Chapter 29: Public Outcry, Private Fortress

978 words

Screaming headlines assaulted Elara before her coffee even cooled. "Thorne Billionaire's Fiancée: A Shady Past?" blared a digital billboard outside their penthouse, its pixels flashing her face, distorted and accusatory. Adrian's phone vibrated incessantly. News alerts cascaded across the screen: "Elara Vance: Linked to International Art Forgery Ring?" Another read: "Thorne Enterprises' Morality Clause Breached?" "It's happening," Elara whispered, her hand trembling as she scrolled through the venomous comments beneath a news article. Accusations of her being a gold-digger, a criminal, a deceitful manipulator flooded the comments section. Her stomach churned. Adrian snatched her phone, silencing the hateful chorus. His jaw tightened, a muscle twitching near his ear. "We knew this was coming. Orion is efficient, if nothing else." Footage from years ago, grainy and doctored, filled every major news outlet. A snippet of her outside a gallery under investigation. A blurred image of her speaking with a man later implicated in the scandal. All presented without context, twisted into damning evidence. Reporters had already begun to stake out the building's perimeter. Flashes from their cameras painted the living room in stark, unwelcome light, even through the tinted windows. His security team leader, Marcus, arrived, his face grim. "Sir, the media presence is unprecedented. Investors are calling, some demanding immediate meetings. The board is in an uproar." Adrian nodded, his eyes like chips of obsidian. "Expected. Divert all calls to Liam. Tell the board to convene an emergency meeting. I'll be there virtually. And get Elara a direct line to your team. No one gets near her." Protecting Elara was his immediate priority. He pulled her into his arms, feeling the tremor that still ran through her. "It's a manufactured storm. We'll weather it." "But Adrian, your deal," she murmured against his chest. "The one with the consortium. This could sink it. Orion wants to ruin you, not just me." "He wants control," Adrian corrected, his voice a low growl. "He wants to dismantle Thorne, not just damage it. And he thinks discrediting you, discrediting *us*, is the way to do it. He's wrong." Hours later, the emergency board meeting was a cacophony of panicked voices. Liam, Adrian's consigliere, stood by his side, relaying messages and managing the barrage of technical issues as Adrian dialed in. "Adrian, this is disastrous!" Board member Eleanor Finch's voice shrieked through the speaker. "Our stock has plummeted five points in an hour! The consortium is threatening to pull out!" Another voice, Rupert Sterling, boomed. "You brought this on us, Adrian! This woman, her past… it's a liability! We need to issue a statement, distance ourselves immediately!" Adrian let them vent, his expression unreadable. He waited for a lull, then spoke, his voice calm but infused with an authority that cut through the noise. "Are you finished?" Silence descended. Even through the virtual connection, his presence commanded attention. "Let me be unequivocally clear," Adrian stated, his gaze hard. "Elara Vance is my fiancée. She is innocent of these baseless accusations. This is a targeted smear campaign, designed to destabilize Thorne Enterprises and specifically, my leadership." Sterling scoffed. "A smear campaign? It's public record, Adrian!" Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Public record can be manipulated. Context can be removed. Truth can be buried. I have evidence that proves Elara's innocence, and the direct involvement of parties attempting to undermine this company." He continued, his voice rising in intensity. "The consortium deal *will* proceed. Any attempt by this board, or anyone else, to sever ties with Elara will be met with the full legal and financial might of Thorne Enterprises. I will not stand by and watch my future wife be slandered, nor will I allow this company to be held hostage by cowards." Eleanor’s voice, now timid, came through. "But what about our investors? The public perception?" "We will address it," Adrian asserted. "I will issue a public statement within the hour. It will not be an apology. It will be a declaration. To Elara, to the public, and most importantly, to those orchestrating this attack: Thorne Enterprises stands united. And we will fight back." He disconnected the call, leaving a stunned silence in the boardroom. He turned to Liam. "Prepare the statement. Make sure it's released to every major news outlet simultaneously. And contact our legal team. I want every single entity that published these lies without due diligence to face a lawsuit." Liam's eyes glinted with understanding. "Consider it done, Adrian." Elara watched him, a fierce pride swelling in her chest. He wasn't just defending her honor; he was staking his entire empire on her, on them. This wasn't a charade anymore. It was a war. Later, Adrian stood before a wall of microphones, the flashing lights momentarily blinding. He looked directly into the cameras, his posture regal, unyielding. "Good evening," he began, his voice steady, carrying across the tense assembly. "I am here today to address the malicious and fabricated stories circulating about my fiancée, Elara Vance." He paused, letting his words hang in the air. "Let me be clear: Ms. Vance is a woman of integrity and strength. The allegations against her are unequivocally false, a desperate attempt by nefarious actors to disrupt my business and personal life." His voice hardened, each word a hammer blow. "I stand by Elara Vance, fully and without reservation. Anyone who believes they can use her past, or any manufactured scandal, to threaten Thorne Enterprises, or to harm my fiancée, will face the full, unyielding force of my retribution." "This is not a retreat," Adrian declared, his gaze sweeping over the eager faces of the press. "This is a line in the sand. Consider this a warning. To those attempting to tear us down, know this: You have just declared war on Thorne Enterprises. And we will win." He turned and walked away, leaving a stunned media circus in his wake. The message was unmistakable. The game had changed. The fight had begun.
