The Real Deal

Zesara’s vision blurred at his words. *The contract is void. Pack your things.* The stark finality of it pierced through the adrenaline still thrumming in her veins. It was over. Just like that. The company was safe, and Timo's custody remained the singular purpose binding her here. Now, there was no longer any need for her. Her ribs squeezed tight, freezing her more thoroughly than the coastal salt breeze off the cliff. She had braced for this conclusion, yet the reality struck like a slap across the cheek. She had fallen in love with him, irrevocably, foolishly. And now, she was being dismissed. The ancient certainty that everyone eventually walked away clawed up her throat with brutal clarity.
“Right,” she managed, her voice a reedy whisper she barely recognized. She forced a stiff nod, her chin trembling despite her best efforts. “I understand. I’ll… I’ll start immediately.” She wouldn’t beg. She refused to let him see the hollow cave carved behind her ribs.
A crease cut between Orenzo’s brows. He reached out, his hand hovering for a second before lightly settling on her arm. The touch, usually a spark, now felt like a brand, searing through her thin blouse. “Zesara,” he said, his voice lower, softer now, a stark contrast to his earlier pronouncement. “Come with me.”
Her gaze flickered to his hand, then to his eyes, still unreadable. “Where?” she asked, a sliver of bewildered hope she quickly squashed. There was no 'where' other than her small apartment in the city. Her home.
He didn't answer, merely turned, his grip firm on her arm as he guided her from the terrace, past the now-silent Kaelin Varos and his Qalaran security detail who were escorting a subdued Valencio Morad from the estate grounds. She walked mechanically, her mind a numb fog, expecting him to steer her toward the guest wing, perhaps the modest room she had originally occupied before the chaos of their fake engagement. But he didn’t. He led her deeper into the sprawling Vettori Estate, past the antechambers, past the grand hall, past the guest suites, until they arrived at a section of the residence she hadn't seen before. A new wing, bathed in the soft, ambient glow of recessed lighting, leading to a massive, polished door.
He pushed it open. The space beyond was breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling windows curved around a vast, circular room, offering an uninterrupted vista of the glittering Vespari coastline and the churning, dark sea below. A plush, deep indigo rug covered the polished onyx floor, mirroring the night sky. In the center, a bed, larger than any she had ever seen, was draped in raw silk, its headboard a sculpted piece of dark, ancient wood. But it wasn’t just the opulence that caught her attention. Her eyes drifted to the largest window, which overlooked the estate’s ancient, sprawling oak tree. Nestled within its massive branches, lit by soft, warm lanterns, was a multi-tiered wooden structure, complete with rope bridges and a small, inviting balcony. A treehouse.
Her throat tightened. “The… the treehouse?” she whispered, her voice cracking. “For Timo?”
Orenzo watched her, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “I had it commissioned last night, after the incident with the drone. He mentioned wanting one, back when he first visited.” He paused, his gaze sweeping over the new suite, then back to her. “This is the new Master Suite, Zesara. Our Master Suite.”
Her mind reeled, trying to reconcile his words with the cold dismissal she had just heard. “But… the contract is void,” she repeated, her voice laced with confusion and a fragile, burgeoning hope. “You said to pack my things.”
He stepped closer, his hand leaving her arm to cup her jaw, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheekbone. His gaze held steady, clear and stripped of calculation. “I did. Because the *contract* was an insult to what I feel for you. To what *we* are.” He lowered himself onto one knee, slowly, deliberately, his gaze never leaving hers. From his inner jacket pocket, he produced a small, velvet box. He opened it. Nestled inside, on a bed of dark silk, gleamed a ring unlike anything she had ever seen. It wasn’t the large, conventional diamond she’d worn for show. This was a single, flawless beryl stone, the color of the deep Vespari bay, flanked by delicate pavé diamonds and set in an intricate filigree band of aged platinum. It radiated an antique elegance, a quiet power. A true heirloom.
He took her left hand, sliding off the oversized diamond band from their public appearances and pocketing it. Then, slowly, he pushed the sea-hued ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, like it had always belonged there.
“Zesara Fane,” he began, his voice thick with emotion, his gaze unwavering. “I loved you from the moment you mocked my tie in that board meeting, the day you walked into my office. Your wit, your fire, your utter refusal to be intimidated by me or my reputation. You see past the title, past the cold exterior, to the man beneath. You brought light into my world, and peace into my nights. You’re not just the reason I sleep; you’re the reason I wake. You are the heart of this home, the anchor of my sanity, the fierce protector of your brother, and the only woman who has ever truly seen me.”
He paused, taking a visible breath, his eyes shining. “I know I am not an easy man. I know I’ve been guarded, perhaps even cruel in my distance. But I promise you, Zesara, with every breath I take, I will dedicate my life to making you happy, to cherishing you, and to building a real, honest life with you and Timo. My father’s ring, this aquamarine, has been passed down through the Vettori line for generations. It symbolizes unwavering devotion, clarity of purpose, and the calm strength found in the deepest waters. I want to replace the lies of our temporary arrangement with the truth of my absolute love. Zesara Fane, will you do me the profound honor of becoming my real wife? My partner. My everything?”
Her vision was utterly obscured by tears now, hot and plentiful, streaming down her face. This was real. This was everything she had ever dreamed of, everything her heart had yearned for. The old terror of an empty doorway faded, swept away by the solid grip of his fingers against hers. “Yes,” she choked out, her voice barely audible through her sobs. “Oh, Orenzo, yes! A thousand times, yes!”
He rose, pulling her into a fierce embrace, his arms wrapping around her with a strength that both protected and claimed. His lips found hers, not with the practiced formality of their earlier masquerade, but with a raw, undeniable passion that swept her off her feet. It was a kiss that broke all remaining barriers, a promise sealed with soul-deep conviction, utterly consuming, wiping away every doubt, every fear, every trace of their staged history. Her hands tangled in his dark hair, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss until the world outside their embrace ceased to exist.
They lingered in the quiet room, listening to the surf break against the rocks far below. When they finally parted, both flushed and unsteady, the blue gem on her finger caught the terrace lights through the curved glass. Orenzo smoothed a stray strand of hair from her face, his gaze tender, adoring. “Welcome home, my wife.”
Just then, the door to the Master Suite burst open. Timo stood in the doorway, mud streaking his face and clothes, his bright eyes wide with mischievous delight. Cradled awkwardly in his arms, half-dragging on the floor, was a massive, shaggy golden retriever puppy, its tail wagging so hard its whole body wiggled. It barked, a joyous, surprisingly deep sound for such a young creature.
“Zesara! Orenzo!” Timo exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear, his voice echoing in the grand room. “So, since we’re a real family now, can we keep him?”
