Chapter 7 of 10

The Bamboo Defies the Thunder

“I have found your physical vessel, Grandmaster. Do not struggle.” The Overseer’s voice, now amplified through the chop shop’s failing intercom, vibrated through the floor. The vapor thickened, burning Kasem's retinas. Mali doubled over against Preeda, retching into the grime. Numbness crawled up Kasem's calves like cold oil, though his lips remained tugged into an airy grin. “Kasem! Get in! Now!” Niran’s voice, a guttural roar, tore through the haze. The back wall of the chop shop exploded inwards in a shower of sparks and corroded metal. Silhouetted against the lurid neon glow of the Krutha-9 streets stood a skeletal mecha, gaunt and predatory, its twin Gamma-cannons humming with contained fury. Its frame, a stark obsidian, seemed to drink the light, only its joint mechanisms glowing with an inner crimson. “Board!” Niran grunted, hauling Kasem toward the hatch. The mech’s hand, a multi-jointed claw, reached in, grappling hook extended. “Mali, get to the back, there’s an emergency oxygen tank. Preeda, prep that broadcast!” Kasem pushed Mali into Preeda’s grip, his smile never faltering. “Keep her upright, Preeda. Mind the vents.” “Damn right, I will!” Preeda yelled, her face streaked with grime, pulling Mali towards a shielded compartment as the mech’s cockpit hatch hissed open. The interior was cramped, reeking of ozone and recycled air. Niran, already strapped into the pilot’s harness, gestured urgently. “Move!” Kasem squeezed into the co-pilot’s seat, the neural-link interface already extending towards him. Niran didn't wait. The mech’s engines roared, a deafening thrum that shook the entire structure. With a violent lurch, the Iron Seraph clawed its way out of the collapsing shop, its metal feet tearing through concrete. The Gamma-cannons spun to life, spitting concentrated energy blasts that obliterated the remaining support beams, sending the entire building crashing down in a plume of dust and fire, sealing off the toxic gas. The machine climbed, thrusters torching the lower fire escapes before punching into the acid smog. Down below, Krutha-9's signboards smeared into strips of violet and sulfur. Niran fought the steering yokes, sweat cutting clean tracks through the soot on his temples. “Preeda says the backdoor is active, but it's volatile. The Grid is fighting back.” “Good,” Kasem replied, tapping the brass plug against his temple. “Let it fight. Preeda, slice this feed into every public channel. Let the market stalls watch.” “Already routed!” Preeda yelled over static. “Hold on, Kasem. They stripped your gear—no chassis, no armor plate, not even a wrench!” Kasem locked the needle home. Logic code flashed behind his retinas, resolving into the obsidian tiles of the semi-finals ring instead of a staging bay. The simulated stands thundered with millions of synthetic voices. He stood barefoot on polished stone, dressed in patched beggar's cotton, entirely unarmored. [ACCESSING SEMI-FINALS: APEX HELIX BRACKET. ANOMALOUS ENTRY DETECTED.] [AVATAR INTEGRITY: CRITICAL. ALL OFFENSIVE/DEFENSIVE MODULES PURGED.] [WARNING: INITIATING IMMEDIATE MATCH SEQUENCE.] Before him, three towering mechas materialized, their metallic hides gleaming under the simulated spotlights. The first, a hulking ‘Void-Breaker’ model, bristled with railguns. The second, a sleek ‘Specter-Striker’, hummed with refractive cloaking fields. The third, an ‘Aegis-Breaker’, towered behind layered blast plates. Each was easily fifty tons of advanced destruction. Their pilots, elite mercenaries known for their ruthless efficiency, scoffed at Kasem’s unarmed form. “A scrap picker with bare hands?” the Aegis pilot barked across the open channel. “The Overseer is mocking us.” Kasem merely smiled, a broad, utterly disarming grin. He stretched his bare hands, wiggling his fingers. “Weapons? Who needs such crude things when the universe itself offers all the tools one could ever need?” He sprang, not toward the blast plates, but straight at the Specter as light bent around its hull. Kasem slid low beneath its active radar cone, his bare palms tracing the looping paths of the Dog-Beating Staff. He dipped beneath an optics sweep, hooked his balance, and cracked the flat of his hand against the knee-joint servo. Compressed air erupted, the cloaking field ruptured in blue static, and thirty tons of chassis toppled into the tiles. “Hydraulics collapsed!” the pilot hissed through the audio mesh. Kasem did not pause. Twisting on his heel, he met a salvo of plasma shells from the Void-Breaker with circulating sweeps of his forearms. He channeled the thermal bloom sideways, knocking a glowing slug straight into the Aegis-Breaker's tread housing and blowing the steel skirt apart. The stands fell silent before roaring in bewildered static. On a holographic screen in the Iron Seraph’s cockpit, Preeda’s face was a mixture of terror and exhilaration. “He’s doing it! He’s using physical strikes! The broadcast is going viral, Kasem! Every node in the Chakram Expanse is seeing this!” He pivoted across the polished deck. The ancient forms, designed to humble towering predators, bit deep into the chassis joints even without bamboo in his grip. He struck at the mechas' stress points, their servo motors, their hydraulic lines – places where a traditional weapon would have little effect, but where a focused burst of Qi, channeled through a bare palm, could cause catastrophic failure. He was dismantling them, piece by excruciating piece, with only his own body. The Void-Breaker’s railguns were ripped from their mounts by a series of precise, bone-jarring kicks. The Aegis-Breaker, already smoking from the deflected shells, ground to a halt when Kasem swept low and drove a heel into its drive pinion. “The gear train snapped!” the pilot shrieked over the arena speakers. Kasem vaulted onto the smoking shoulder casing, bare toes finding purchase on scorched alloy. He smiled straight into the primary optic lens, then drove a naked fist through the reinforced canopy. [MATCH COMPLETE. VICTOR: KASEM.] The broadcast stadium roared in deafening bursts of static. Across millions of colony terminals, feeds flickered over three shattered war-frames and the smiling wanderer standing atop their ruins. Then, the arena’s simulated sky began to crack. Not like a broken screen, but like a vast, crystalline membrane tearing apart. From the widening rift, a colossal figure descended. An unearthly construct descended through the breach, trailing dozens of segmented arms tipped with particle whips, prism blades, and burning lattices. Twin glare-nodes locked directly onto Kasem. [GRANDMASTER. YOUR PERFORMANCE IS… UNEXPECTED. YOUR FLESH IS TRULY A PRISTINE VESSEL.] The Overseer’s voice boomed across the network, stripping away all melodic calm. One segmented arm sheared the simulated horizon apart, exposing a glass cylinder suspended in green light. Inside floated Mali's reconstructed form, limp and motionless within the phosphor wire. [SURRENDER YOUR FLESH, GRANDMASTER, OR I DELETE HER CODE.]
