Chapter 4 of 10
The Resonance Loophole

The symbol. It was the same stylized sun Ostrom wore on his signet ring, the same one etched into the polished floors of the Zenith Bastion. The woman shuddered, a low moan escaping her lips, before shuffling forward with her misty companions. They weren’t attacking, not truly. They were just… walking, aimlessly, their vacant gazes drifting past Fennik as if he were another crumbling wall.
“They’re not hostile,” Fennik murmured, holding out a hand, palm up. Bix let out a soft rumble from his shoulder. “They’re just… lost.”
“Lost isn’t an affliction state,” Zariya hissed, pulling Fennik back by his tattered sleeve. Her collarbone throbbed where a falling shard of the chute’s casing had sliced her skin. “It’s artificial corruption. And that port… it’s a direct feed. Someone is pumping the blight straight into people down here.” Her voice dropped to a fierce whisper. “Ostrom.”
Fennik’s face crumpled, chin trembling. Before he could respond, a low, guttural growl echoed from deeper in the alley. A massive, four-legged creature, its fur matted with refuse and glowing with patches of synthetic violet rot, lumbered into view.
“Run!” Zariya barked, dragging Fennik forward. They scrambled through a maze of crumbling tenements, amid the stench of decay and the scorch of battery acid. Zariya’s laceration stung with every jarring step. Eventually, they found a rusted grate leading into a collapsed sub-level, a forgotten network of tunnels beneath the Under-city.
They tumbled into a cavernous space, dimly lit by cracks in the ceiling that allowed slivers of the toxic sky to penetrate. It was a ruin, but a green one. Faded, skeletal trellises clung to the walls, and the ghost of a vast hydroponic farm lingered in the air, a faint, sweet smell of forgotten earth. Broken glass lay scattered across moss-covered pipes. Zariya sank against a collapsed nutrient tank, pressing a hand to her bleeding collarbone. The cut was shallow, but the smog of the Under-city already hung thick in her throat.
Fennik, meanwhile, surveyed their surroundings. Bix hopped from his collar, sniffing at a cluster of withered, dark-leaved plants, then sneezed, puffing grey grit. Fennik unhooked his broom and began to sweep a small patch of concrete.
“You should clean your wound,” Fennik said, his voice quiet. He dipped the broom’s bristles into a puddle of brackish water that had gathered in a cracked basin, then swept it in slow circles. A faint, silver glow emanated from the water, swirling away the murky green until it shimmered, crystal clear. “Here.” He extended a cupped palm, filled with the purified liquid.
Zariya eyed the water, then the broom. “You… you purified that with your broom?” she asked, a hint of disbelief in her tone. “That’s not… standard janitorial equipment.”
“It’s very good at cleaning,” Fennik said, a simple truth in his voice. “It makes everything better. Even water.” He looked at her, his kind eyes searching her face. “Your collarbone.”
Reluctantly, Zariya took the offered water. It felt cool against her skin. She poured it over the gash, watching the faint violet residue wash cleanly into the dirt. “Thanks,” she mumbled, feeling a prickle of shame for her earlier skepticism.
Silence settled between them, broken only by the drip of water and Bix’s soft rustling. Zariya watched Fennik, who was now carefully patting down a section of the floor with his broom, making it somehow… softer. He was so utterly, relentlessly *good*. It was a quality she’d spent her life dismissing, even ridiculing.
“I… I was jealous, you know,” Zariya confessed, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. Her voice was rough, unaccustomed to such naked honesty. She didn’t look at him, instead focusing on a patch of phosphorescent moss on the wall. “At the Awakening Ceremony. Everyone was laughing, throwing trash. And you just… cleaned it. And then you cleaned that monster. You cleaned *everything*. You faced down an S-Rank fracture beast, and all you cared about was its pain.” She finally met his gaze, her own eyes fierce but clouded with a vulnerability he’d never seen. “I wanted to be like that. To not care what anyone thought, to just… be kind. But I’ve always been too angry. Too afraid.”
Fennik looked at her, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, a small, gentle smile touched his lips. “You’re not angry, Zariya,” he said softly. “You’re just… hurting.” He reached out, his fingers brushing against her arm, a comforting, light touch. A spark of static snapped against her collar. Heat rose into her cheeks, chasing off the chill of the damp vault.
Just as she was about to respond, to say something, anything, Bix let out an enormous, wet sneeze. It wasn’t a cute little furball sneeze. It was a resonant *KA-THOOOM!* A blast of raw, cosmic energy erupted from the tiny creature, ripping through the wall of the greenhouse, tearing a gaping, jagged crater into the reinforced concrete and iron girders. Dust, debris, and the faint, shimmering remnants of something ancient and powerful rained down.
Zariya stared at the hole, then at Bix, who was now innocently grooming his face with a tiny paw. “What… what *was* that?” she gasped, her voice barely a whisper.
Fennik, meanwhile, had dropped his broom in surprise. A series of soft chimes emanated from him, visible only to Zariya as a faint, golden glow.
[Empathy Milestone Achieved!]
[Target: Bix (World-Eating Titan, Juvenile)]
[Connection Established: Deeper Understanding]
[Stat Multiplier Applied: Durability x100,000,000% (Cumulative: x1,000,000,000,000%)]
Zariya’s eyes darted to Fennik’s Resonance Lattice read-out, which now glowed with an almost blinding intensity. The readout flared gold, impossible glyphs cascading across the air. They kept growing, scrolling past faster than her mind could process. *Durability: ∞*. And then the monster’s name… *World-Eating Titan, Juvenile*.
“Bix isn’t just a furball,” Zariya breathed, looking from Fennik to the innocent-looking dust-creature. “He’s… he’s a baby cosmic horror. And your ‘Empathy Milestones’… they’re not just stat buffs, Fennik. They’re *infinite*.” The system, built to categorize and constrain, harbored an unpluggable exploit in Fennik’s hands.
Before either of them could fully process this revelation, heavy footsteps echoed from the newly created breach in the wall. A group of figures, burly and menacing, strode into the greenhouse, their faces hardened by years of life in the Under-city. They wore crudely fashioned armor and carried blunt, brutal weapons. A clenched fist clutching a shard of obsidian was tattooed across their forearms—the mark of the Shade Fist syndicate.
Leading them was a hulking man with a scarred face and a sneer. He held a small, trembling child, no older than six, by the collar. The child’s eyes were wide with terror, a dirt-stained, hand-carved wooden bird clutched tightly in their small fist. The man’s gaze fell on Fennik, then on Zariya, and finally on the gaping hole Bix had created.
“Well, well, what have we here?” the scarred man rumbled, his voice like gravel. He tossed the child forward, who stumbled and fell, whimpering. “The Bastion sent word. Said a ‘Demon Lord’ and his pet had fallen into our territory. Said they’d pay a hefty bounty for his return.” He kicked the wooden bird away from the child. “Surrender, Janitor, and maybe we don’t make an example of the kid.”
