Chapter 26: Fallout and Betrayal
978 words
Gasped, Elara stumbled back from the chest, hands flying to her mouth. Pages, brittle with age, fluttered to the floor like ash. Liam, eyes still glued to the adoption certificate, felt a cold dread seep into his bones, colder than the cellar air.
"No," Liam whispered, voice thin. Shook his head, a slow, disbelieving motion. "This... this is a mistake. A lie."
Elara’s breath hitched, a ragged sound. "Liam, the handwriting. Mother's. Look at the date." Pointed a shaking finger at the faded ink.
Her gaze swept over the names: Vance, Thorne, Genevieve. A stolen life. A manufactured sister. Everything they knew, utterly fabricated.
Liam snatched up the adoption papers, crushing them slightly in his grasp. "Our parents wouldn't. They couldn't." His voice cracked, a raw edge of panic.
Felt a wave of nausea wash over Elara. Her parents. The pillars of their world. How could they have built their family on such a monstrous deception?
"The note," Elara managed, her throat tight. "It says... 'forgive us for what we took'."
Saw the color drain from Liam's face. He looked at the words again, then at the adoption certificate. A cold, hard truth settled between them.
"Serena," Liam breathed, her name a foreign sound on his tongue. "She... she isn't Serena."
A profound silence descended, thick with the weight of their discovery. Dust motes danced in a single shaft of light from a high window, oblivious to the shattering world below.
Stood rooted, neither sibling moving, both reeling. Their sister, their confidante, a stranger. A victim.
"We have to tell her," Elara said, her voice barely audible.
Liam winced, a flicker of pain in his eyes. "Tell her what? That our entire family is a lie? That her identity was stolen?" He ran a hand through his hair, agitated.
Considered the implications. Serena, living a life that wasn't hers, unknowingly. The sheer cruelty of it.
"She deserves to know," Elara insisted, stepping closer, her resolve hardening through the shock. "Even if it destroys everything."
"It *will* destroy everything," Liam countered, his voice sharp. "Her. Us. Everything." He paced a tight circle in the cramped space.
Felt the tremor in her own hands. How did one deliver such a blow? How did one recover from it?
"She needs to hear it from us, Liam," Elara urged. "Before someone else does. Before she finds out some other way."
Hesitated, Liam’s shoulders slumped. He looked defeated. "Alright. But how do we even begin?"
Footsteps echoed from upstairs, light and quick. Serena. Her familiar stride, a sound that now carried a sinister undertone.
Froze, both Elara and Liam. Their eyes met, a desperate plea for a unified front in their shared terror.
"Elara? Liam? What are you doing down here?" Serena's voice drifted down the stairwell, cheerful, oblivious.
Swallowed hard, Elara. "We... we found something."
Came Serena, into the dimness, a curious tilt to her head. A smile played on her lips. "Found what? The family skeletons?" She laughed, a light, airy sound that grated on Elara's nerves.
Liam held out the crumpled papers, his hand shaking. His jaw was tight. "Serena, you need to see this."
Frowned, Serena, her smile fading. Her gaze fell to the documents. Confusion clouded her features.
"What is this? Adoption papers?"
Her eyes scanned the bold print, then darted to Liam’s grim face, then to Elara’s pale one. A knot of unease began to form in her stomach.
"Genevieve Thorne?" Serena read aloud, a question in her tone. "Who... who is Genevieve Thorne?"
Elara took a step forward, her voice raw with an emotion she couldn't name. "Serena, listen carefully. This... this isn't easy."
Looked from one sibling to the other, her brow furrowing. A cold tendril of fear snaked through her.
"What are you talking about? What's going on?"
Liam swallowed, his voice tight. "Serena, our parents... they adopted you."
A stunned silence. Serena’s eyes widened, disbelief warring with a dawning horror. Her lips parted, but no sound emerged.
"But... no. That's impossible," she finally choked out. "I'm their daughter. I'm Serena Vance."
Elara stepped closer, extending a hand, then pulling it back. "We found a note. From Mother. It confirms it."
Her world tilted. Serena snatched the documents from Liam’s slackened grip. Her fingers fumbled, tracing the names, the dates. Genevieve Thorne. Born three years before Serena Vance. A different set of parents listed.
"No, this is a joke," Serena whispered, the blood draining from her face. "A sick, twisted joke." Her gaze flew between them, searching for any sign of a prank.
Saw only sorrow and grim certainty in their eyes. Her chest tightened, a searing pain blooming within her.
"What does this mean?" she demanded, her voice rising, verging on hysteria. "What in God's name does this mean?"
Liam reached out, a hesitant gesture. "Serena, we think... we think your identity was taken. That *you* are Genevieve Thorne."
Reeled, Serena, as if physically struck. The words echoed, hollow and terrifying. Her identity. Stolen. Her life. A fabrication.
"No!" she screamed, a raw, primal sound that ripped through the cellar's silence. The papers fluttered from her grasp, unheeded. "You're lying! You're both lying!"
Tears welled in her eyes, hot and furious. A betrayal so profound, it stole her breath.
"Why would you do this?" she shrieked, backing away, her hands pressed to her ears as if to block out their monstrous words. "To hurt me? To get rid of me?"
Elara shook her head vehemently. "Serena, no. We just found out ourselves. Minutes ago."
Liam stepped forward, his voice a desperate plea. "We wouldn't do this to you. We're as shocked as you are."
Looked at them, Serena, her face a mask of utter devastation. Her gaze, once loving, now held a fierce, wounded accusation.
"Our parents," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper, yet infused with venom. "They did this? They stole a child? And gave her *my* life?"
The sheer magnitude of the deception crashed down on her. Every memory, every childhood story, every shared laugh with her parents — tainted, twisted, false.
"Why?" she cried, her voice cracking. "Why would they do that to me? To *her*? Who was Genevieve Thorne?"
Wrecked, Elara felt. The pain in Serena's eyes was a physical blow. But how to explain a horror they barely understood themselves?
"We don't know the full story yet," Elara said, her voice trembling. "Only what's in these papers." She gestured vaguely to the scattered documents.
Serena stumbled, clutching her stomach as if she might vomit. Her beautiful, composed features twisted with grief and rage.
"You knew them," she accused, pointing a shaking finger at Liam, then Elara. "You lived with them. You saw them every day."
Liam flinched, his jaw hardening. "We *are* their children, Serena. We believed everything they told us too."
"Believed?" Serena’s voice was a ragged sob. "Or pretended not to see? How could you not see this?"
Her eyes, wild and bloodshot, raked over their faces. She searched for complicity, for any hint of a secret shared.
"It's a secret hidden for decades," Elara said, her voice strained. "We just found it. In that chest. This very hour."
Drew in a shuddering breath, Serena, her entire body trembling. Her vision blurred with tears, making Elara and Liam seem like monstrous shadows.
"My entire life," she whispered, a broken sound. "Everything. A lie."
The weight of it was suffocating. She felt untethered, floating in a void where nothing was real.
"Who am I?" she asked, her voice cracking, barely audible. "If I’m not Serena Vance, who am I?"
Liam took a step closer, his hand reaching out again, hesitant. "You're still you, Serena. Just... with a different past."
Jerked away, Serena, recoiling as if from a viper. The idea that Liam could offer comfort now was abhorrent.
"Don't touch me," she spat, her voice laced with the bitter taste of betrayal. "Don't you dare."
Her eyes, raw and wounded, locked onto Elara’s, then Liam’s. A cold, piercing question hung in the air between them.
"Did you know?" Serena whispered, her voice trembling, dangerously quiet. "Did you suspect I was the lie?"
