Chapter 9 of 10

Threading the Needle

638 words

The bronze arachnid descended, its brass limbs scuttling, multifaceted optics locked onto Nizari. Cold sweat pricked Nizari's collar. This was neither mortal craft nor the machinations of corrupt nobility, but an intrusion from beyond the known terraces of Qarhan. `[TRUE HEIR DETECTED. POTENTIAL HOST COMPATIBILITY: 99.8%.]` The chime was a resonant vibration that seemed to bypass her ears, settling directly into the marrow of her bones. `[INITIATING PARASITIC BONDING PROTOCOL.]` Pressure mounted against Nizari's ribs as the automaton lunged, copper mandibles snapping toward her sternum. She kept her feet set, tracking the arc; swift as it moved, each hinge pivoted on an unvarying angle. `[REJECTION IS FUTILE. ACCEPTANCE GRANTS UNRIVALLED COSMIC POWER. ABSOLUTE RULE OVER QARHAN. REALITY WILL BEND TO YOUR WILL.]` The offer was a siren song, a whisper of dominion, promising everything her stolen birthright had denied. For a fleeting heartbeat, the grind of past trials and the exhausting vigilance against a world eager to discard her tempted her to yield. But the thought curdled. To accept such a gift was to surrender, to trade one master for another. It was to become dependent, beholden to an alien will. Her blood, the true blood of the Volkan lineage, thrummed with a different kind of power, one earned through endurance and craft, not given. She had vowed to reclaim her life on her own terms, without spilling blood, and certainly without bowing to a cosmic parasite. Nizari set her footing. "I do not need stolen power," she said into the locked silence of the pavilion. She glanced toward the Loom of Bones, its raw warp cords, radiant with residual azure dye, still drawn taut. Her calloused fingers snatched at the loom frame, ripping free a hank of radiant azure cord charged with ley-line warmth. As the construct closed the distance, she shifted her weight, tracking its joints like crossed warp and weft. She cast the luminous cords in a figure-eight loop around its forelegs. The construct screeched as the azure strands caught the burnished bronze hinges, searing into the metal. Nizari braced her heels, drawing the lines tight until the joints locked against the tension. `[HOST REJECTION DETECTED. COUNTERMEASURES INITIATED. PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION CORRUPTION…]` The construct pitched violently, copper sparks showering the flagstones as it fought the tensile snare. Along the dais, Hesna's silhouette shifted; the guard's pupils tracked the automaton, a pulse throbbing at her temple. Hesna strained against the stillness, snapping the unseen resistance with an audible intake of air. Her right hand drew a weighted combat blade from her inner sash and threw it without pause, the steel flashing across the court. The point sank home into the crystalline prism set in the automaton's thorax. An ear-splitting screech split the air as the casing cracked open. "Now, Nizari!" Hesna shouted against the creature's din. "Finish it!" Heat surged from the stones through Nizari's soles, flooding the cords in her grip. The azure strands stiffened into taut conduits of bedrock force. Nizari heaved back. The cords bit into the cracked core, shearing internal cogs and snapping iron struts. A harsh screech sounded as the housing crushed inward, spilling sulfurous smoke. The chassis ruptured, scattering inert bronze fragments across the tiles. Instant motion returned: the fallen chandelier crashed onto the dais with a deafening rattle of brass and glass, and the onlookers stumbled forward in an uproar of gasps and shouts. Nizari stood among the shards, singed cords slack in her blistered palms. She turned toward Melyan. Stripped of the entity's borrowed vigor, her stepsister's frame withered instantly. Not into a faint, or a collapse, but into a pile of fine, pale dust that scattered instantly on the wind, leaving only the bare outline of her final, terrified stance. The silk veil she had often worn fluttered briefly, then fell, landing softly on the terrace, utterly empty.
