Chapter 7 of 10

The Rival's Gambit

The shockwave that sealed the passage shuddered through the granite, rattling the supply harness on Senja’s shoulders. Senja spat chalky grit onto the floor and planted her boots before the impassable slab. Her Pathfinder team, a dozen Kivi Institute elites, muttered behind her, their faces pale under the glow of their helmet-lights. The shifting stone had sealed clean, leaving not even a hairline fissure where the archway had stood seconds before. “Commander Senja, the fissure is stable for now,” reported Elki, the team’s scout, his voice tight. “But the tremors were… unusual. Suggest we mark the location, then fall back. We can report to headquarters. This is beyond our scope.” Senja didn’t even turn. Her gaze was fixed on the seamless wall of grey rock, a wall that had materialized with disturbing speed. Her Echo-blade, still humming faintly from its last activation, was clutched in her gauntleted hand. Retreat. The word tasted like ash. It was a word for those who failed, for those who didn't push past their limits. Reko, that infuriating, lazy disgrace, was trapped on the other side. And Jalo, the Sunken Star, was with him. Leaving them behind was unthinkable. Not because she cared for Reko, of course, but because Jalo was *her* assignment. His safety was *her* responsibility. And frankly, the idea of Reko somehow succeeding where she, Senja of the Vaaka clan, failed, made her stomach churn. “No,” she stated, her voice quiet but carrying an absolute authority that silenced the murmurs. “We’re not abandoning them.” Kaelo, her second-in-rank, stepped forward with his arms crossed over his chest plate. “That breaches field protocol. Regulations mandate squad integrity over secondary assets. We have no structural assessment of what sits behind that seam. We fall back and request heavy extraction.” Senja finally turned, her eyes, usually alight with competitive fire, now held a cold, unwavering intensity that made Kaelo take an involuntary step back. “Insubordinate?” she repeated, her voice dripping with dangerous calm. “You question my leadership, Kaelo?” “I question a reckless disregard for established safety regulations,” Kaelo shot back, emboldened by the presence of the rest of the team. “Our lives are not worth a foolish gamble for two trapped Pathfinders, one of whom is a washed-out—” Before he could finish, Senja moved. It wasn’t a wild attack, but a precise, calculated strike. Her Echo-blade, a blur of gleaming steel, whipped out, not to injure, but to disarm. Kaelo, caught off guard, stumbled as his own blade, still sheathed, was expertly knocked from his belt, clattering to the dust-coated ground. The steel clinked sharp against the granite floor. Senja stepped forward, her face inches from Kaelo’s, her voice a low, chilling whisper that still carried to every ear. “I am Commander Senja Vaaka. My word is final. You will follow, or you will be left behind to explain your dereliction of duty to the Grand Marshal yourself. Do you understand?” Kaelo, his face flushed with humiliation and fear, swallowed hard. He looked at the fallen blade, then at Senja’s unyielding gaze. “Understood,” he managed, his voice barely audible. “Good,” Senja said, pulling back. She swept her gaze across the rest of the team. No one met her eyes. Her control was absolute. “Now,” she continued, her voice regaining its usual sharp clarity, “this wall isn’t just rock. It’s dense load-bearing core rock. Standard demolition won’t work. We need a resonance fracture.” Murmurs broke out. Resonance fractures were theoretical, described only in the most advanced Pathfinder texts, barely understood even by veteran architects of the Kivi Institute. They were stress faults where the matrix failed to knit cleanly. Striking one correctly could open a passage. Striking it incorrectly could bring down an entire mountain. “Elki, run a frequency sweep,” Senja said, ignoring the team’s balking silence. “We’re looking for a harmonic dissonance in the 7.2 to 7.8 hertz range. It’ll be subtle. Everyone else, prepare your Echo-shards for a focused energy burst. We’ll need a combined kinetic and vibrational impact, precisely timed.” Under Senja’s relentless direction, the team moved with a newfound, almost desperate efficiency. Elki’s scanner whirred, its delicate sensors tracing the minute vibrations of the rockface. Minutes stretched into an eternity. Finally, a faint, blinking point appeared on Elki’s screen. “Found it, Commander! A 7.5 hertz dissonance, right here,” he pointed with a shaky finger. Senja nodded, her eyes narrowing. This was it. The gamble. “Alright, team. On my mark. One focused burst. Everyone, aim for this point. We hit it with everything you have. Do not hesitate. Do not falter.” Her gaze was fixed on the precise spot. “Three… two… one… Strike!” A blinding flash of light erupted as a dozen Echo-shards unleashed their concentrated energy. The air vibrated, a deep, resonant hum building to an unbearable crescendo. The rock wall, impossibly thick and solid moments before, groaned. Cracks, thin as spiderwebs, raced across its surface, then widened, deepening with alarming speed. Granite scree rained down, followed by a concussive blast as the slab caved inward, opening a dust-choked breech. “Move!” Senja yelled, already surging forward. The team followed, their faces a mixture of awe and fear. They burst into the adjoining vault, their lamps cutting through the fog. What they saw froze them in their tracks. Jalo was on his knees, his hands glowing with a chaotic, uncontrolled energy that flickered around him like a desperate shield. Reko, uncharacteristically disoriented, was swaying nearby, a hand pressed to his temple. And bearing down on them both, its faceless form shimmering with predatory intent, was the Shard of Absence, its crystalline spear poised to strike. It was about to finish them. There was no time for analysis, no time for protocol. Senja didn’t hesitate. With a guttural cry, she unleashed her ultimate technique, a power she had painstakingly cultivated, a force meant to shear through reinforced bedrock. But she didn’t aim for the Shard. Instead, her Echo-blade arced upwards, unleashing a focused pulse of kinetic force straight into the vaulted ceiling above the Shard of Absence. The ancient rock groaned again, a deep, tearing sound. “Porter, move!”
