Chapter 1: A Tomb of Silent Ash

1.5k words

Cracks spiderwebbed across the crystalline surface, reflecting a dull, dead light. Cold, stale air rushed into the shattered cocoon, burning Ruan’s lungs like liquid nitrogen. With a final, desperate heave of his shoulders, he burst through the hardened shell of stasis. Glassy shards rained onto the stone floor, echoing in the absolute silence of the mountain cavern. Kneeling in the dust, Ruan clutched his throat, gasping for air that felt ancient, dry, and thin. How long had he slept? One century had been the plan. Sealed away in the deepest chambers of Mount Hua, he was supposed to wait out the great plague, letting his internal energy preserve his body until it was safe to return. "Master?" he called out, his voice a hoarse, grating whisper that barely carried beyond his own knees. Silence swallowed his words instantly. No footsteps hurried to greet him. No flickering torches lined the grand hall of the inner sanctum. Dragging his heavy limbs forward, Ruan pushed himself to his feet. Muscles screamed in protest, stiffened by long immobilization, but the profound strength coiled within his meridians quickly flared to life, warming his frozen blood. Something felt deeply, fundamentally wrong. Mount Hua had always hummed with the vibrant energy of thousands of disciples practicing their sword forms. Now, a heavy, suffocating stillness hung in the air, smelling of dry rot and ancient dust. Stumbling through the darkness, he guided his hand along the stone wall, tracing the familiar carvings of the sect's legendary sword techniques. Every groove was choked with gray ash. Suddenly, a strange, unnatural glow flickered from the center of the grand chamber. Blue, sterile light pulsed with a slow, mechanical rhythm, entirely unlike the warm firelight of his memory. Ruan rounded the corner, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "First Brother? Second Brother?" he called out, his eyes straining against the dimness. Shapes emerged from the gloom. Dozens of figures sat in a perfect, neat circle. Relief surged through his chest, only to curdle into horror as he stepped closer. These were not living men. Preserved in a mockery of life, the hollowed-out husks of his martial brothers sat cross-legged on the stone floor. Skin clung to their bones like dry parchment, stretched tight over sunken cheeks and empty eye sockets. Their hands were clasped together, not in the traditional meditative mudra of the Mount Hua Sect, but in a groveling pose of absolute submission. In the center of their circle lay a massive, glowing celestial rune carved directly into the sacred stone floor. Glimmering with that same unnatural blue light, the rune pulsed, casting long, distorted shadows of the dead across the cavern walls. Ruan dropped to his knees before the corpse of his closest friend, Senior Brother Chen. A sickening emptiness gaped where Chen's chest should have been, his heart and core clean scooped out, leaving only a hollow cavity. Tears pricked Ruan's eyes, but they dried instantly under the heat of a rising, suffocating rage. Why were they like this? Who had desecrated their bodies and forced them into this humiliating stance of worship? "What happened here?" he whispered, his hands shaking as he touched Chen's cold, withered shoulder. Dust fell from the fabric of Chen’s robes, revealing a branding mark on the back of his neck—a burning golden brand shaped like a locked collar. Before he could process the sight, the celestial rune in the center of the room flared with blinding intensity. Humming with a high-pitched, agonizing frequency, the air grew heavy, pressing down on Ruan with immense pressure. "A remnant soul still lingers in this dead nest?" a voice echoed, dripping with casual arrogance. Ruan slowly turned his head. Descending from the cavern ceiling, a figure draped in shimmering golden robes floated down, feet never touching the dusty floor. Two pairs of feathered wings, metallic and gleaming, folded behind his back. A clean, porcelain-like face stared down at Ruan with absolute disdain, his eyes glowing with a cold, numerical light. Above his head, a floating, mechanical eye hovered, spinning silently as it projected a soft blue screen. "System designation: Low-tier Envoy Kaelas," the entity announced, his voice vibrating with artificial authority. "Identify yourself, mortal relic." Ruan did not answer. He only stared at the golden branding mark on the entity's chest, matching the one on his brother's neck. "Speak, or be purged as unregistered data," Kaelas commanded, raising a hand clad in golden