usual composure. His linen tunic was askew, his face a mottled red, beads of sweat tracking paths through his sparse hair. The air reeked of stale pipe tobacco and sour sweat.
“Nerina,” Basilio acknowledged, his voice a low rumble, his eyes briefly softening as they met hers before hardening again on Zaccaria. “You chose a timely moment.”
Zaccaria flinched, his gaze darting between Nerina and Basilio. “My dear girl! What is this intrusion? Can’t you see I am engaged in… delicate matters of trade with this… Guild official?” He tried to project his usual bluster, but it was a thin veil, easily rent.
“Delicate matters?” Nerina’s voice was a silken whip, each word precisely placed. “Or the unraveling of your criminal enterprise, stepfather? Where is the antidote? Amarantha said you destroyed the golden bloom extract. Do you intend to let Kaelan perish?”
Zaccaria’s eyes narrowed, the last vestiges of his feigned cordiality melting away. “Amarantha speaks in haste. The boy’s condition is… regrettable. But I assure you, my dear, it is not beyond my… influence. You speak of antidotes, but you miss the larger game.” He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, a chilling calm replacing his panic. “You believe you know everything, little Valenti. You believe the old master was a victim, a good man brought low by an accident, by my influence.”
Nerina set her teeth. “He was. A good man who built this house, this name, this legacy.”
Zaccaria let out a soft, guttural chuckle that grated on Nerina’s ears. “A good man? Cassio was a visionary. And a pragmatist. He saw the commercial value of the golden blooms years ago, long before I ever stepped foot into this estate. He began the research, the initial extractions, the very foundation of what you now deem my ‘criminal enterprise’.” He paused, letting his words hang in the air, thick with poison. “He wasn’t a victim, Nerina. He was my partner. My *mentor* in this. And I have the proof, carefully preserved, in his own hand. Documents that would not only expose my activities but utterly obliterate the Valenti name, staining every drop of your family’s esteemed lineage with the same filth you accuse me of.”
Basilio’s expression remained impassive, but his stance shifted subtly, his eyes flicking to Nerina, gauging her reaction. The silence in the study stretched razor-thin.
Zaccaria watched Nerina, a predatory gleam returning to his eyes. “So, little Valenti, here is your choice. Expose me, and watch the entire Valenti legacy crumble to dust, your sire’s name forever synonymous with illicit trade and the poisoning of the Republic. Or… you take control. Take the business. Take the guild seat. Let me disappear, and I will ensure the proof of Cassio Valenti’s complicity remains unrevealed. The Valenti name, cleansed of my presence, will remain pristine. You will finally have everything you desire, Nerina. Everything, at the cost of your vengeance.”
