Chapter 1: The Poison of Bloodlines

1.2k words

Twenty-seven years in the future, the sky over the Ancient Boundary bled a deep, bruised purple. Ash drifted through the air like frozen soot, settling on the shoulders of millions of silent warriors. Standing at the absolute vanguard of this terrifying armada, Mu Chen gripped the hilt of his weapon, his knuckles white against the dark metal. Beside him stood Maha You, the young master of the Maha Primordial Clan, whose golden armor gleamed under the dying sun, reflecting the cold light of a thousand unsheathed blades. Behind them, the vast host of the Black Heaven and Budur clans stretched across the horizon, an endless sea of cold eyes and drawn weapons. "We break their gates today," Mu Chen said, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet that cut through the howling wind. His wife, Luo Li, and their young daughter were trapped deep within the heavily fortified territory of the Eight Ancient Clans. Rivals of his primordial bloodline had taken them, thinking they could use his family as leverage to break his spirit. They did not understand that he would burn the entire world to ash before he let anyone harm them. Maha You glanced at him, a grim smile playing on his lips. "The defensive arrays of the Eight Ancient Clans are formidable, Mu Chen. They have spent centuries preparing for an invasion like this." "Let them prepare," Mu Chen replied, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the colossal bronze gates in the distance. "I will shatter their defenses myself if I must." Power rolled off him in suffocating waves, the mark of a cultivator who had walked through hell to grasp the mythical power of the Great Ruler realm. But his journey had not begun with armies, sovereigns, or absolute power. It had begun with pain, secrecy, and a boy fighting to survive his own blood. --- Cold stone bit through the thin soles of Mu Chen’s boots as he climbed the steps of the grand plaza. Obsidian pillars towered over the hundreds of young cultivators gathered at the Northern Spiritual Academy, their shadows stretching long across the courtyard. Sweat beaded on his forehead, cold and slick, though the morning air was freezing. Deep within his chest, a silent war raged. One half of his soul burned with the black, destructive flames of the Black Heaven Clan. Opposing it was the absolute, freezing void-ice of the Budur Clan. Both bloodlines were legendary, yet their union in a single body was a forbidden abomination. If either clan discovered his existence, they would rip him apart to preserve their pure lineages. Whispers drifted from the crowd of students watching him ascend the altar. "Look at him," a boy muttered from the front row, nudging his companion. "He is the son of a small-time territory lord, yet he acts like he owns the entire academy," another whispered. Ignoring them came naturally to Mu Chen. His jaw remained locked, a dangerous vein pulsing at his temple as he focused entirely on the massive crystalline sphere resting at the center of the altar. This was the Awakening Stone. It was designed to measure spiritual potential, but to Mu Chen, it was a ticking bomb. Step by step, he approached the pedestal, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped beast. Tang Qian’er watched him from the edge of the platform, her hands clenched tightly in her robes, her eyes filled with worry. She stepped forward, her voice soft with genuine concern. "Mu Chen, you look incredibly pale. If you are unwell, you can delay the awakening." Silently, he walked past her without a single glance. Accepting help, even a simple word of concern, was a luxury he could not afford. His mother had abandoned him when he was a child, leaving him with nothing but a cold bed and a harsh lesson: rely on no one. Weakness was a disease, and emotional attachments were the first symptom. Placing his palm flat against the smooth, freezing surface of the Awakening Stone, he braced himself. Instantly, a violent shockwave erupted from his core. Blistering heat and absolute frost slammed into the stone simultaneously, completely bypassing his attempts to regulate them. Cracks spiderwebbed across the ancient artifact, glowing with a terrifying, dual-colored light of deep black and brilliant silver. Panic flared through the crowd as the ground beneath the altar began to tremble. High up in the spectator pavilions, several cloaked figures stood up, their sharp eyes scanning the platform. Budur scouts. Recognizing the distinct, oppressive spiritual pressure of his mother's clan, Mu Chen’s blood ran cold. If they sensed even a fraction of the Budur void-ice mixing with the Black Heaven flames, they would execute him on the spot. With a brutal, silent growl, he forced his spiritual energy backward. Reversing the flow of a primordial awakening was like forcing a raging river back up a mountain. Ripping through his own meridians, the chaotic energy tore his internal pathways to shreds. Blood pooled in his throat, thick, metallic, and agonizingly hot. He forced himself to swallow it down, keeping his face entirely blank, his eyes cold and unreadable. Boom! Shattering into a million razor-sharp fragments, the Awakening Stone exploded. Shrapnel sliced through the air, cutting his cheeks and shoulders, but he did not flinch. Dust settled over the ruined altar, leaving the entire academy in a stunned, breathless silence. Everyone assumed his unstable spiritual energy had simply caused a severe malfunction. Principal Xiao stepped forward, his eyes wide with shock. "What... what happened here? Did his energy destabilize so quickly?" Mu Chen pulled his hand back, concealing his trembling fingers within his wide sleeves. "My apologies, Principal. It seems my spiritual energy is too volatile for this stone." His voice was flat, devoid of any emotion, masking the excruciating pain that threatened to make him collapse. Hurrying up the steps, Tang Qian’er bypassed the academy instructors, her face pale as she reached for his arm. "Mu Chen! You are bleeding," she gasped, her hands trembling as she reached for his collar. "Let me help you. Your meridians are completely chaotic!" Stepping back, he slapped her hand away with brutal precision. His voice cut through the air like a shard of ice. "Stay away from me. I do not need your pity, nor do I need your help." Hurt flashed across her face, her eyes welling with tears before she bit her lip and backed away. Relying on others only paved the road to betrayal and ruin. He would stand alone, even if his own blood burned him to ash from the inside out. Walking away from the ruined altar, he retreated into the shadows of the academy’s outer courtyard, his steps heavy but steady. As Mu Chen wipes a trickle of black blood from his lip, his father's personal transmission jade cracks, projecting a projection of a shadow-bound Budur Executor standing over his family's burning estate.
