Chapter 1 of 10

The Taste of Infinity

1.1k words

The stench of rust and spent reagents clawed at Rhysik’s throat, a familiar poison in the air of Zalosk’s underbelly. His ribs screamed, each labored breath a fresh spike of agony. He tasted iron and the grime of the alley floor. Above him, the hulking silhouette of an enforcer blotted out the flickering glow from a distant refinery chimney. An iron-shod boot pressed down on Rhysik’s chest, grinding bone. “Thought you could snatch a vial, slum-rat?” The enforcer spoke with flat malice. “This isn’t some back-alley swill. This draught costs more than your entire district earns in a cycle.” Rhysik coughed, a wet rattle in his chest. His hand, even in his daze, instinctively clenched around the dented tin flask he’d cradled. It was empty. The precious, iridescent fluid, meant for Lena, had shattered on impact, spilling across the slick, oil-stained cobbles. “Please…” Rhysik forced the word out, a raw rasp. “My sister… Petrifying Blight.” The enforcer chuckled, a sound like gravel rolling in a drum. He leaned down, a glint of steel from his gauntlet catching the dim light. “Oh, the Blight, is it? Nasty business. But not *my* business. You steal from the Consortium, you pay. And you, boy, are paying with your life.” Another boot drove into Rhysik’s side, snapping ribs. He flopped onto his back, gasping as the wet bricks tilted in a crimson haze. A shadow loomed, followed by a sharp snap. The man held up a smaller, intact phial, its contents a vibrant azure that pulsed faintly in the dark. He tore the wax seal free with a sharp jerk. “Such a waste, this stuff,” the man mused, tilting the glass. “But I suppose even a dead rat can have a last drink.” The cold, viscous liquid splashed over Rhysik’s face, stinging his eyes. It mingled with the alchemical runoff already pooling around him – a noxious cocktail of lead-tainted water, spent catalyst dust, and traces of corrosive solvents. Some of it seeped into his mouth, a bitter, metallic taste that immediately clawed at his throat. His muscles locked, convulsing as the draught, now mixed with industrial sludge, ignited his throat like lye. The enforcer watched him writhe, mouth twisted in disgust. “Enjoy your ‘cure,’ slum-rat. It’s the last thing you’ll ever taste.” He flung the empty glass into scrap metal with a clang, turning on his heel. Heavy treads crunched into the fog. Rhysik’s sight narrowed to a pinprick. His lungs burned, his blood felt like acid. This wasn’t how it was supposed to end. Not like this. Lena needed him. He couldn’t… He couldn’t leave her. The thought was a desperate, primal scream in his dying mind. Then, as his senses frayed, cold runes manifested in the dark. It wasn't a hallucination. It was real. [Metabolic Cascade Protocol Activated] [Subject: Rhysik Volkov] [Condition: Severe multi-systemic trauma, acute alchemical poisoning, imminent cellular collapse.] [Commencing Cascade Protocol. Analyzing ingested compounds…] Rhysik’s unblinking gaze fixed on the text. His body was failing, yet his mind stayed cold. Through the caustic burn in his veins, a low hum vibrated deep inside his marrow. [Compound detected: Fortifying Draught (Grade 3)] [Effect: Temporary +5 Body, +3 Vigor, +1 Resilience (Duration: 30 minutes)] [Compound detected: Industrial Runoff (Varied toxic elements)] [Effect: Temporary -10 Body, -5 Vigor, -2 Resilience, +1 Toxin Resistance (Duration: 1 hour)] [Initiating Assimilation Sequence…] Rhysik’s entire being thrummed. The burning sensation intensified, but it wasn't just pain. It was… change. A rapid, violent restructuring at a cellular level. His muscles spasmed, his bones creaked, but he wasn’t dying anymore. He was transforming. [Stacking: Fortifying Draught (Grade 3)] [Permanent Bonus: +0.05 Body, +0.03 Vigor, +0.01 Resilience] [Stacking: Industrial Runoff (Toxic Elements)] [Permanent Bonus: +0.001 Toxin Resistance (Negating current detrimental effects through rapid cellular shift)] The numbers flickered across the dark, each decimal point cementing permanent change. Toxins in his blood neutralized and curdled into raw fuel. The swallowed draught settled into bone and sinew. The sludge had not rotted him; it had been harvested. [Assimilation complete. Current Cumulative Bonuses: Body: +0.05, Vigor: +0.03, Resilience: +0.01, Toxin Resistance: +0.001] [Interface monitors for additional consumable matter.] Rhysik pushed himself up, his muscles aching but responding with an unnatural vigor. The pain was still there, a dull throb, but beneath it, a nascent strength coiled. He took a deep, shuddering breath. The air, still acrid, no longer felt quite so suffocating. The soot-stained walls sharpened into crisp, distinct edges. He stood, swaying slightly, the world tilting. His hands, still caked in grime and dried blood, felt… different. Stronger. He stared at them, flexing his fingers. The metallic taste in his mouth had faded, replaced by a lingering, almost sweet aftertaste of raw power. Then, a tiny scuffling sound. From a crack in the wall, a small, grey form scurried out. It was a rat, but this one was larger than most, with intelligent, beady eyes. It regarded Rhysik with a mixture of fear and awe. “They really beat you, didn’t they?” the rat squeaked, its voice surprisingly clear, though high-pitched and raspy. “Left you for dead. Not even a glance back.” Rhysik froze. He hadn’t heard a rat talk before. He hadn’t heard *anything* talk before, except humans. His sharpened hearing caught every rasp in the creature’s high voice. “You… you can speak?” Rhysik managed, his own voice a low, gravelly rasp. The rat scurried closer, its nose twitching. “Course I can speak. Name’s Mishka. And I saw it all, human. Nasty business, that. Pouring good tonics into the mud, then the rest down your gullet like you were nothing. Then that pale glow in your eyes. Never seen anything like it.” Mishka hopped onto a discarded crate, closer to Rhysik’s face. Its eyes were wide, darting between Rhysik and the dark alley entrance. “You’re lucky to be alive. Unnaturally lucky, actually. Like you just swallowed a whole chemist's rack.” Rhysik felt a cold prickle of paranoia. Mishka had seen. Mishka knew. How much did this rat understand? “What are you talking about, ‘the System’?” Rhysik demanded, his voice gaining strength. “The pale light behind your pupils, obviously!” Mishka chittered impatiently. “And that brute Kaelan… he’ll be furious when he realizes what he left behind.” Mishka edged closer, whiskers twitching against Rhysik’s shredded hem. “They’re coming back for the body… and the vial.”
