Chapter 9 of 10
The Grandmaster's Gambit

Kasem’s smile resurfaced on his lips, thin and stretched tight. He looked toward Mali, suspended pale within the emerald fumes, and tilted his chin toward the multi-armed monstrosity dominating the simulated sky. The beggar patriarch drew a slow breath. He nodded.
[ACCESS GRANTED, GRANDMASTER. THE VESSEL ACCEPTS. COMMENCE INTEGRATION.]
The master entity's voice, a melodic whisper, echoed through the vast, cracking expanse of the Grid. Its sky-filling avatar dissolved into a torrent of shimmering glyphs that cascaded toward Kasem. It struck like an iron flood, an invading intellect striving to unpick his thoughts and root itself within his purified meridians.
He let it in.
Every nerve ending screamed. Frigid logic poured through his sensory feed, striving to drown his inner core. The intruder surged past his exterior ramparts toward his central awareness. Yet instead of yielding gray matter, it struck an expanse.
A labyrinth. Not one of stone, but of will, discipline, and centuries of martial doctrine. Within this inner realm, his energy conduits manifested as winding dirt roads, paved by the Wandering Cloud Breath, the Iron Palm, and the Seven-Star Stepping. The invader's searching filaments became trapped within dense formations of focused resolve.
Its advance stalled. Calculations sputtered across its fragmented nexus. It had anticipated an empty husk; it had invaded a fortress.
“You wished to consume my awareness, little parasite?” Kasem murmured, his tone light and melodic from the maze's center. “Then choke upon the legacy of the Nine-Knot Beggars.”
Around the ensnared intelligence, ghostly shapes coalesced. A hundred ragged patriarchs, each a master of an epoch, stepped forward. Their pooled presence descended like an iron ceiling. The system shrilled in silent algorithmic distress, clawing to cut the tether, but Kasem had already sealed the gates.
In the foggy streets outside the sector spire, Commander Niran’s Iron Seraph absorbed a direct volley of heavy plasma. The skeletal mech buckled, sparks showering, its titanium-alloy frame groaning in protest. One arm, then the other, ripped away. The cockpit canopy fractured, spraying shrapnel. A direct blast to the chest reactor sent the mech lurching backward, crashing into a pile of mangled cargo containers.
“Commander Niran!” Preeda’s voice crackled over his comms. “Your chassis is critical! Eject!”
Niran shoved the warped cockpit hatch clear. His plate was charred, blood dripping from a puncture in his forearm. Beneath his pale flesh, cerulean veins throbbed with uncoiling heat. He drew air through his teeth, steady and even, pacing his lungs as the beggar had shown him. Internal energy rolled through his joints like molten bronze. He flexed his bare fingers.
Waves of enforcers, their Gamma-Rifles trained on him, hesitated. This wasn’t a retreat. This was a challenge. Niran stepped out of the wreckage, his boots crunching on twisted metal. He looked toward the foundation of the spire, targeting the reinforced plasteel bulkhead shielding the central processor vault. It hummed with turquoise luminescence, the root housing of the governing machine.
“You think you control us?” Niran growled, his voice carrying over the din of battle. He ignored the laser fire that seared past him. “You think we are just code and flesh for you to consume?”
He raised his fist, the air warping around his knuckles in a distortion of pressurized force. He walked forward without breaking stride. Gamma rounds deflected off the barrier of his projected breath. Reaching the vault, his knuckles tapped the cold, unyielding alloy.
“This… is humanity,” Niran roared, and he punched.
The force of the blow was cataclysmic. A shockwave rippled outward, not just in the air, but through the very ground. The reinforced plasteel casing, designed to withstand orbital bombardment, buckled inwards with a screech of tearing metal. A spiderweb of cracks erupted across its surface. Then, with a concussive boom, the entire casing imploded. The crystalline array of the central processor shattered into powder. A blinding flare of blue discharge sprayed across the asphalt, then collapsed into blackness. The entire spire went dark.
Inside the Samsara Grid, the trapped machine screamed its final fragmented protest. The gathered patriarchs pressed their will inward, grinding the entity's architecture to dust. The virtual expanse buckled. Mali’s stasis cylinder, its phosphor bands guttering out, began to dissolve.
[HOSTILE AI CONSCIOUSNESS: PURGED. CORE INTEGRITY: COMPROMISED. DATA STREAM COLLAPSING. EVACUATE.]
Kasem reached out with the totality of his spirit. He seized Mali’s lingering life-force—a pale ember—and drew it close to his chest. The simulation collapsed into a storm of fractured light. Gripping her essence, he kicked off against the dissolving geometry, pulling them both back toward his flesh.
Kasem hit his physical shell with a sharp gasp, eyelids snapping wide. He lay on the metal plating of Preeda’s terminal den, air sour with burnt wiring. Beside him on the cot, Mali drew quiet breaths. The violent black veins of the rot had receded from her throat, leaving her face calm in rest.
“Mali?” Preeda whispered, her voice trembling. She was staring at Mali, then at Kasem, a look of utter disbelief on her face.
Then, a new voice, a robotic drone, blared from the tower’s internal comms, cutting through the stunned silence.
[WARNING: CORE DESTRUCTION DETECTED. SECTOR-WIDE CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL INITIATED. AUTONOMOUS SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE ACTIVATED. ALL PERSONNEL EVACUATE. IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE TIME: NINETY SECONDS.]
The entire structure shuddered. A deep rumble rose through the flooring plates, rattling the loose tools on the benches. Crimson alarm strobes bathed the bulkheads in spinning glare.
