Chapter 3 of 10
The Ghazal Scholar's Duel

“Declining means instant deletion?” Vashni exhaled, barely loud enough to flutter the drapery. He pushed a stray lock of dark hair from his brow, his fingers tracing the fine silk of the bedsheet. “That’s hardly sporting. One might even call it… a forced narrative.”
Pasho’s fluffy tail twitched so violently it blurred. “Sporting? Boss, this isn’t a friendly game of Ghurab-Pari. This is Ghaivan! He’s trying to delete you! And the Loom of Fates isn’t known for its nuanced interpretations of ‘sporting’!” The marmot scampered onto the bed, his tiny claws snagging on the fabric. “You have to fight! Even if you just… roll over and vaguely gesture with a feather duster!”
Tuzha stayed prostrate, her posture locked in obsidian stillness. Her gaze, however, was fixed solely on Vashni, a terrifying, silent promise of violence if he so much as considered the notion of deletion.
Vashni let out a thoughtful drone. “Deletion, hmm? Interesting. So, a duel. At the Shimmering Cascade, you said?” He shifted, a faint wince crossing his features as his body protested the movement, a stark reminder of his stamina stat of one. “And I suppose a bedridden scholar is expected to miraculously sprout wings and fly there?”
Pasho threw his paws up in exasperation. “No, you’re expected to use your… familiar! That’s me! The reluctant, overworked familiar who told you to avoid this entire sub-plot!” He puffed out his chest, then deflated slightly. “It’ll be undignified. Very undignified. But I suppose it beats existential oblivion.”
“Excellent,” Vashni murmured, a hint of his usual, languid amusement returning to his eyes. “Then, my dear Pasho, prepare the finest wheeled conveyance this estate possesses. We wouldn’t want to be late for Ghaivan’s grand spectacle, would we?”
Three days later, as the twin suns of Ostadar dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of burnt ochre and deep violet, Vashni was indeed wheeled into the Shimmering Cascade Gardens. The conveyance was a rather ornate, gilded bath chair, usually reserved for the estate’s matriarch during her therapeutic soaks. Pasho, grumbling a litany of complaints about feudal aesthetics and ergonomic nightmares, strained between the handles, his small paws digging into the marble path. Tuzha, a silent shadow, walked with predatory grace beside the chair, her hands poised, her eyes scanning the milling crowd of onlookers with a possessive intensity that made several minor scholars visibly flinch away.
[DUEL INITIATION. CONTESTANTS PRESENT. ARENA WARD: ESTABLISHED.]
The tiered terrace lived up to its reputation. Terraced pools descended in gentle curves, their surfaces reflecting the last vestiges of twilight, while ethereal, bioluminescent flora pulsed with soft light. At the center, a raised platform of polished jade served as the primary dueling ground. It was here, framed by towering, crystalline arbores, that Ghaivan stood, radiating an aura of barely contained rage and theatrical self-importance. His posture was rigid, his ancestral blade, ‘The Weft-Severer,’ gleamed at his hip, and his stare, when it finally landed on Vashni, burned with raw contempt.
“Vashni!” Ghaivan’s voice boomed, amplified by the Loom’s decree, reverberating across the grounds like a cracked gong. “You dare show your… *corrupted* face here? After stealing what was rightfully mine? After mocking the very threads of destiny?” He swept an arm dramatically, encompassing the entire arena. “This duel will not simply be your end. It will be the unraveling of your very essence! Your anomalies shall be purged, your memory stripped away!”
[DESTINED ACTION: PROTAGONIST GRANDSTANDING. FATE WEAVING: ACCELERATED.]
Vashni blinked, adjusting the silken cushion behind his head. “My essence is perfectly comfortable, thank you. And as for my memory… it’s rather fragmented, actually. So, less ‘erased,’ more ‘tidied up a bit,’ perhaps?” A flicker of a smile touched his lips. “Do try to be specific with your threats, Ghaivan. It makes them so much more compelling.”