armor. "You have slept past your era, little bug." "The martial arts of this world have been classified as an illegal pathogen." "Your brothers chose to surrender their cores to the Great Constellations, earning a peaceful, preserved end." "You, however, are an anomaly." Ruan’s gaze drifted from the floating envoy to the hollow chest of Senior Brother Chen. They hadn't passed away from a plague. They had been hunted, hollowed out, and used as batteries to feed some celestial system. A suffocating wave of survivor's guilt crashed over him, threatening to drown his senses. He had slept in safety while his family was butchered like cattle. He had been preserved while they were drained of their very souls. Why him? Why did he get to survive while the entire legacy of Mount Hua was erased from the face of the earth? "I am speaking to you, trash," Kaelas sneered, stepping closer, his golden hand glowing with a destructive white flame. "Submit your soul container for harvesting." "Your pathetic mortal strength means nothing in the age of the System." Ruan slowly reached out, his fingers brushing against a discarded, rusty training saber lying in the dust beside Chen's knees. It was a weapon meant for children, dull and pitted with orange rust. Yet, as his fingers wrapped around the hilt, the world seemed to tilt. A deep, resonant hum vibrated through the steel, answering the violent surge of internal energy rushing through his meridians. "A piece of junk?" Kaelas laughed, a high, irritating sound. "You think a toy can pierce divine authority?" "Mortals never learn." Kaelas lunged forward, his flaming hand reaching directly for Ruan’s forehead to rip his soul from his flesh. Ruan didn't blink. Movement, swifter than thought, cut through the oppressive air. A single, clean arc of rusted iron cleaved the dark. No flashy lights. No booming explosions. Just pure, perfected martial intent, honed over a lifetime of absolute dedication. A clean, wet slice echoed through the cavern. Kaelas froze. His golden arm, severed perfectly at the shoulder, spun through the air before heavy-thudding onto the stone floor. Golden blood, thick and glittering like liquid starlight, sprayed across the ancient dust. Screaming in sudden, frantic agony, the envoy stumbled back, clutching his stump. "My arm!" Kaelas shrieked, his pristine face contorting into a mask of pure terror. "How? Your power levels are unregistered!" "You have no Constellation blessing!" "You are nothing but a mortal!" Ruan stood up, the rusty saber dripping with golden blood. His eyes were cold, dead, and empty of all mercy. "A mortal," Ruan repeated, his voice dangerously soft. "And you are a parasite." Stepping over the glowing rune, Ruan watched the self-proclaimed deity tremble against the wall. This creature, this 'envoy,' was weak. If this was the power that had wiped out his sect, then his brothers had been betrayed, caught off guard by trickery, not defeated by superior martial prowess. A terrible, crushing weight settled onto his shoulders. The martial era was truly dead. There were no sects left to return to, no rivals to challenge, no master to guide him. He was entirely, utterly alone in a world ruled by thieves. "Wait! Do not touch me!" Kaelas whimpered, his metallic wings twitching in panic as Ruan raised the rusty blade once more. "The Constellations see everything!" "If you kill me, you seal your own doom!" Ruan didn't hesitate. With a swift, downward strike, he cleaved the envoy's torso in two. Golden light exploded from the wound, but it was quickly snuffed out by the cold steel of the saber. Kaelas began to disintegrate, his physical form dissolving into glittering golden ash that scattered across the damp floor of the cave. Silence returned to the cavern, heavier and more suffocating than before. Ruan stood amidst the ashes of his enemy and the hollowed-out remains of his family, his knuckles white around the hilt of the rusty sword. Suddenly, the mechanical eye that had hovered above Kaelas hissed, its blue light turning a violent, bloody red. Sparks flew from its metallic joints as it floated higher, projecting a massive, flickering hologram that penetrated the ceiling of the cavern. Through the gap in the stone, the night sky outside became visible, but the stars were wrong. They were moving, shifting with unnatural speed, aligning into a jagged, burning script that lit up the entire horizon. As Kaelas disintegrates into golden ash, his floating System eye projects a massive hologram of the night sky, where the stars shift to form a burning message: 'The last sinner of Hua is awake.'
