Chapter 7 of 10

Sanctuary Breached

844 words

The volcanic shard, a jagged tooth of pure void, tore a screaming gash in reality. It peeled back the air, not like fabric, but like wet clay, revealing a churning abyss of iridescent oil-streaks. The tear bit directly into the hidden fold where Zou Yan had sheltered the outer laborers’ families, the discarded artifact spirits, and the three-legged jade toad. A wail of terror erupted from the gap, a chorus of startled children and chittering animal-forms. The haven, once a bastion of serene greenery, now hemorrhaged a torrent of panic and raw essence. Zou Yan planted his heels in the grit, lime dust flaking off his knuckles. The jade toad scrambled on its three stubby legs, shoving children behind broad lotus leaves while the void-rift stretched further, slurping at the pond mud. Baozi, perched on Zou Yan’s shoulder, let out a low, guttural growl, his clay body hardening into an unyielding shield. A faint crimson glow sparked from the pug's eyes, mirroring the jagged wedge at Zou Yan’s belt. “You thought to hide them, little mortar-mixer?” The patriarch sneered, even as the rough tool sparked erratically against the seams of space. “A pathetic attempt. All will fuel the ascent.” The rift swelled, its oily tendrils reaching into the lush pocket. Trees withered where its shadow fell, their leaves crumbling to ash. Zou Yan didn’t flinch. He shut his eyes, measuring corners, gaps, and lintels. This wasn’t a fight of fists and qi, but of pathways and boundaries. Twisting his fingers in the dirt, Zou Yan rerouted the threshold. The verdant path leading deeper into the haven suddenly looped back on itself, like a Möbius strip of reality. The void-rift, pushing forward, found itself coiling inward. The glassy barrier guarding a grotto of cowering families rotated on its axis, turning a hard facet to the advancing tear. A waterfall, its water once cascading downwards, began to flow sideways, creating a dizzying, disorienting vista that would make any attacker question their perception. The Patriarch’s probing attack, meant to rip through the sanctuary, instead found itself trapped in a Mobius-like fold, its destructive power turning back, threatening to consume the void-rift itself. The black splinter shrieked, struggling against its own reflected force. “What trickery is this?” The patriarch bared his teeth, his amusement vanishing into irritation. He shoved the implement harder, but the pocket realm warped, redirecting the shearing force into meaningless spirals until the void-rift wobbled, its edges fraying. As Zou Yan concentrated on weaving the sanctuary into an impenetrable labyrinth, a shadow detached itself from the smoke-wreathed walls of the volcanic chamber. Elder Luo Qixing lunged from the soot, baring his yellowed teeth. In his hand, a dull bronze dagger glinted, aimed at Zou Yan’s unprotected back. Reeking of pig slurry and ash, Luo dragged his twisted knee forward. He took advantage of Zou Yan’s divided attention. But Zou Yan was no longer the oblivious boy Luo had crippled. Before the bronze dagger could even reach its apex, Zou Yan turned his head slightly, his gaze locking onto the Elder. Zou Yan did not dodge. Instead, he gripped the intangible hinge of Luo Qixing’s private domain—the inner vault where the elder stored his hoarded treasures. With a silent, absolute command, Zou Yan *closed* it. Not just a physical door, but the very concept of access. The unseen hinges snapped shut, sealing Luo off from his internal sea of qi. A choked gasp tore from Elder Luo’s throat. His body spasmed violently, his eyes rolling back in his head. The bronze blade clattered against stone as Luo's core collapsed in on itself. He crumpled, a hollow husk, his meridians utterly severed. Luo writhed in the soot, clutching his withered chest—a discarded scrap, exactly like the apprentices he had maimed. “A waste,” the patriarch snarled, not bothering to look down at the convulsing elder. “A craven worm, utterly useless.” He had no patience for failure. His gaze snapped from Luo to the sputtering implement. An idea, cruel and decisive, sparked in his eyes. “Yet, even a worm can offer sustenance.” Before Luo could scramble away, the World-Breaker tool flared with an oily red glare. The patriarch drove the jagged shard straight into Luo’s breastbone. Luo’s scream was cut short, a wet, gurgling sound as his very essence, his collapsing soul, was violently ripped from his body. It coiled around the shard like black grease. The gorged implement swelled, and with a deafening *CRACK*, split open a void-rift far wider than the first. This was no mere tear, no mere portal. This was a yawning maw of pure vacuum, pulling air and fire into its gut. It materialized directly in the center of the volcano’s chamber, its gravitational pull immense and instantaneous. The massive walls of the Radiant Kiln Sect, the very stone of the hollow mountain, groaned and shuddered. Dust and debris rained down as massive chunks of igneous rock ripped free, spiraling into the abyss. The air screamed, compressed and distorted, as the entire volcano began to be devoured, slowly, inexorably, into the terrifying, unstable void.
