Chapter 7: Where Shadows Seek Sanctuary

Rain fell in greasy sheets, slicking the neon-lit alleyways of the upper districts.\n\nRed searchlights swept across the metal sky, casting long, bloody bars over the concrete walls.\n\nHeavy boots clattered on the steel grates above, accompanied by the low hum of tracking drones.\n\nDucking into a narrow gap between two crumbling warehouses, Ruan pressed his back against the damp brickwork.\n\nHunters patrolled the main thoroughfares, their glowing blue armor marking them as hounds of the celestial system.\n\nEscaping their net required going downward, into the bowels of the city where the system's light could not reach.\n\nSlipping through a loose iron grate, he dropped into the darkness of the vertical ventilation shafts.\n\nFilthy water splashed against his leather boots as he landed on a rusted catwalk fifteen feet below.\n\nNeon signs from the upper levels flickered through the overhead grates, casting grid-like shadows across his face.\n\nScreams, laughter, and the thrum of cheap synthetic music drifted up from the depths.\n\nDownward he went, navigating a maze of dripping pipes and crumbling stone stairwells.\n\nAir down here grew thick, tasting of sulfur, rot, and the metallic tang of industrial waste.\n\nSlums of the Undercity stretched out before him like a festering wound in the earth.\n\nMiserable figures huddled in the alcoves of the damp tunnels, their eyes hollow and devoid of hope.\n\nThese were the unblessed, the dregs who had rejected the Constellations' contracts or been discarded by fickle divine patrons.\n\nDeformed limbs and rotting flesh marked many of them, the physical price of celestial rejection.\n\nGlowing system brands on their necks pulsed with a sickly yellow light, slowly draining what little life they had left.\n\nCoughing echoed through the dark corridors, wet and rattling, a chorus of the forgotten.\n\nRuan pulled his hood lower, his hand resting naturally on the hilt of his ancient blade.\n\nEvery step he took felt heavy with the weight of a world that had forgotten its own strength.\n\nMortal hands had once split mountains through sheer discipline and iron will.\n\nNow, these people begged for scraps of starlight like dogs beneath a banquet table, utterly dependent on alien masters.\n\nWalking past a group of shivering children, Ruan felt a familiar, cold ache in his chest.\n\nGuilt, sharp and familiar, pricked at his mind.\n\nHe had slept for ten centuries while these people were broken, tamed, and stripped of their dignity.\n\nLooking at their hollow eyes, he saw the ultimate failure of his generation.\n\nThey had failed to protect the future, leaving their descendants to inherit a gilded cage.\n\nA neon sign buzzed overhead, spelling out *Jin's Salvage* in flickering green letters.\n\nPeeling leather curtains hung over the entrance of the shop, muffled voices drifting from within.\n\nPushing the curtain aside, Ruan stepped into a room packed to the ceiling with metallic junk.\n\nShelves overflowed with cracked mana crystals, rusted hunter armor, and broken mechanical limbs.\n\nBehind a counter made of reinforced steel sat an old man with a cybernetic eye that whirred as it focused.\n\nWisps of grey hair clung to his scarred scalp, and his fingers moved with a twitchy, nervous energy.\n\n"We're closed," the old man muttered, not looking up from a circuit board he was soldering.\n\n"Mina said you have information," Ruan said, his voice a low baritone that cut through the hum of the shop.\n\nJin froze, his soldering iron hovering a millimeter above the green board.\n\nSlowly, the old man raised his head, his single organic eye narrowing as he assessed the stranger.\n\n"Mina is a fool who talks too much," Jin spat, setting the tool down.\n\n"And you don't look like a local," the old man added, his cybernetic eye clicking as it scanned Ruan's frame.\n\nRuan stepped closer, the floorboards silent beneath his feet despite his heavy boots.\n\n"I need to know how they track people without the system," Ruan demanded.\n\nJin let out a dry, hacking laugh that ended in a wet cough.\n\n"They don't need to track you if you stick out like a lighthouse in a storm," Jin said, pointing a grease-stained finger.\n\n"You have no mana signature, yet your physical presence is like a black hole."\n\n"A blind man could feel the pressure radiating off you."\n\nRuan remained perfectly still, his expression carved from stone.\n\n"Tell me about the hunts," Ruan said.\n\nJin sighed, reaching beneath the counter to pull out a bottle of murky, amber liquid.\n\nWiping his mouth with the back of his hand, the old man set the bottle down.