Chapter 2 of 10

The Gilded Cage

The gunship’s interior was a study in austere functionality: padded benches, minimal windows, and an air that hummed with compressed power. Banyu slumped against the cool metal wall, his gaze fixed on Citra, who sat opposite him, clutching a worn fabric doll. Her chin stayed tucked against her collar, her attention flitting to Mahesa where he stood locked in parade rest beside the cockpit bulkhead. The rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* of the rotors was a physical presence, vibrating through the soles of Banyu’s boots, mirroring the frantic cadence beneath his ribs. Ninety days. The ribs over his sternum ached with every accelerated pump. He tapped Citra's knee twice with a knuckle, his face slack and unbothered. The flight was brief, descending through the smog-filtered light of the metropolis. The Suryatama Estate materialized beneath them: a fortress of obsidian-hued durasteel and sculpted concrete, sprawling across an entire district. Towers pierced the cloud layer, interconnected by sky-bridges that glowed with a faint, internal light. It wasn’t a home; it was a declaration of dominance. The gunship settled onto a vast landing pad, the blast doors of a hangar retracting with a groan of stressed metal. The air that rushed in was thick with the scent of ozone and the distant rumble of city traffic. Mahesa stepped down the ramp first. "Welcome to the Suryatama Estate, Heir Banyu." His voice was devoid of warmth, a stark contrast to the opulence about to unfold. "And to you, Lady Citra." He extended a hand towards Citra, a gesture she met with a hesitant glance at Banyu before taking it. Banyu followed, his worn farm clothes feeling suddenly coarse and alien against the backdrop of the sleek, polished surfaces. His yawn, deep and unapologetic, felt like a deliberate insult to the sterile grandeur. They were led through a labyrinth of hushed corridors, past automated security gates that hissed open and closed with precise efficiency. The walls were adorned with stark, abstract art, and the occasional display of ancient weaponry encased in shimmering force fields. Every step felt measured, every echo amplified. Eventually, they emerged into the Grand Atrium, a cavernous space bathed in the diffused light filtering through a massive domed skylight. It was less an entrance hall and more a corporate court. Below, a scattering of individuals in impeccably tailored attire paused their conversations, their gazes converging on Banyu. Whispers followed them like a rustling current. "Is that him? The mountain peasant?" "He actually *yawned*." "Look at his clothes. An absolute disgrace." Banyu offered another slow, deliberate yawn, stretching his arms above his head as if he’d just woken from a particularly satisfying nap. He could feel the judgment, sharp and cold, but it merely reinforced the mask he wore. Let them think him a bumpkin. It made his true intent easier to conceal. Before Mahesa could guide them past the central fountain, a man detached himself from the cluster of onlookers. He wore a tailored three-piece suit of polished jade weave, his dark hair lacquered back, moving with practiced martial carriage. He stopped before Banyu, a faint, condescending smile playing on his lips. "So, the lost lamb has finally stumbled home. I’d expected... something more. Perhaps a less fragrant aroma of livestock?" The man's dark irises lingered on Banyu's mud-stiffened tunic, then dropped to Citra, who tucked herself behind Banyu's elbow. "And a companion? How quaint. Did you bring your favorite goat as well?" Banyu didn't blink, letting his jaw hang slack. "Goat? No, just Citra. Who are you? Do you know where the beds are? This whole… city thing makes my neck stiff." He punctuated his sentence with another exaggerated yawn, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. The stranger's mouth flattened into a thin line, the cords along his jaw tightening under pale skin. Banyu’s feigned incompetence was infuriatingly effective. With a flourish, Raden produced a slender, ornate vial from his inner jacket pocket. It shimmered with a pale, opalescent liquid. "This," he announced, his voice ringing with theatrical gravitas, "is the Sovereign's Marrow. The Suryatama lineage’s ultimate biological enhancement. My birthright. My cure, upon my twenty-first cycle." He twirled the vial, letting the light catch its precious contents. Banyu squinted at it. "Is that… juice? I could use some juice. And maybe a nap." Banyu kept his chin tilted down, watching the sealed ampoule catch the glass overhead while his accelerated pulse drummed against his collarbone. That vial was his life, his sister’s future. And it was dangling, mockingly, just out of reach. Mahesa observed the exchange with unblinking intensity. He saw the way Banyu’s frame, despite the slouch, maintained an almost perfect, unconscious balance. The subtle tension in his shoulders, the stillness of his hands, even as he feigned disinterest. The man was a tightly coiled spring, presenting himself as a loose knot of twine. Mahesa filed the observation away, a new data point in the complex equation of the true heir. Raden, frustrated by Banyu’s lack of reaction, finally scoffed. "Take him to the designated quarters, Mahesa. And the girl... she'll be more comfortable in the Rianna Wing. It’s quite secure. For her protection, of course." Banyu’s languid posture instantly stiffened. "The Rianna Wing? She stays with me." His voice, for the first time, held an edge of steel that cut through the atrium’s murmurs. Mahesa’s cold gaze met Banyu’s. "Heir Raden’s command. It is protocol for new arrivals, especially those with… delicate conditions. The Rianna Wing offers dedicated facilities and personnel for Lady Citra’s comfort and safety." He gestured to two stoic guards who had materialized behind Citra. "They will escort her." Citra gripped his sleeve until the threads tore, her knuckles blanching against the rough fabric. The languid slouch vanished from Banyu's spine as his boot soles ground into the marble, his ribs locking tight over his roaring chest.
