Chapter 40: A Love Confessed

902 words

Sweat beaded on Elara's brow as she clutched the burner phone. Its chilling words echoed in her mind: 'Surrender, or Lily pays the price.' Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Giving herself up felt like signing her own death warrant. But what choice did she have? Lily's pale face, the fragile rise and fall of her chest, flashed before Elara’s eyes. Her daughter's life was paramount. A plan, desperate and terrifying, began to form. She needed to contact someone. But who could she trust now? Every shadow felt like a threat. Suddenly, a violent pounding erupted at her apartment door. Elara jumped, her hand flying to her mouth. Cerberus? Already? Cassian’s voice, sharp and urgent, cut through the wood. "'Elara! Open this door, now!'" Relief flooded her, quickly followed by a fresh wave of panic. He couldn’t be here. He couldn’t get involved. This was her fight. Pushing herself away from the wall, Elara smoothed her trembling hands over her jeans. She took a steadying breath. "'Cassian, what are you doing here?'" she called out, trying to keep her voice even. "'Don't play coy with me, Elara. I saw the news about Lily. And I know you just got off the phone with someone from Cerberus. Open the damn door!'" His voice vibrated with a raw intensity she rarely heard. Knowing she couldn't keep him out, Elara slowly turned the lock. The door swung inward, revealing Cassian. His eyes, usually cool and calculating, burned with a furious worry. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, as if he'd run all the way here. His gaze swept over her, taking in her pallor, the faint tremor in her hands. "'What happened, Elara? Tell me everything. Is Lily okay?'" Looking away, Elara swallowed hard. "'Lily is… stable. For now. It was… an accident. A medical mishap.'" The lie tasted like ash. Cassian stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click. "'Don't insult my intelligence. 'A medical mishap' that happens right after Cerberus issues an ultimatum? To your daughter? They sabotaged her IV, didn't they?'" His voice dropped, thick with controlled rage. Her shoulders slumped. There was no point in pretending. "'They threatened her. They said… if I don't surrender myself to them, they'll ensure Lily never leaves that hospital bed.'" Her voice cracked on the last word. Cassian's jaw clenched, a muscle twitching violently. His knuckles whitened as he balled his hands into fists. "'No. Absolutely not. You are not going anywhere near those monsters.'" "'What else can I do?'" Elara cried, finally looking at him, tears stinging her eyes. "'You saw what they did! They got into a secure hospital, into Lily's room! They'll stop at nothing. I have to protect her. I'm the only one who can.'" Stepping closer, Cassian reached out, his hands gently gripping her shoulders. His eyes, usually so guarded, now held an alarming depth of vulnerability. "'You think you're alone in this? You think I'll just stand by and watch you sacrifice yourself?'" His thumbs stroked her skin, a comforting warmth spreading through her. "'Elara… I can’t lose you. I can’t lose either of you.'" The words were a guttural whisper, ripped from a place deep inside him. Her breath hitched. She stared up at him, her heart thrumming. The raw emotion in his voice was unlike anything she'd ever heard from him. "'Since the day you walked into my office, you've turned my world upside down. I fought it. God, I fought it so hard.'" A humorless laugh escaped him. "'But I can't anymore. I love you, Elara. I love you more than I thought possible.'" His confession hung in the air, heavy and profound. Elara felt a tremor pass through her entire body. Love. He said he loved her. The words were a balm to her wounded soul, yet terrifying in their implications. "'I love Lily, too. She's… she's become my daughter, Elara. My little fighter.'" His eyes glistened, betraying the stoic facade he usually maintained. "'I will protect you both. Whatever it takes. I won't let Cerberus touch you. I swear it.'" Elara’s own carefully constructed walls crumbled. For so long, she had pushed him away, fearing the power he held, fearing the vulnerability loving him would bring. But seeing him now, stripped bare of his usual arrogance, his heart laid open… it was impossible to resist. A sob escaped her, unexpected and raw. Her hands, which had been pressed against her chest, now reached up, gripping the lapels of his expensive suit jacket. Her gaze locked with his, searching for any hint of doubt, any lie. There was none. Only desperate, unwavering truth. "'I… I love you too, Cassian,'" she whispered, the words finally breaking free. They felt right, profound, like a missing piece clicking into place. Tears streamed down her face, not of sorrow, but of a fierce, aching relief. His arms wrapped around her instantly, pulling her against his chest. She buried her face in his shoulder, inhaling his familiar scent – crisp cologne and something uniquely him. His embrace was a fortress, a promise. Holding her tightly, Cassian pressed a kiss to her hair. "'We'll face this together. You and me. And Lily.'" His voice was rough, but imbued with a new resolve. "'They think they can scare us, break us apart. They don't know who they're dealing with.'" Pulling back slightly, Elara looked into his eyes again, her own still wet with tears but now shining with a newfound strength. "'What do we do?'" A grim smile touched his lips, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "'We fight. We give them a fight they'll never forget. But first, we ensure Lily's safety. And then, we bring Cerberus Holdings down.'" His determination was infectious. With his arms still around her, Elara felt a surge of courage. She wasn't alone. They were in this together. And together, they might just stand a chance against the monstrous power threatening their fragile future. The battle had just begun.