\n\n"Guilds are hunting you because you're an anomaly," Jin explained.\n\n"An uncontracted human who can kill a high-ranking hunter is a threat to the entire order."\n\n"If the sheep realize they don't need the shepherds to survive, the gods lose their food."\n\nRuan's hand tightened slightly on his scabbard.\n\n"Is that why they wiped out the martial artists?" Ruan asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet.\n\nJin's organic eye widened slightly, a flicker of genuine fear crossing his weathered face.\n\n"You know about the Purge?" the old man whispered, leaning over the counter.\n\n"That was a thousand years ago, friend."\n\n"History books don't even mention them anymore."\n\n"To the world today, those ancient warriors are nothing but myths and fairy tales."\n\nRuan didn't answer, his silence demanding more.\n\nShaking his head, Jin took another drink, his hand trembling slightly.\n\n"They call it the Great Cleansing," Jin muttered.\n\n"Constellations realized that human willpower, when refined to its absolute peak, could bypass divine authority."\n\n"So they hunted every single master down."\n\n"Temples were burned, blades shattered, and the earth salted."\n\n"But they didn't stop there."\n\nRuan felt a sudden, icy chill creep down his spine.\n\n"What do you mean?" Ruan asked.\n\nJin's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, his mechanical eye whirring erratically.\n\n"They realized the bones of those masters were different," Jin said.\n\n"Decades of circulating internal energy had physically altered their skeletal structure."\n\n"Their remains became condensed vessels of pure, unadulterated vital force."\n\n"Do you know what the high-ranking hunters do with that?"\n\nRuan's breathing stopped.\n\nHis jaw clenched so hard the bone groaned under the pressure.\n\n"Speak," Ruan commanded, a sudden pressure filling the small shop.\n\nMetal cans on the shelves began to rattle as the ambient air pressure plummeted.\n\nJin swallowed hard, sweating profusely under the sudden, suffocating weight in the room.\n\n"They grind them up," Jin whispered, his voice shaking.\n\n"It is a luxury stimulant sold on the black market to elite hunters."\n\n"Inhaling it temporarily floods their mana circuits, forcing their power to limits they could never reach on their own."\n\n"Ashes of your ancestors are being snorted by the very people who enslaved this world."\n\nSilence fell over the room, absolute and suffocating.\n\nFrost began to bloom across the rusted steel counter, spider-webbing outward from where Ruan's hands hovered.\n\nEvery lightbulb in the shop flickered, the filaments buzzing violently before shattering one by one.\n\nDarkness swallowed the room, saved only by the faint, eerie green glow of the outdoor neon sign.\n\nJin gasped for air, clutching his chest as the temperature plummeted to freezing.\n\nBreath billowed from his mouth in thick, white plumes.\n\nHe felt as if a physical blade was pressing against his throat, holding him on the precipice of death.\n\nRuan did not move, but his eyes glowed with an ancient, terrifying intensity.\n\nAll of his being screamed for blood.\n\nDisciples he had trained, the peers he had sparred with, the masters who had guided him.\n\nAll of them had been reduced to white powder, snorted by decadent puppets of the gods.\n\n"Who sells it?" Ruan asked.\n\nHis voice was no longer human; it sounded like grinding tectonic plates, resonant and empty of mercy.\n\nJin trembled, his cybernetic eye spinning wildly as it tried to calibrate in the sudden, freezing dark.\n\n"A-anyone with access to the old ruins," Jin stammered, his teeth chattering.\n\n"Hunter Alliance controls the main excavation sites."\n\n"They treat our sacred burial grounds like strip mines."\n\n"But there's one dealer in this district who has the direct supply."\n\nRuan took a slow, deep breath, forcing the killing intent back into his core.\n\nFrost on the counter stopped expanding, but it did not melt.\n\n"Give me a name," Ruan said.\n\nJin reached into his coat with shaking fingers, pulling out a heavy, metallic key.\n\n"I don't have a name, but I have this," Jin said, his voice barely a whisper.\n\nHe unlocked a heavy steel drawer beneath the counter.\n\nReaching inside, he pulled out an item wrapped in heavy, lead-lined cloth.\n\n"High-ranking hunters trade these when they're desperate," Jin explained.\n\n"He said it came from the tomb of the Azure Cloud Sect."\n\n"Seals on the box are designed to keep the residual energy from leaking out."\n\nJin drops a lead-lined lockbox onto the table, revealing a single, pristine sword tassel belonging to Ruan's deceased junior brother, still stained with blood.
