Chapter 7 of 10

Symphony of a Shattered Forge

1.0k words

Lord Kallas stood opposite Jari on the obsidian flagstones, his massive, three-tiered anvil etched with a scarlet talon that hummed with dark energy. “A peasant’s mallet for a peasant’s hand,” Kallas sneered, gesturing toward Jari’s scarred iron tool. “Let’s see if it can even dent the air I breathe.” Jari merely offered his usual goofy grin, a wide, innocent display that made Eino Rautio, watching from the antechamber, grit his teeth in a mixture of frustration and nascent admiration. Sirkka Kallio, seated among the clan elders, watched Jari with an intensity that belied her composed demeanor. Kallas’s hammer fell in strict, practiced cadences. He plucked raw Runic-steel from a nearby trough, its outer crust a dull grey, and drove his heavy iron into the center. Sparks showered the stone. The slag flaked away to expose brilliant silver that hummed with concentrated force, coaxing the very soul from the ore through practiced sorcery. Jari, meanwhile, seemed to be inspecting his own chosen materials: a small pile of unassuming mineral shards, each no larger than his thumb. He picked up a deep violet prism, its facets catching the arena’s artificial sunlight. He brought it to his mouth, then, to the horror of the audience, simply bit into it. A soft *crunch* echoed through the suddenly quiet arena. A collective gasp rippled through the stands. Kallas paused mid-swing, his brow furrowing in disgust. “Is this a joke, boy? Are you mocking the sacred rites of the forge?” Jari chewed thoughtfully, his eyes half-closed in bliss. “Hmm, a bit tart, but the mineral structure is delightful,” he mumbled, then swallowed with a loud gulp. A faint violet aura briefly enveloped him, then vanished. [Soul-Core capacity increased by 0.5%] [Essence of Veilstone assimilated. Minor spiritual resistance gained.] Kallas snorted and swung again, refusing to entertain the distraction. He threaded copper filaments through the steel, binding a captured tempest-spirit into the core until bright volts skittered across the cooling metal. The plates curved into an armored glove, sleek and heavy, engineered to channel ruinous force. Jari continued his bizarre feast. A shard of luminous green glass, tasting like “fresh-cut grass and pure mana,” boosted his regeneration. A sliver of obsidian, “rich and earthy,” strengthened his physical frame. His soul-core, hidden from all but the Warden and the [System], expanded with terrifying speed. His body thrummed with a low, growing vibration. Eino watched, transfixed. He had expected Jari to use some clever trick, not… *this*. It was utterly ridiculous, yet Jari’s eyes, even behind the goofy smile, held a fierce, unyielding focus that made Eino feel a chill. Across the ring, Kallas finished quenching his piece. The armored sleeve, titled the ‘Sanguine Maw,’ pulsed with suppressed force along dark joints inscribed with ancient runes. “Observe, you fool!” Kallas bellowed, raising the finished war-glove, its internal storm-spirit crackling with blue-white glare. “This is true power! This is what your gluttonous parlor tricks can never achieve!” Jari, mid-bite of a particularly vibrant ruby pebble, paused. His vision swam. The air around him felt thick, charged. A strange, almost painful pressure built within his chest, like a forge on the verge of exploding. His grin faltered, replaced by a momentary flash of alarm. [Satiation at 75%. Flavor profile is becoming... unstable.] [Warning: Excessive consumption detected. System integrity compromised. Host power surge detected. Loss of control imminent.] Jari felt his soul-core *swell*, not with the familiar gentle expansion, but with a violent, uncontrolled burst. Raw spiritual energy, untamed and volatile, surged through his limbs. His vision blurred, the edges of the arena wavering. He felt a terrifying loss of control, a sudden, horrifying emptiness where his sharp intellect usually resided. It was as if his very being was becoming a conduit for a force too vast for him to contain. “A little… over-seasoned,” Jari muttered, his voice strained, a bead of sweat tracing a path down his temple. He stumbled back a step, clutching his chest. The half-eaten gem slipped from his fingers and clattered onto the stone, instantly dissolving into dust. Kallas took Jari’s stumble for surrender. “Collapse, dog! Before I shatter you!” He raised the Sanguine Maw, gathering a crackling sphere of pure discharge within the palm—the signature ‘Storm-Heart Implosion’ meant to erase a soul-core in one blow. “Prepare to be erased, boy!” Kallas roared, thrusting his arm forward. The thunderbolt tore across the obsidian flagstones, screaming toward Jari’s ribs. Jari stared at the approaching death, his mind racing through the haze of uncontrolled power. *Control. Focus. What do I have? What can I make?* He reached blindly into his trough and hauled out a rod of pale Soul-alloy, its metal cold and smooth. He didn’t try to purify it, or layer it, or infuse it. He simply, with a desperate, instinctual surge of will, struck it with his mallet. *Clink.* The strike produced an impossibly crisp ring, cutting straight through the roar of Kallas’s blast. The metal rod split into two prongs, vibrating white-hot as a pitch-fork that conducted pure acoustic resonance. The chime met the screaming tempest-ball without resistance. Instead, it aligned with the metallurgical grain of the Sanguine Maw, seeking out micro-fractures along Kallas’s hasty welds until the ball of thunder lost cohesion and dispersed. Then the twin tines hummed louder, shivering the air and rattling the sternums of the spectators. In that absolute acoustic clarity, Kallas’s war-glove met its end. A web of fractures traced along the Sanguine Maw’s knuckles. Trapped storm-current flared once and went cold. With a sound like crushing gravel, the metal shattered, raining grey powder over Kallas’s bare fingers as his jaw slackened in shock. The chime pressed onward into the forge-master himself, locating every dissonant fracture inside Kallas’s core. Spasms seized the warlord’s jaw. He fell back a step, grasping at his collar as his spirit strained against the pitch and gave way. Kallas dropped face-first onto the obsidian slabs, limp and emptied of presence. Shouts shook the tiered benches. Jari dropped the iron fork, his cheerful expression gone as his knees struck the floor. The surge of power, the terrifying instability, had taken its toll. He clutched his own chest, a searing pain blossoming there, as if his own soul-core was tearing itself apart. [Reciprocity Protocol... initiated.]
