The Immortal Loop

“[WARNING: Planar Rift Stability – CRITICAL!]”
“[Immense Karmic Weight Required for Permanent Sealing.]”
“[Solution: A Living Soul of Extraordinary Resonance Must Be Permanently Cast into the Abyssal Maw to Act as the Final Keystone.]”
The interlocking circles of light, streaked with silver and violet, faded into the swirling gloom above the Maw. Gyalpo’s stone ribs groaned as the tether held, the broad back listing over the empty pit. Pemba clutched a steaming tin mug with both hands, tea splashing over his knuckles as he stared from the trench to Tashin at the timbered brink.
“No, no, no!” Pemba stammered, his voice a frantic squeak. “Not a *living* soul! It can’t be! We just… we just plugged it, didn’t we? Like a cork in a bottle! There has to be another way! A really big cork!” He gestured wildly with his free hand, nearly spilling his tea. “Or maybe… maybe one of those… those reanimated Druk-Vajra bits? A finger, perhaps? Not you, Tashin! Never you!”
Khandro phased through the planking beside Tashin, his blue vapor drifting thin against the gale. The assassin bowed, rising to face his master. “My lord, the script demands an end. But not yours. The monks offered their breath already. Their past merits run deep.”
Lhamo, the Head Monk, advanced across the salted timbers. “Khandro speaks truth, Tashin. Our lives are but whispers in the wind compared to the salvation of the world. We, the Last Monks of the Rinpoche, are ready to fulfill our vows. Let us be the keystone. Our souls are prepared for the Vayrachana’s final journey.” Several other monks murmured agreements, their hands pressed together in prayer, their eyes unwavering.
Tashin turned to them without haste. “Your courage is real, Lhamo. It would suffice, yet it stays unspent.” He looked past Pemba’s white knuckles, past Khandro’s translucent daggers, toward the frost-crusted hibernation vault bolted behind the wheelhouse. “I drew the diagrams for this ruin. The anchor belongs to me.”
Pemba dropped his cup, hot liquid splattering across his boots. “No! Tashin! Who brews the morning pot? Who breaks the lock on the pod? You swore an oath!” He lunged toward the ledge, but Khandro slid between them, cold mist pressing Pemba back onto the deck.
Tashin lifted an open palm. “The leaves will steep. The oath holds.” He inclined his head toward Khandro. “Guard them.”
Tashin stepped off the rim. His hem snapped once in the updraft, and then the dark gorge swallowed him whole.
Pemba struck the timber with both fists. “You fool! You stubborn, tea-drinking lunatic!”
Khandro’s vapor frayed into wisps. Lhamo fell to his knees beside the balustrade, wooden prayer beads clacking in rapid unison.
[WARNING: A Soul of Unprecedented Karmic Paradox Has Entered the Abyssal Maw!]
[Immortal Loop Detected!]
[System Anomaly: Soul-Binding to Undead Titan Gyalpo – Active!]
[Damage-Sharing Network – Active!]
[Respawn Protocol – Initiated!]
Auric fire ignited overhead, splitting across the cloud cover. A ring of geometric script fractured, multiplying by dozens every second, mirrors of interlocking lines refracting until the gray sky turned entirely amber.
Behind them, light spilled through the slats of the roof cabin. Pemba rubbed his soot-stained sleeve across his nose. “What is that noise?”
Khandro, his spectral form now vibrating with a strange energy, turned abruptly towards the cabin. “My lord… he is…”
Before he could finish, a familiar, calm voice drifted from the cabin door. “Pemba, my friend, could you pass me a fresh cup? This respawn always leaves me a little parched.”
Pemba’s head snapped up. Tashin stood in the doorway of his humble cabin, adjusting the collar of his slightly rumpled robe, a perfectly serene expression on his face. He looked utterly unharmed, completely at peace, as if he had just woken from a pleasant nap. Not a single drop of darkness clung to him from his plunge into the Maw.
“You—” Pemba scrambled backward against a coil of rope. “You leaped over the rail! Straight down the throat! How are your boots on this floor?” He thrust a finger toward the cabin, then toward the shuddering trench.
Tashin adjusted his sleeves. “The link to Gyalpo routes fatal trauma directly into our shared marrow, then clears the register. A closed circuit. The throat down there cannot process the feedback.”
[Planar Rift Stability – OVERLOADED!]
[Karmic Paradox – MAXED!]
[Abyssal Maw – INTERNAL COLLAPSE IMMINENT!]
Indeed, the Maw was no longer merely rumbling. It was *screaming*. The dark vortex began to writhe, twisting in on itself, struggling against an unseen pressure. The very air around it shimmered and warped, as if spacetime itself was being squeezed by an impossible force. Tendrils of pure black corruption, previously spewing forth, now recoiled violently, sucked back into the rapidly shrinking mouth. The endless cycle of Tashin’s sacrifice and instant resurrection was like a cosmic indigestion, choking the ultimate predator from the inside.
“[Abyssal Maw – ANNIHILATED!]”
“[Planetary Rift – SEALED PERMANENTLY!]”
“[Karmic Resonance – COMPLETE!]”
A crack like snapping crystal echoed across the cliffs. The skyward rings shattered into dry sparks, drifting down across the planks like brass snow before dissolving against the grain.
A stray spark settled against the iron hatch of the cryo-vault. Counterweights groaned, tumblers disengaged with a dull clank, and the thick portal hissed outward on pressurized hinges, unsealing the frosted glass casket inside.
Inside, a small, pale figure, a girl no older than eight, stirred. Her eyes fluttered open, blinking against the sudden light. She looked utterly bewildered, then caught sight of the tear-streaked face of the man staring into her pod. “Big brother?” she whispered, her voice reedy and weak.
Pemba lunged toward the open threshold. “Sarala!” He hooked his arms beneath her shoulders, hauling the girl out against his quilted jacket as she curled small fingers into his collar.
Lhamo bowed his head over his rosary. Khandro’s silhouette took on the dense grain of polished slate, phantom daggers sheathed at his hip.
“[The Gyalpo Sanctuary – Complete!]”
“[World Redeemed – Karmic Balance Restored!]”
The gale dropped. Slopes of gray permafrost below cracked open, dark soil and moss showing through the slush. Sunlight cut through the thinning cloud ceiling, warming the frostbitten rigging.
Gyalpo shifted its weight. Four pillar-like limbs ground against shale, steering along the ridge line. The blackened anchor cord drew smoothly into the carapace, melding back into necrotic bone.
Across the expanse of the titan’s shell, surviving families emerged from the hold into the sun. Pemba wrapped his dry sheepskin vest over Sarala’s shoulders, pointing out the snowmelt waterfalls cascading down the valley walls. Near the port railing, the Rinpoche monks stacked soil boxes for seed-tending.
Tashin stood by the rail with a clay kettle, tipping pale liquor into a cracked bowl. Steam scented with roasted barley drifted into the clean air. He held the vessel out toward Khandro, who received the warmth with lowered eyes.
Tashin tapped the kettle lid shut and set fresh water over the brazier, listening to the steady rhythm of Gyalpo’s stride carry the refuge across the mountains.
**The End.**
