Chapter 33: A Coded Message
917 words
Adrenaline still coursed through Elara’s veins, a cold tremor echoing the recent explosion. Cassian’s arms tightened around her and Mia, a protective cage that had shielded them from the worst. The acrid smell of burnt rubber and scorched metal still clung to the air, even after the emergency services had cleared the immediate vicinity.
“Are you hurt?” His voice was raw, a guttural sound she hadn't heard before. His grip remained, almost bruising, as if letting go would make them vanish.
Mia whimpered softly against his chest, her small hand clutching his shirt. Her eyes were wide, but she seemed more startled than injured, a miracle Elara couldn't quite comprehend.
Paramedics swarmed, their movements urgent. They checked Elara and Mia first, then Cassian, his grim expression unwavering even as they bandaged a deep gash on his forearm. He’d thrown himself over them, taking the brunt of the flying debris.
Inside the secure, sterile confines of Cassian’s private medical suite, an eerie quiet settled. Lily was already transferred, her condition stable, if still precarious. Elara watched Cassian pace, his footsteps heavy on the polished floor. The cold facade was back, but a deeper, more dangerous fury simmered beneath.
He barked orders into his comms. “I want every scrap of information. Every witness. Every camera feed. Every whisper. Find them.” His voice was low, laced with venom.
Screens flickered around them, displaying a live feed from Thorne Bio-Tech’s security hub. Leo, Cassian’s head of security, appeared on one, his face grim.
“Boss, we’ve secured the perimeter and initiated a full system lockdown. Reviewing all traffic, both digital and physical.”
Cassian nodded, a sharp, decisive movement. “I need more than a lockdown, Leo. I need the name. The face. The motive.”
Hours blurred into a tense, agonizing night. Mia, thankfully, had drifted off to sleep in Elara's arms, exhausted by the ordeal. Elara watched Cassian work, a relentless machine fueled by an inferno of rage and protectiveness. He moved with a predatory grace, his gaze fixed on the glowing screens.
Suddenly, Leo’s voice cut through the silence again, sharper this time. “Boss, we got something. A highly encrypted data burst. It originated from an untraceable server farm, but the routing path suggests an internal source, a ghost IP masking as external.”
Cassian stopped his pacing. “Put it up. Decode it.”
Digits scrolled rapidly across the largest display. Elara felt a knot tighten in her stomach. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of anticipation and dread.
“It’s a multi-layered cipher,” Leo explained, his fingers flying across his keyboard. “Military-grade, almost. But our algorithm is making progress.”
The air thickened with unspoken tension. Elara held her breath, Mia’s soft snores the only sound besides the rhythmic hum of the computers. The seconds stretched into an eternity.
Then, text began to appear. Slowly at first, garbled fragments, then clearer, more coherent sentences.
“...discredit Cassian Thorne... public humiliation… board vote… hostile takeover… Thorne Bio-Tech assets…”
Cassian’s hand clenched into a fist. His knuckles turned white. His jaw hardened, a muscle twitching in his cheek. The words confirmed their worst fears: a targeted attack, meticulously planned.
“Who?” Elara whispered, her voice barely audible. Her gaze darted to Cassian, whose eyes were fixed on the screen, burning with an unholy fire.
More lines of text resolved. “...Executive Board member, Arthur Finch, designated primary operative… leverage financial irregularities… plant evidence… influence key shareholders…”
Arthur Finch. Elara remembered the man. A slick, ambitious executive, always lurking in the periphery of Thorne Bio-Tech events, his smile too wide, his eyes too calculating. He’d always seemed subservient to Cassian, a loyal subordinate. The betrayal stung, even for her.
“He tried to kill my daughter,” Cassian stated, his voice devoid of emotion, yet radiating a chilling intensity. It was a promise, not a declaration.
Leo continued to decode. “There’s more, Boss. This seems to be a status update, or perhaps instructions for further actions. A secondary contact, providing oversight and additional resources.”
Another line of encrypted text resolved, slower this time, almost as if resisting the decryption efforts. A series of letters appeared, then a symbol, then a fragmented name.
Elara leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. A strange sense of unease settled over her. The name seemed… familiar.
“...Primary contact: ‘Shadow Weaver’…” The words materialized, stark against the dark screen. “...Instructions from ‘S.W.’: Ensure complete silence. Eliminate all loose ends. Proceed with Phase Two: Asset Acquisition…”
Shadow Weaver. The codename itself was sinister. But it was the fragmented name that followed, a single, distorted initial and a partial surname, that made Elara’s blood run cold.
‘K. Val—’ The rest was still obscured, but the letters, the feel of them, resonated deeply within her. A memory, long buried, began to surface, sharp and unwelcome. A face, a voice, from a past she had desperately tried to forget.
Her breath hitched. She knew that name. Or, at least, part of it. A shadowy figure from her own fractured history, one she’d hoped she would never encounter again.
“Cassian,” Elara breathed, her eyes wide with a sudden, horrifying recognition. “I… I think I know who that is.”
Cassian turned to her, his expression a mask of grim determination. “Who, Elara?” His voice was urgent, sensing the profound impact of her words. He needed answers. He needed names. And Elara, it seemed, just provided a crucial piece to the puzzle, one that linked his present danger to her own shadowed past.
