Chapter 6 of 10
Surgical Extraction

Syrine pressed her comm-link against her ear, lips pressed thin. “Chogur? What in the—”
“The old bastard,” Isken spat, the words flat and devoid of humor.
“He called in a favor,” Syrine murmured, watching the reinforced blast door, then the ductwork above. “That’s why the defenses here were so… lax. He had an access key.” Her voice was tight, the carefully constructed calm of a fixer beginning to fray. “He’s not just downloading, Isken. He’s running a brute-force sweep. If he’s talking about ‘profits,’ he’s sending in his own crew.”
Just as she finished speaking, a rhythmic thudding echoed from the upper levels of the black-site. Not the frantic, panicked thrum of Valtara’s internal security bots, but the measured, heavy tread of armored boots. The lab’s speaker mesh, still crackling with the phantom echo of Chogur’s glee, suddenly blared an alarm. A synthesized voice, calm amidst the chaos, announced: “Unauthorized personnel detected in Server Sector Gamma. Engaging lockdown sequence. Neutralize intruders.”
“Neutralize intruders, huh?” Isken muttered, a cynical sneer twisting his lips. “Sounds like Chogur’s trying to tie up loose ends.” He glanced at the vents. “How many men are we talking about?”
“Too many for a straight fight, especially in this maze,” Syrine replied, already moving toward a secondary workstation. Her fingers struck the keys, attempting to breach the perimeter lockdown. “My intel suggests Chogur’s personal enforcers run in squads of six, heavily armed with stun-rifles and sonic disruptors. Lethal, but designed for capture rather than outright kill – for retrieval targets destined for questioning.”
“Lucky us,” Isken deadpanned. He felt the familiar hum of the [Chemical Synthesis Gland] within his throat, a subtle thrum that promised a new kind of weapon. He’d barely had time to register its presence, let alone experiment. But the choice wasn’t his.

“Alright, fine,” Isken said, ignoring the System’s clinical demand. “We need to slow them down. Give me access to the duct lines in Server Sector Gamma. I’ll make them take a nap.”
Syrine paused, glancing sideways. “A nap? With what?”
“My new party trick,” Isken replied, a cold glint in his eye. “Just open the line.”
Her skepticism was clear, but the urgency of the situation override it. “The schematics for the HVAC are integrated into the main grid. I can patch you in, but it’ll take a moment to bypass Chogur’s firewall.” She gestured to a maintenance panel near the ceiling. “There’s an access port there. You’ll have to physically connect.”
Isken moved, his enhanced reflexes making the climb seem effortless. He tore open the grimy panel, revealing a tangle of fiber optics and conduits. Syrine, meanwhile, worked feverishly at the desk, checking the network trees. The thudding grew louder, closer, punctuated by the rough shouts of Chogur’s squad.
“They’re almost here,” Syrine warned, her voice strained. “Chogur’s downloaded close to fifty percent of the primary data stream. He’ll make his move soon.”
“Fifty percent, that’s a problem for later,” Isken grunted, locating the main ventilation conduit. He took a deep breath, focusing on the subtle internal adjustments of the gland. He pictured the chemical structure of a fast-acting paralytic, non-lethal, designed to induce temporary motor incapacitation without causing lasting harm. His body responded, a strange warmth blooming in his throat.
He exhaled slowly, a thin, almost invisible mist wafting from his mouth and into the open vent. It had a faint, metallic scent, like ozone mixed with something vaguely medicinal. He continued to breathe, a steady, controlled stream, directing the vapor into the unseen pathways of the black-site’s air circulation.

Seconds later, a choked gasp echoed from the corridor outside, followed by the clatter of dropped weapons. Then another, and another. The heavy footsteps faltered, then ceased. A profound silence descended, broken only by the hum of the lab’s systems and the rapid click of Syrine’s keyboard.
“Did it work?” Syrine whispered, watching the doorway. She still couldn’t see the gas, but the sudden cessation of hostiles spoke volumes.
“Looks like it,” Isken said, dropping back to the floor. “For now.”
Just as he landed, the console chimed with a crimson error line. “Dammit!” Syrine slammed her fist on the console. “Chogur’s gone. He completed a partial download and triggered his emergency egress. His teams are still here, but he’s out.”
Isken spat on the plating. Half the data. That meant half the plague’s secrets, half the cure’s potential, was now in the hands of a profiteer. And the remaining mercenaries, paralyzed or not, were still a loose end.
Suddenly, the reinforced wall behind them shuddered. A low, guttural growl vibrated through the floor. A crack appeared, spider-webbing outwards from a central point. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone and something else, something metallic and sickly sweet. The strips overhead wavered, dimming to a dull yellow, then pulsing into a bile green.
“What now?” Syrine asked, hefting an iron wrench and angling toward the split partition.
[THREAT ASSESSMENT: PATHOGEN VECTOR. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY BREACH IMMINENT.]
“Now,” Isken said, his voice flat, “the real sickness shows up.”
With a deafening shriek of tearing metal and collapsing concrete, a section of the wall exploded inwards. Standing in the gaping maw, framed by swirling debris and dim warning beacons, stood the rival carrier. Its augmented form seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy, its optical sensors glowing like embers in the gloom. It lifted a heavy, calcified arm, a clawed hand dripping with what looked like liquefied slag, and pointed it at them.
[EXCISION SUCCESSFUL: IMMEDIATE TUMORS CLEARED. REWARD: NEURAL UPLINK.]
Isken ignored the chime. The air around them began to ripple, distorting the lab’s familiar contours. The phosphor strips hardened into static bars, marking a quarantine perimeter around the debris. The floor beneath them seemed to warp, the tiles bulging and contracting like diseased flesh. The rival lattice had locked the room.
[OPERATING THEATER: MALIGNANT TRANSFORMATION INITIATED. TARGETS: ISKEN RAHAL, SYRINE MALAT. EXCISION RUN: ENGAGED.]
The sterile, inescapable surgical ward had returned, but this time, it was a warped, diseased reflection of itself, a horrifying playground forged by the rival entity.
