Chapter 4 of 10
Lagging the Apocalypse with Baked Goods

The dev-room, or what was left of it, fractured like a poorly rendered texture. The Verdant Gauntlet’s lush, moss-covered walls shimmered through the cracks, a nauseating flicker between reality and code. The Eye of Zul, a titanic, jet orb pulsating with malevolent jade energy, seemed to grow in the sky, its glow turning the entire biome a sickly, apocalyptic red.
[WEAVER'S LOOM: STATIC KARMA OVERLOAD THREAT. INITIATING SERVER-WIDE PURGE PROTOCOL.]
[SERVER WIPE COMMENCING IN: 00:59:59]
Vozhan’s gaze remained fixed on the countdown, his expression unreadable. Sixty minutes. A generous window for a speedrunner. He already had a rough idea of the game’s internal clock. A purplish spark arced across his vision, a familiar tingle. His daily curse. He braced himself, but the anticipated strike never came. Instead, the void before him shrieked.
“VOZHAN! MY BROTHER IN SPIRIT! FEAR NOT! THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP WILL NOT BE DENIED!”
The wall of the dev-room, which moments ago had been an impenetrable barrier, exploded inwards with a shower of jade dust and splintered code. Tazliq, adorned in his usual garish orange tunic and wielding a comically oversized, blunt greatsword named ‘The Soul-Kindler’, stood amidst the debris, chest heaving. His golden-streaked hair, usually neatly tied, now bristled with static. He grinned, completely unaware that Vozhan had merely cast a localized integer overflow on the door’s HP, reducing it to a negative value that crashed its existence.
“I sensed your distress!” Tazliq bellowed, taking a heroic stance. “My heart, pure as a newly spawned mana crystal, guided me through the sentry’s blockade! For too long, the common folk of Zulqen have suffered under the tyrannical rule of these… these *Eye-Things*!”
Vozhan raised an eyebrow, a slight twitch. “You mean the system administrator’s anti-cheat mechanism?”
“Precisely!” Tazliq nodded vehemently, missing the sarcasm entirely. “But no more! The bonds we forged, the mana we shared under the persimmon tree, they transcend even the coldest code!” He pointed his dull greatsword dramatically at the colossal Eye of Zul, which pulsed with increasing intensity, now hovering directly over the cracked vault of the Gauntlet.

The Eye of Zul contracted, then unleashed a torrent of shimmering, green-tinged data streams. These weren’t just visual effects; they were raw code, compiled into solid projectiles that zipped with terrifying speed. Tazliq, ever the eager hero, roared and charged.
“For Zulqen! For freedom! For… for *us*!”
He swung The Soul-Kindler in wide, flamboyant arcs. The data streams were fast, precise, and utterly relentless. Tazliq parried the first few, sparks of green energy flying from his dull blade. He even managed to deflect one back, which harmlessly dissipated against the Eye’s glossy shell. But then the Eye fired a concentrated beam, a thick pillar of jade light that slammed into Tazliq’s chest.
He flew backward, slamming into the newly formed hole in the dev-room wall with a crunch that echoed across the biome. He lay in a heap, groaning, his heroic tunic singed and smoking. The Soul-Kindler lay several feet away, humming faintly.
“A minor setback!” Tazliq wheezed, pushing himself up on one elbow, his brow set hard. “Merely a scratch! My spirit remains unbroken!”
[WEAVER'S LOOM: USER 'TAZLIQ' HEALTH CRITICAL. INITIATING REVIVAL COOLDOWN: 00:01:00.]
Vozhan sighed. The man was going to get himself wiped before the timer even ran out. He glanced at his own mana pool, still displaying a comforting '999999999999+' due to the Elixir of Everflow. An idea, ridiculous and utterly unoptimized, sparked in his mind.
He began casting. Not a combat spell, not a movement skill. A basic, level-one utility cantrip.
[SUMMON BREAD]
A single, perfectly golden-brown loaf of bread materialized in his hand. He then cast it again.
[SUMMON BREAD]
And again.
[SUMMON BREAD]
And again. His hands blurred. Loaves of bread, hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands, began to pile up around him. Each cast was instant, consuming a fractional unit of his infinite mana. The air filled with the scent of fresh-baked dough, a bizarre counterpoint to the looming apocalypse.
“Vozhan, my friend, what are you doing?” Tazliq coughed, pushing himself fully upright. He blinked, bewildered, as a cascade of baguettes, sourdoughs, and rye loaves threatened to bury him.

