Chapter 28 of 50
Chapter 28: Father's Cold Calculation
831 words
Dust motes danced in the afternoon light, illuminating the ancient, heavy air of Reginald Caldwell’s study. Elara pushed another stack of ledgers aside, her fingers gritty with the accumulated history of their family’s financial empire. Days blurred into a relentless, agonizing search for truth amidst his meticulously organized lies.
Liam watched her, leaning against the doorframe, a mug of cold coffee forgotten in his hand. His usual composure frayed at the edges, replaced by a deep-set weariness that mirrored her own. "Anything?" he asked, his voice rough.
Shaking her head, Elara rubbed her temples. "More corporate minutiae. Shell companies, overseas investments… nothing that screams 'stolen child'." She felt the frustration gnawing, a constant companion since Serena's devastating revelation.
Serena sat huddled in an armchair by the window, a blanket pulled tight around her. Her gaze was fixed on something far beyond the manicured gardens, lost in a private, silent hell. They hadn't seen her truly smile since that night.
"He wouldn't leave a paper trail that obvious," Liam mused, pushing off the frame. "Father was too shrewd." He crossed the room, picking up a heavy, leather-bound journal Elara had discarded.
Flipping through the brittle pages, Liam paused. "These aren't ledgers. Personal notes? Dates... names..." He squinted at the elegant script, a cold knot tightening in his stomach.
Elara moved swiftly, dropping beside him. Her breath hitched. The journal entries weren't financial; they were coded references to "Project Chimera" and "Asset Blue." Dates coincided chillingly with the Thorne family’s disappearance.
"Chimera," Elara whispered, the word tasting like ash. "A mythical creature, a hybrid. Something… made." Her eyes met Liam's, wide with dawning horror.
Liam's jaw tightened. "Asset Blue... Serena." The implication hung heavy, suffocating. Their father hadn't just adopted a child; he had acquired one.
More pages detailed meetings with an "intermediary" and "legal counsel, off-book." No mention of adoption agencies, no usual procedures. Just a cold, calculated transaction.
Serena stirred, sensing the shift in the room's atmosphere. Her eyes, haunted and hollow, finally focused on them. "What did you find?" Her voice was a fragile whisper.
Liam handed her the journal, his hand trembling slightly. "It seems… Father orchestrated everything. From the beginning."
Fingers tracing the damning script, Serena’s breath came in ragged gasps. Each word was a fresh wound, confirming the deepest fears she’d tried to suppress. "He bought me."
Elara felt a sudden, desperate urge to throw something. The pristine order of the study, the very air, felt complicit. "It's worse. Look at these dates. The Thorne family vanished weeks before you appeared in their lives."
"Vanished?" Serena repeated, a chilling tremor in her voice. "Not just… lost." Her hands clenched, the journal crinkling.
Liam ran a hand through his hair, his earlier defense of their father crumbling to dust. "He wasn't just filling a void, Serena. He was filling a vacancy for an heir."
Anger, raw and untamed, flared in Serena's eyes. She pushed herself up, the blanket falling away. "An heir? I was a pawn in his sick game."
Elara, however, was still searching. Her gaze fell on a hidden compartment behind a loose panel in the mahogany desk. Reginald’s secrets were always layered.
Prying it open, she found a small, velvet-lined box. Inside, not jewels, but a few faded photographs and a thick envelope, addressed in Reginald’s distinctive hand to Eleanor. "Mother," she murmured.
Liam moved closer, a new wave of apprehension washing over him. "What is it?" He watched Elara's fingers, almost afraid of what she might pull out.
Pulling out a letter, Elara saw Eleanor’s name scrolled across the front. The paper was thin, fragile, the ink slightly faded. It felt heavy with unspoken truths.
Serena stood frozen, watching, a morbid fascination drawing her in. Her breath hitched, anticipating another blow, another twist of the knife.
Elara unfolded the letter, her eyes scanning the familiar, precise handwriting. Her heart sank with each word, a cold dread spreading through her veins. Eleanor’s complicity, or coercion, became painfully clear.
"What does it say?" Liam urged, his voice barely audible. He reached out, as if to take the letter, then hesitated, his hand hovering.
Reading aloud, Elara’s voice trembled. " 'Eleanor, my dear, I understand your reservations. But we've discussed this extensively. Our position demands a certain pragmatism.' "
She paused, her gaze flicking to Serena, then back to the letter. A sickening wave of understanding crashed over her. " 'The child needed a home, and we needed an heir. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement.' "
