Chapter 1 of 10
The Persistence of Spiced Tea and Hitboxes
1.3k words
The scent of simmering cinna-root and jor-blossom wafted through Vozhan’s cramped kitchen, a temporary truce in the perpetual chaos of the Spire’s Outer Sect. He adjusted the flame beneath the tarnished brass kettle, his gaze unfocused, already calculating the most optimal sequence of movements to reach the Ascendant Citadel’s upper levels before the next server reset. A perfect brew of ‘Crimson Serenity’ spiced tea was merely a prelude to a perfect run.
Then, the sky above Zulqen split. A jagged, sickly purple fissure tore through the perpetually hazy silksphere, crackling with violet discharge. Vozhan, mid-pour, didn't flinch. He’d seen worse during stress tests.
Instead of striking the towering obsidian spires of the Inner Sect, or even the grand training grounds where disciples sparred with shimmering anima, the bolt veered. It arced with malevolent precision, bypassing the flimsy shacks and grander dormitories, homing in on Vozhan’s humble, rented cubicle.
His kettle, still held aloft, vaporized. The fragrant tea dissipated into a puff of ozone. The entire kitchen wall, fashioned from sun-baked mud bricks and salvaged metal sheets, disintegrated, showering Vozhan in harmless, singed dust. He stood amidst the newly formed crater, a single, unblinking eye on the scorch mark where his tea had been.

[WEAVER’S LOOM: NEW STAT APPLIED TO PLAYER: LUCK -999.]
“Ah,” Vozhan murmured, the sound flat and devoid of surprise. He glanced at the gaping hole where his kitchen used to be, then at the floating notification. “So it’s daily now, not just weekly.” His brow, usually smooth, bore a faint, permanent crease from years of parsing patch notes and obscure data logs.
He set the ceramic mug, miraculously intact, onto a scorched floorboard. The world’s physics engine, a fickle and often buggy beast, was both his tormentor and his greatest weapon. A -999 Luck stat, meaning every random event would be catastrophically negative, was a minor inconvenience, easily circumvented with enough precise input.
His eyes scanned the newly exposed courtyard. It was the standard Outer Sect layout: a sparse patch of sickly green grass, a few wilting shrubs, and the imposing, albeit cosmetically weathered, stone wall separating the starting zone from the slightly less starting zone. A perfect candidate for a geometry exploit.
He bent down, picking up a sturdy, dull metal spoon from the debris. It was the same spoon he used to stir his tea, now repurposed. He needed an obstruction wedge, something to clip through the world’s geometry. The Spire of Orazal, for all its grand proclamations, was still a digital construct, riddled with structural oversights that speedrunners coveted.
Vozhan turned his back to the wall, holding the spoon out in front of him. He pressed his back firmly against the rough stone, then began a series of precise, rhythmic backward hops. It was a technique known as a 'back-hop clip,' common in retro titles where character models had slightly offset hitboxes. His body vibrated minutely with each hop, the spoon a rigid extension, forcing his own boundary box to momentarily overlap with the wall's.
The Loom, ever vigilant, flashed a warning.
[WEAVER’S LOOM: WARNING. PLAYER DETECTED ATTEMPTING COLLISION BREACH. ANTI-CHEAT PROTOCOL ENGAGED.]
He ignored it, maintaining the rhythm. The grinding sensation against his back suddenly lessened. A faint, almost imperceptible shimmer rippled through the stone where he pressed. He took one final, decisive hop, pushing with all his might against the spoon. And then, he was through.
He tumbled gracelessly onto the other side, landing with a soft thud in a patch of wild, unkempt flora. The Outer Sect courtyard was gone, replaced by a forgotten corner of the Spire’s first biome, the Sunken Fen. The air here was humid, thick with the scent of damp earth and something vaguely fungal. He stood up, brushing off his plain, grey tunic. The wall, from this side, looked solid, impenetrable. The spoon remained clutched in his hand.
"Phase one complete," he intoned, checking his internal timer. "Sub-optimal clip. Could shave 0.3 seconds with better angle."
He surveyed his surroundings. The Sunken Fen was supposed to be accessed via the ‘Trial of the Murky Depths,’ a gauntlet of low-level slime monsters and questionable platforming that could take a novice days. Vozhan had bypassed it in seconds.
His gaze fell upon a gnarled persimmon tree, its branches heavy with ripening, almost bioluminescent fruit. Not just any persimmon tree. This one, according to obscure developer notes he’d unearthed in a long-abandoned lore forum, had a unique property. A specific, obscure boundary mesh that could be interacted with. He walked towards it, a faint smile touching his lips. It was the smile of a predator spotting its prey, or a programmer finding a critical vulnerability.
He knelt at the base of the tree, plunging his hands into the soft, loamy soil. Digging without a shovel was inefficient, but necessary. He felt around, ignoring the squelch of mud and the tickle of unseen insects. His fingers brushed against something hard, metallic. He pulled it out: a tarnished, almost-black vial, stoppered with what looked like petrified moss.
[ITEM ACQUIRED: 'ELIXIR OF EVERFLOW']
[ELIXIR OF EVERFLOW: A potent, ancient brew. Grants infinite anima for a short duration. Developer-intended for end-game boss mechanics. USE WITH CAUTION. MAY CAUSE UNEXPECTED SERVER LOAD.]
“Infinite anima, just like the legends,” Vozhan muttered, uncorking the vial. He didn't hesitate. He brought the dark liquid to his lips and chugged it down. A warm, dizzying surge suffused his flesh, making his skin prickle. His anima reserves, usually barely enough to cast a basic 'Spark Bolt,' swelled to an impossible degree. He felt like he could power a small city.
Just as he finished the last drop, a voice boomed from the direction of the (now bypassed) 'Trial of the Murky Depths.'
“By the Great Loom! The legends speak true! The ‘Trial of the Murky Depths’ is indeed the path to true power!”
Vozhan sighed. Speak of Tazliq. Always so loud.
The stocky, broad-shouldered young man, radiating an almost offensively vibrant aura of heroism, burst through a thicket of reeds, staff held high. His face was a mask of earnest, if slightly bewildered, determination. He skidded to a halt, spotting Vozhan. “Greetings, traveler! Have you also come to claim your destiny within these sacred fens?”
Before Vozhan could respond, the residual charge from the 'Elixir of Everflow,' combined with the unstable phasing of his earlier clip, caused his entire body to vibrate violently. He pulsed with a faint, purple-green glow, his teeth chattering from the sheer kinetic feedback. It was a known displacement glitch, a side effect of forcing the engine to render an avatar in two places at once. Then, as if on cue, another lightning bolt, even more potent than the first, descended from the sky. It struck Vozhan squarely, enveloping him in a blinding flash of light and thunder.
He didn't scream. He merely twitched. The after-effects of the anima overflow, combined with the lightning, created an explosive feedback loop that made his frame seize up and release a torrent of raw, uncontrolled power.
Tazliq gasped, his jaw dropping in open wonder. He stared at Vozhan, who was now spasming on the ground amidst a shower of harmless sparks, his hair standing on end.
“Incredible!” Tazliq exclaimed, his voice filled with reverence. “He endures the Thunder-Body Tempering! To willingly subject oneself to such pain, to channel the very wrath of the skies to forge a stronger body! You, nameless adept, are truly a master of the forgotten arts!”
Vozhan, still vibrating and smoking faintly, managed to lift a single, numb finger. He pointed it at Tazliq, a silent, deadpan accusation. Tazliq merely smiled, a pure, guileless expression.
