Chapter 7 of 10

Descent into the Miasma

931 words

The wind shrieked, tearing at Zariya’s uniform, snatching away any sound but its own furious howl. Her vision blurred, the rapidly receding lights of Ostrana above twisting into a dizzying spiral, while the churning, polluted clouds of Earth rushed upward to meet them like a hungry maw. The metallic tang of fear coated her tongue, stark and unwelcome. “Brace for impact!” she yelled, her voice lost even to her own ears. Her training, her honed reflexes, her entire identity as a Zenith prodigy, were utterly useless here. She was a leaf caught in a hurricane, a speck of dust in the vast, indifferent void. All she could do was cling to Fennik, her knuckles white where she gripped the rough fabric of his utility vest. Fennik, meanwhile, looked less like he was plummeting to his doom and more like he was calmly assessing a stubborn stain. His brow furrowed in concern, not for their imminent demise, but for *her*. “Are you alright, Zariya? We’re going awfully fast,” he asked, his voice surprisingly calm, almost conversational, despite the chaos. “No, Fennik, I am *not* alright! We’re about to become paste!” She didn't scream, but her words were tight, edged with desperation. Below them, the swirling green and grey of the smog-choked surface grew terrifyingly distinct. Jagged spires of blight-stained rock, rivers of luminous sludge, and the dark, hulking shapes of colossal leviathans became visible through the gaps in the clouds. Bix, curled tightly on Fennik’s shoulder, let out a soft, rumbling purr, seemingly unfazed. The little furball had the unnerving habit of treating existential threats as naptime opportunities. “Oh. Well, I’ll try to make a soft landing then,” Fennik replied, as if he were merely adjusting his grip on a particularly heavy broom. He shifted, subtly turning his body, presenting his back toward the terrain, preparing to take the brunt of the collision. Zariya felt a surge of unadulterated terror, followed by a flicker of exasperated affection. He truly was pathologically kind, even when falling a kilometer to his death. The air thickened, growing humid and acrid with the lower atmosphere's toxic perfume. The impact was no longer a question of *if*, but *when*. Zariya closed her eyes, pressing her face into Fennik’s back, her last thought a frustrated, despairing wish that she could have been more useful. Her elite combat class, the 'Storm Weaver,' was built for precision strikes and aerial maneuvers, not for surviving a head-on collision with a planet. Then, a sudden, violent deceleration, a colossal *THUD* that shook her bones even through Fennik’s body. The terrain rose up, not with a bone-shattering crunch, but with a deep, resonant *boom* that echoed across the desolate landscape. It was like hitting a giant, mud-filled cushion. A cloud of pulverized dirt, phosphor-bright with emerald motes, exploded outwards, briefly blinding them. When the dust settled, Zariya found herself coughing, tasting grit and stale air. She was still clinging to Fennik, whose back felt remarkably un-shattered beneath her. They had carved a massive basin into the soaked soil, a perfect, bowl-shaped indentation dozens of meters wide. Fennik sat at the center, looking slightly disheveled but otherwise perfectly intact. Bix yawned, stretching its tiny paws. “See? Not too bad,” Fennik said, offering her a small, reassuring smile. “Just a bit dusty.” Zariya pushed herself away, scrambling to her feet, her gaze sweeping across the apocalyptic landscape. The air was thick with a sickly sweet scent, the dirt a shifting mosaic of mutated flora and mineral deposits. But it wasn’t the environment that stole her breath. It was the crowd. They were surrounded. Not by a few stragglers, but by thousands upon thousands of shadowed monsters. Goliaths with too many eyes, reptilian horrors with wings of bone, chitinous creatures that pulsed with internal green light. They stood flank to flank, filling the depression's rim and stretching into the hazy distance, their forms grotesque, yet… still. Silent. Their myriad eyes, gleam-bright with unnatural light, were fixed on Fennik. Zariya drew her twin shortswords, the balance of the Solstice Blades a small comfort. Her Storm Weaver core thrummed, ready to unleash a gale of crackling energy. But the beasts didn’t move. They simply watched, their massive bodies radiating an unnerving stillness. There was no aggression, no predatory snarl. Only a vast, silent congregation. Then, from the throng, a truly colossal shape began to stir. It was the Weeping Behemoth, the very creature Fennik had pacified in the academy’s fracture. Its once-terrifying form, now smaller and infused with a soft, mournful aura, lumbered forward, parting the sea of monsters as it approached the crater. Its massive, tear-stained face nudged Fennik’s collar with gentle affection, a low, rumbling sound emanating from its chest. Fennik looked up at the behemoth, a soft smile gracing his lips. “Hello, friend. You remember me.” The Behemoth rumbled again, nudging him more insistently, its luminescent eyes fixed on him with a depth of ancient understanding that raised goosebumps along Zariya’s arms. The other creatures on the hollow's edge began to lower their heads, one by one, a tide of silent reverence rippling through the entire horde. It wasn't submission, Zariya realized. It was… homage. Then, a chime, clearer and more resonant than any she had ever heard, echoed in the Miasma-choked air. It wasn't just in her mind; it seemed to reverberate from the very ground beneath them.
