Chapter 26 of 50

Shattered Trust

931 words

Heartbeat hammered against Elara’s ribs. Thorne’s smooth, terrifying voice still echoed in the study, a predator’s purr. Her fingers, still clutching the will and ledger, trembled uncontrollably. He hadn't seen them. Not yet. She had to believe that. Darting from the study, she didn't look back. Her mind raced, a terrifying kaleidoscope of Mia’s parents, Project Lumina, Thorne, and Cassian. Cassian. His warnings, his silences, his sudden appearances. It all clicked into a horrifying, grotesque pattern. Finding him became an urgent, desperate need. She stumbled through the grand halls, the opulent decor now feeling like a gilded cage. Every shadow seemed to hold a threat, every distant sound like Thorne's return. Spotting him in the drawing-room, gazing out a window, a cold, hard knot twisted in her stomach. He looked so calm. So composed. How could he? "Cassian!" Her voice tore through the quiet, raw and frayed. He turned, his dark eyes meeting hers, a flicker of concern crossing his face. A concern she now knew was a lie. A calculated act. "Elara? What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost." He started towards her, his hand reaching out. Recoiling, she held up the tattered documents like a shield. Or perhaps, like a weapon. "Don't touch me! Don't you dare touch me!" His hand froze in mid-air. Confusion creased his brow, but it vanished quickly, replaced by a guarded stillness. A stillness that spoke of secrets. Of carefully constructed walls. "What is this?" he asked, his voice low, his gaze fixed on the papers. "This?" A bitter laugh escaped her lips, choked with tears. "This is the truth, Cassian. The truth you tried to keep from me. The truth about Mia's parents. About Project Lumina. About *you*." Her voice cracked on the last word. Every comforting touch, every protective gesture, every shared glance now felt like a cruel deception. A tender trap, indeed. Holding up the yellowed will, her hand shook so violently the paper rattled. "Arthur and Lillian Hayes. Mia's parents. Not just some anonymous couple, were they? No, they were the brilliant minds behind Project Lumina. The groundbreaking bio-tech patent everyone is after." Cassian's jaw tightened. His eyes, usually so expressive, became unreadable. He remained silent, a silent admission of guilt that tore a fresh wound in her heart. "And this." She thrust the worn leather ledger forward, its pages overflowing with precise, damning entries. "This shows the illicit transfer. The patent stolen. Transferred to Arthur Thorne, CEO of Thorne Bio-Tech. Around the time of their deaths, wasn't it?" Her voice rose, sharp with accusation. "Funny how that works, isn't it? Murdered. Their legacy stolen. And you? You knew. You knew all along, didn't you? You brought me here, into this house of lies, under false pretenses!" A tear finally broke free, tracing a hot path down her cheek. "You wanted me to find something, didn't you? Something specific. You were manipulating me. Using me. All for your grand plan." He finally moved, taking a step closer. "Elara, it's not what you think—" "Don't you dare tell me what I think!" she interrupted, her voice a raw scream of pain. "I think you're a liar! A manipulator! You befriended me, you protected me, you… you even kissed me! All while knowing this monstrous secret!" Her chest heaved with the force of her anguish. The weight of his betrayal was a physical ache, pressing down on her, stealing her breath. "Mia. Her parents. Their deaths weren't an accident, were they? It was Thorne. He killed them for the patent, and you… you were right there, orchestrating everything from the shadows, making sure I walked right into your trap." Cassian’s face was etched with a complex emotion she couldn't decipher – regret, perhaps, or a desperate kind of pain. But she didn't care. Not anymore. "I needed you to be safe," he said, his voice quiet, almost a whisper. "I needed to protect you. From Thorne. From *him*." "Protect me?" A hollow laugh escaped her. "You plunged me deeper into danger! You made me a pawn in your vendetta! You knew I was searching for the truth about Mia, and you dangled it just out of reach, waiting for me to connect your dots!" The image of Thorne, his seemingly benign smile, flashed in her mind. He was here. In the house. And Cassian had known. Cassian had *known* Thorne was connected to the deaths, to the patent, to everything. And he had kept her in the dark. "I trusted you, Cassian. More than anyone. I told you things. I leaned on you. I believed in you." Her voice broke, the words dissolving into a choked sob. "And all this time, you were just… playing a part." She looked at the documents in her hand, then at his face, seeing a stranger where she had once seen a protector, a confidant, something more. The truth was a poisoned chalice. "The will explicitly names Thorne as the recipient of the patent if Mia's parents die. Not Mia. Not next of kin. Thorne!" she accused, thrusting the will towards him. "Who crafts a will like that? Who benefits so cleanly from a 'tragic accident'?" Cassian's gaze finally dropped to the papers, scanning the text. A muscle in his jaw twitched. He looked up, his eyes meeting hers, a desperate plea in their depths. "Elara, please. Let me explain. There's so much you don't know. The situation is far more complicated than it appears." His voice was earnest, his tone pleading. But his words were lost. Lost in the deafening roar of her shattered trust. Lost in the agonizing echo of his lies. Lost in the gaping void where her hope for him had once resided. The image of Arthur Thorne's chilling smile, the one she’d just witnessed, superimposed itself over Cassian’s face. The two men, entwined in a web of deceit and death, became one amorphous threat. She shook her head, tears streaming freely now. "There's nothing to explain. Only lies. You built a wall of them between us, brick by careful brick." Turning away, her shoulders shaking, she walked towards the door, the will and ledger still clutched tight. Each step was an effort, each breath a fresh stab of pain. Cassian called her name, his voice urgent, but she didn't stop. Couldn't stop. Not now. Not ever again. The man she thought she knew was a phantom, and the reality was a crushing, unbearable weight.
