Chapter 1: Nineteen Pairs of Eyes

Pounding footsteps echoed behind Kuba. Adrenaline surged through his veins, a familiar, unwelcome jolt. Jacek’s taunts followed him, sharp barbs slicing through the already stifling air of the school hallway. Kuba clutched his worn backpack straps, his shoulders hunched, trying to make himself smaller, invisible. It never worked. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. “Hey, Kuba! Where’s the fire, nerd?” Jacek’s voice, thick with menace, drew closer. Two of his goons chuckled, their heavy shoes scuffing the linoleum. Kuba risked a glance over his shoulder. They gained on him, their shadows stretching long and distorted in the fluorescent light. Panic seized him, tightening his throat. Any escape. He needed any escape. His eyes darted wildly, searching for an open classroom, a janitor’s closet, anything to vanish into. A door, usually kept shut, was propped ajar just ahead. A sliver of hope, a desperate gamble. He didn't hesitate. Pushing through the narrow gap, Kuba stumbled. The air inside hit him, thick with steam and the metallic tang of chlorine, mixed with a distinctly floral, feminine scent. Not a classroom. Not a closet. His breath hitched. A sound registered—the soft rush of water, hushed giggles, the clink of metal lockers. He froze, body rigid, a deer caught in headlights. His eyes adjusted to the dimmer, humid light. White tiles gleamed. Water dripped. And then he saw them. Nineteen of them. His classmates. The entire girls’ volleyball team, fresh from practice, mid-change. Silence descended, heavy and absolute. The soft sounds of water ceased. A towel slipped from a locker hook, landing with a muted thud. Every head snapped towards him. Every single one. Shock widened their eyes, a shared, collective horror mirroring his own. Girls stood in various states of undress. Some had just removed their drenched jerseys, their sports bras stark against pale skin. Others were pulling on fresh skirts, or had only just stepped out of the showers, clutching towels to their chests, their hair damp and clinging. Water glistened on their skin, droplets still clinging to shoulders and collarbones. Their faces, usually vibrant with post-practice energy, drained of color. His stomach lurched. Shame, hot and potent, burned through him. He hadn't meant to. He would never mean to. His mind screamed for an explanation, an apology, anything, but his tongue felt thick, glued to the roof of his mouth. He could only stand there, a crude, unwanted intruder. One girl, dark-haired and usually boisterous, let out a tiny, choked gasp. Her hands flew up, covering her chest. Her eyes, wide and accusing, pinned him. Another girl, usually quiet, pulled her skirt up to her chin, her face a fiery red. A ripple of similar reactions spread through the room. Flushed faces. Every one of them. A wave of pink and crimson bloomed across cheeks, necks, and chests. Their expressions shifted from pure shock to a volatile mix of embarrassment, anger, and a deep, mortified vulnerability. He could practically feel their gazes burning holes through him. “Kuba!” A shriek tore through the silence. It was Maya, the team captain, her voice laced with outrage. She grabbed a discarded towel, wrapping it hastily around her torso, her blonde hair still dripping wet. Her eyes narrowed, blazing with a fury that made him want to evaporate on the spot. That single scream shattered the fragile calm. Another girl gasped, a high-pitched cry. Then another, a guttural, furious sound. The locker room erupted. Hands flew to cover bodies. Towels were snatched. Voices rose in a cacophony of outrage and fear. He was trapped, surrounded by a whirlwind of feminine indignation. His vision blurred at the edges. The room spun. He felt dizzy, suffocated by the sheer force of their collective indignation. This was it. His life was over. He was the creep, the pervert. The 'invisible' Kuba had just become the most infamous student in school, for all the wrong reasons. Suddenly, something flickered. Not in the room, but in his vision. A translucent overlay, shimmering with an ethereal blue light, popped into existence right before his eyes. It was like a display from a video game, impossibly real, yet entirely out of place. He blinked, trying to clear his vision. The display persisted. It was simple, stark white text on a faint blue background, hovering in the air. His gaze locked onto it, momentarily distracting him from the furious glares and rising screams of his classmates. [Charm Points: +19] What? What did that even mean? He stared at the numbers, then back at the frantic, exposed girls. Their panic was escalating. The sound of their screams grew louder, sharper, punctuated by angry shouts and the desperate rustle of clothes. “Get out! Get out, you pervert!” “Someone call a teacher!” “My God, he saw everything!” The accusations slammed into him, each word a physical blow. His face felt hot, his ears ringing. He wanted to run, to bury himself in the deepest hole he could find. But his feet remained rooted to the spot, his body still locked in that terrifying, horrified trance. The luminous display pulsed subtly with each new shriek, each new blush that spread across a girl’s face. Charm Points. +19. It made no sense. This was a nightmare. This was the most mortifying moment of his entire, insignificant life. How could this be… charming? Their fear, their shame, their absolute fury—it was registering as some kind of strange score? He watched in morbid fascination as another girl, slender and athletic, let out a piercing scream, clutching her t-shirt to her chest. Her face was bright crimson, her eyes squeezed shut. As her shriek reached its peak, the UI flickered, a subtle, almost imperceptible shift in its glow. It was reacting. This wasn’t real. He had to be dreaming. Or maybe he’d finally snapped, the years of invisibility and bullying culminating in a full-blown hallucination. Yet the girls were undeniably real, their anger palpable, their fear a raw, exposed nerve. The steam still clung to the air, the smell of chlorine and sweat still filled his nostrils. Could he move? Could he even articulate a sound? His jaw ached from clenching it so tight. The desperate need to escape warring with the bizarre, unsettling fixation on the glowing numbers. Nineteen pairs of eyes, all burning into his soul, convinced he was a monster. One girl, who had been frozen by a locker, finally found her voice. Her scream was higher, thinner, more desperate than the others. She covered her face with both hands, her body shaking uncontrollably. Her cry was the raw sound of pure, unadulterated terror. As the last girl’s shriek echoes, the UI glows brighter, and a new message materializes: 'System Activated: Target acquired. Begin connection protocol?'
