Chapter 8 of 10
Calculated Slaughter

From the highest timber platform, Shen Yutang tracked the Ironscale Legion's approach. Her breath plumed white against cold schist. She tracked columns not as living men, but as directional vectors and load distributions against the quarry threshold. Below, Wei Zongyuan stood at the Twin Serpent Gates, the obsidian gleam of his armor a stark contrast to the rough-spun tunics of the freed laborers now manning the outer perimeter. His greatsword rested against his plate, balance tipped forward on the grip.
“The lead elements march in a standard four-column assault formation,” Yutang’s voice carried over the murmurs of the wind, amplified by a simple acoustic funnel she’d fashioned. It reached the ears of her lieutenants in the towers and Wei below. “Their center of mass will converge on the eastern gate’s primary support points. They anticipate a static defense.” A faint smile, devoid of mirth, touched her lips. “We shall disabuse them of that notion.”
High on the western ridge, Jiao watched from the saddle of a roan stallion. He expected the usual desperate scramble, the panicked pleas of the condemned. Instead, the Mud-Swallow Hold remained silent, a hulking shadow against the brightening sky, its crude walls now reinforced with interlocking timbers and sloped earthworks that defied traditional siege ladders. “They are defiant,” he mused, a cruel twist to his mouth. “Let them taste the Ironscale’s might. Ramming platoons, march! Clear the path for the siege engines!”
The first wave of soldiers, clad in bronze plate and wielding heavy rams, charged forward. Their war cries ripped through the air, a cacophony of assumed victory. They aimed for the Twin Serpent Gates, believing the weathered wood would splinter under their concerted force. But as they neared the outer perimeter, the ground beneath them began to shift.
“Geyser Veins, release Sequence Gamma-7,” Yutang articulated, her eyes tracking the lead ram. On the battlements, a series of counterweights shifted, levers were thrown. With a groan of ancient mechanisms, concealed channels opened on the valley floor. Water, stored for days in underground reservoirs and pressurized by the ingenious gravity-fed systems, erupted upwards in powerful jets. The fine silt and loose earth, churned by marching boots, instantly transformed into a slick, viscous Sunder-Bog.
Men screamed as their feet lost purchase. The disciplined ranks dissolved into a floundering mass. Their heavy armor, once a protection, became a leaden trap. The rams, designed for horizontal force, plunged uselessly into the mire. Wei Zongyuan stood motionless while the forward columns foundered. Only a few, lighter-armored scouts managed to maintain their footing, scrambling towards the outer walls.
“Maintain Geyser Veins for sixty breaths,” Yutang instructed. “Archers, focused volley on the flanks. Eliminate any who attempt to skirt the mire.”
Arrows rained down, not from a single point, but from staggered positions along the walls, their trajectory arcs plotted with lethal precision, catching those attempting to escape the Sunder-Bog’s grip. Wei, seeing a group of particularly agile skirmishers nearing his position, moved with the suddenness of a striking viper. Fang-Breaker sang through the air, a blur of polished steel. A skirmisher’s head flew from his shoulders, his body crumpling before he could even register the blow. Another, attempting to leap over a submerged trench, was bisected mid-air. Wei’s movements were economical, brutal, a dance of pure annihilation. He positioned himself square between the breach line and the inner stairs.
Jiao bared his teeth. “What sorcery is this? Withdraw the vanguard! Send in the grappling companies! Scale those infernal slopes!”
The next wave, lighter and more agile, carried grappling hooks and scaling ladders. They moved with greater caution, picking their way through the fringes of the Sunder-Bog. Yutang, from her vantage, tracked their ascent patterns. “Concentrated mass detected at ascension points Alpha-3 and Beta-5,” she observed. “Stone-Fist Drops, initiate Release Protocol Sigma-9.”
High above, immense stone blocks, held by intricate rope and pulley systems, were released. These were not simply dropped; they were swung outwards on massive arms, designed to gain momentum and impact the sloped walls at a precise angle, transferring their kinetic energy laterally. The first Stone-Fist Drop slammed into ascension point Alpha-3. A sickening crunch echoed through the canyon as men, ladders, and grappling hooks were swept away by the crushing impact, flung like discarded dolls down the earthen slope. The second followed, clearing Beta-5 with similar devastating efficiency.
The invading host, trained for open plains and flat fortifications, found its playbook worthless. Their tactics, refined on flat battlefields and against conventional fortifications, were useless against Yutang’s dynamic defenses. Siege towers, painstakingly assembled, found no purchase on the treacherous, mire-filled ground. Battering rams were bogged down. Scaling parties were annihilated by swinging stone masses and precisely aimed volleys.
Hours passed, marked by the rising sun and the increasing desperation of the attacking forces. The valley floor became a graveyard of broken armor and shattered pride. Wei Zongyuan, his armor stained with grime and blood, stood unyielding at the gate. No enemy had breached the outer perimeter, let alone reached the inner walls. Yutang, though physically weary, showed no sign of faltering. Her mind remained a calculating engine, constantly assessing, adapting, optimizing the slaughter.
“They are retreating,” Yutang noted, watching the last vestiges of the scaling parties scramble back towards their main formation. “A temporary measure. The First Prince will not yield.”
Her prediction proved true. From the ridge, Jiao took in the stalled wreckage. “This… this is not warfare! It is a mockery!” He turned to his remaining officers, his voice low and dangerous. “Bring forth the ‘Sky-Thunder Device’. We will collapse the entire valley if we must. This witch and her stronghold will be erased from the earth.”
A murmur of apprehension ran through his officers. The Sky-Thunder Device was a monstrous contraption, a massive container of illicit black powder, outlawed by imperial decree for its indiscriminate destructive power. It was a weapon of last resort, capable of shattering mountains and leveling entire towns. To use it against a penal colony was an act of pure, unbridled desperation, an open declaration of contempt for any law or moral restraint.
“Commanding Lord, here?” an adjutant asked.
Jiao leveled an unblinking stare at the man. “Certainty belongs to scholars. Victory belongs to rulers. Bring it forward. Now.”
