Chapter 39 of 50

Reginald's Shadowy Empire

810 words

Silence clung heavy, thick with the weight of Eleanor’s words. Dust motes danced in the slivers of morning light, oblivious to the shattered reality within the study. Serena didn't move. Her gaze, fixed on nothing, was distant, seeing horrors Eleanor had only just unveiled. Her hands, clenching and unclenching, were the only tremor. Eleanor watched her daughter, a ghost of her former self. Guilt, a raw, burning thing, clawed at her throat. She had harbored this truth for decades. "He... he destroyed them," Serena whispered, voice raw, barely audible. "And took me. A trophy." Alex finally stirred. His jaw was tight, eyes burning with a cold fury. He had spent the night digging, fueled by a premonition, a growing unease about the true scope of his father’s dealings. He had suspected the land acquisition, the patent theft. But the details Eleanor laid bare shifted the ground beneath their feet. Reginald wasn't just ruthless; he was a predator. "I found something," Alex said, his voice clipped. He rose, moving to his laptop set up on a side table. His fingers flew across the keyboard, the clicks sharp in the silence. Eleanor flinched. More darkness. Hadn't enough been exposed? His laptop screen glowed, a stark blue against the muted room. Spreadsheets, dense with figures, appeared. Corporate names, dates, transactions. Detailed spreadsheets unfurled, a dizzying array of numbers. Alex scrolled quickly, pointing with a determined finger. "Remember the Midas Touch? The medical device that launched Thorne Industries?" Serena lifted her head slowly, a flicker of something, perhaps grim recognition, in her eyes. It was a name her biological mother, Evelyn, had often mentioned in her salvaged journals. Alex zoomed in on a section. "Reginald didn't just 'acquire' it. He created a series of shell corporations. 'Phoenix Innovations,' 'Evergreen Holdings.' All registered offshore." He clicked, opening another document. "These companies, ostensibly independent, were receiving enormous 'consulting fees' and 'licensing royalties' from Thorne Industries. Starting almost immediately after the patent was secured." Eleanor leaned forward, her brow furrowed. She recognized some of the names, though their true purpose had always been obscured by Reginald’s impenetrable business jargon. "But Thorne Industries was thriving," she murmured. "The profits... they were immense." Alex nodded grimly. "Exactly. The public-facing company showed solid, if not spectacular, growth. But the *real* profits, the vast majority of the revenue generated by the Midas Touch, were being systematically diverted." He highlighted a column. "Look at these figures. Quarter after quarter, year after year. Millions. Siphoned off. These weren't legitimate costs. These were direct transfers, disguised as business expenses." Serena rose, her movements stiff, mechanical. She walked to the laptop, her breath catching as she scanned the columns. The numbers blurred, then sharpened into an horrifying pattern. Her eyes traced the flow of money. From Thorne Industries, through layers of shell corporations, eventually converging into accounts linked directly to Reginald’s personal holding companies.