The Eye of Zul, which had been preparing another punishing barrage, seemed to stutter. Its jade glow flickered. The data streams it was generating slowed to a crawl, becoming visible, blocky packets of green code hanging in the air like suspended hail.
“Ah, my beloved husband, always full of delightful surprises.”
A blur of crimson and black shot past Vozhan. Chunzal, her usual sleek assassin gear replaced by a torn, blood-splattered veil, lunged from the shadows. She had been tracking him, of course. Her obsession was as predictable as the daily strike. She screamed, a raw, furious sound, and plunged two basalt daggers into the nearest suspended data packet. The packet shattered, spraying crystalline code fragments.
“How DARE you interrupt our private apocalypse?!” she shrieked, her eyes blazing with an unhinged fury directed not at Vozhan, but at the Overseer orb. “He is MINE to torment! MINE to love! You want to PURGE him? You’ll have to go through me!”
She moved with terrifying, glitching speed, a consequence of the severe lag. The Eye of Zul, struggling to process her movements, fired a retaliatory beam. Chunzal twisted, but the beam caught her, searing a ragged trench across her back. She gasped, her body spasming, but she didn’t falter. With a defiant cry, she plunged both daggers deep into the Eye’s basalt shell. The blade connected with something soft, then a sickening crack echoed through the lag-ridden air.
[WEAVER'S LOOM: MODERATOR 'EYE OF ZUL' CORE INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. EXPOSING SYSTEM LOGS.]
The Eye of Zul shrieked, a sound of digital agony. Its shell fractured, revealing a luminous, pulsing network of pure code within. The core, a swirling vortex of binary, was now visible, its inner workings laid bare.
Chunzal collapsed, daggers still embedded in the Overseer’s exposed core, a guttural groan escaping her lips. Blood, dark as pitch, bloomed across her back and chest. She turned her head, eyes locking onto Vozhan’s. A faint, almost bashful smile touched her lips.
“Anything… for my… my future… groom…” Her voice was a ragged whisper, strained with pain. “Now… read it… before it… patches…”
Vozhan stepped forward, ignoring Tazliq’s horrified cries and the growing mountain of bread. He didn’t spare a glance for the bleeding assassin. His eyes, cold and calculating, scanned the exposed core of the Eye of Zul. Lines of cryptic code scrolled past, revealing terminal functions, backdoors, and, most importantly, the biome’s hidden exit parameters.
His eyes narrowed. The biome’s roof, a swirling vortex of ash-colored clouds, was the designated escape route. But it was far, miles above him. And the Eye of Zul still pulsed, though weakly.
Suddenly, the daily curse hit him. A blinding flash. But the instance lag, now at a glacial crawl, affected even the random elemental strikes. The bolt, thick and impossibly bright, locked mid-air, a jagged, crystalline pillar of pure energy hanging directly above him. Its descent, usually instantaneous, was now a painstakingly slow crawl, like sap dripping from a chilled branch.
Vozhan looked at the frozen bolt, then up at the ceiling. A plan, elegant and utterly absurd, formed in his mind. He took a single, deliberate step onto the crackling surface of the arrested, falling bolt. His weight, surprisingly, held. He took another step, then another. The bolt, still descending, became a bizarre, temporary staircase.
He began to climb. Up, up, walking on the halted descent of his own curse, leaving the bread-filled chaos below. The purge timer continued its slow tick: 00:54:12. He reached the biome’s skyward exit, a shimmering portal of pure light. But a final system prompt, etched into the very fabric of the portal, stopped him.
[WEAVER'S LOOM: EXIT PROTOCOL INITIATED. REQUIREMENT: SOUL SACRIFICE. INITIATE SOUL TRANSFER.]
He turned, looking down at the ravaged dev-room. Tazliq, still coughing amidst the bread, was trying to stand, his heroic spirit flickering but unbroken. Chunzal, impaled by the Overseer’s core, her life force ebbing, her eyes still fixed on him with fierce, unyielding love.
One of them. To open the gate. To escape the purge.