Ghaivan’s face contorted, a vein throbbing visibly in his temple. He drew The Weft-Severer with a shriek of steel, the blade seeming to drink the fading light. “Blasphemer! You mock destiny itself!” He raised the sword, and a chilling hum filled the air. Around him, the ethereal flora withered and crackled, pulling at the ambient magical energy. Algorithmic poetry, burning with intense sapphire glyphs, began to spool from his blade, forming intricate, destructive formulas in the air. Each line resonated with a terrible power, a complex theorem of annihilation. “Behold, the ‘Shattering Ghazal of Eradicating Truths’! Let this be the final stanza of your insolent existence!”
The glowing stanzas compressed into a monstrous surge of destructive syntax, skating across the jade platform and cleaving the flagged stone. It was a localized nuke, designed to atomize everything in its path.
Pasho shrieked, burrowing his head into the bath chair’s armrest. Tuzha tensed, a low growl rumbling in her throat, her stance shifting as if to intercept.
Vashni, however, casually shut his eyelids. A soft exhalation escaped his lips, a gentle sigh of profound contentment. His head lolled to the side, settling against the velvet cushion. He went completely limp, his breathing slowing until he resembled nothing more than an inert prop.
[ANOMALY DETECTED: INACTIVE PROP. TARGET PRIORITY: LOW. HITBOX RESOLUTION: NEGATED.]
The blinding wall of algorithmic ruin washed over the bath chair. It flowed *through* Vashni’s body, through the gilded metal, through the very air where he slept. The jade platform beneath him fractured, crystalline trees exploded into showers of sparkling pixels, and the tiered pools vaporized with a hiss of superheated mist. But Vashni, serene in his impromptu nap, remained utterly untouched, a perfectly rendered, yet completely inactive, object in the catastrophic aftermath.
Silence descended, thick and suffocating, punctuated only by the distant drip of runoff from cracked flutes and the whimper of Pasho, who slowly peeked out from his hiding spot. Ghaivan stood frozen, his sword still raised, his jaw dropped in raw, uncomprehending disgust. His ‘Shattering Ghazal’ had flattened half the courtyard, yet his target reclined in undisturbed, rhythmic slumber.
“What… what *is* this trickery?!” Ghaivan roared, his voice cracking. “You defy the very laws of physics! You defy *me*!” He surged forward, abandoning any semblance of duel etiquette, The Weft-Severer flashing like lightning. “I’ll cleave you myself, you glitched abomination!”
Before Ghaivan could take a second step, a blur of motion erupted from beside the bath chair. Tuzha moved in a blur, snapping forward like an uncoiling spring. Her hands, devoid of any weapon, became blurs of motion. The Weft-Severer, a legendary blade capable of cutting through solidified magic, met not flesh, but bone and muscle, clashing against Tuzha’s bare forearms with a series of sparks that lit the ruined stones. The clang of steel on bone echoed through the shattered arena, a sound both brutal and utterly impossible. She parried, deflected, and even *caught* Ghaivan’s frenzied strikes, her movements precise, economical, and braced with terrible torque. Her face remained impassive, her eyes fixed on Ghaivan with an intensity that promised unimaginable pain if he dared disturb her slumbering god.
Ghaivan, the destined hero, found himself not only repelled, but systematically dismantled. Each parry forced him back, the legendary blade ringing uselessly against the assassin’s unyielding hands. Their exchange, an unrelenting collision of tempered steel and sinew, punched shockwaves through the failing zone bounds. The very air warped and groaned, stretched thin by the impossible forces at play. With a sickening *rend*, the bounds of the Shimmering Cascade tore into a jagged, glowing fissure beside Vashni’s bath chair, exposing the raw void of un-rendered space beyond.
Vashni’s eyes fluttered open. He stretched languidly, a soft yawn escaping him. He looked around, taking in the devastation, the furious duel, and the gaping reality-tear with a detached curiosity. His gaze, however, was drawn to the rift. Within the fracture's depths, suspended in the black expanse, a faint golden glyph flickered. It was a single, unbound page, etched with unfamiliar symbols, yet the delicate loops and precise angles of the script were undeniably, hauntingly, his own handwriting.
