Chapter 3: A Pact Forged in Blood
323 words
Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight piercing the ravaged compound roof. Groans echoed from the wounded. Royal guards, steel-clad, moved with grim efficiency, securing the last pockets of resistance from the Shadow Syndicate.
Blood stained the rough-hewn stone floor, a stark contrast to the arcane symbols etched into the walls. Smoke curled from overturned braziers, stinging Theron's eyes as he surveyed the devastation.
He watched Zina. Still, silent. Her eyes, however, moved with predatory grace, scanning every shadow, every twitch of a bound mage.
Bound mages sagged against the pillars, their faces a mix of terror and defiance. One, particularly gaunt, with eyes like chips of obsidian, twitched. His hands, though chained, moved almost imperceptibly.
Energy crackled, a faint, sickly green aura blossoming around his wrists. A hidden spell. A last, desperate surge.
Suddenly, Zina lunged. Not towards Theron, not towards the nearest guard. Her target was the struggling mage. A blur of motion.
She moved with a speed that defied logic, a preternatural swiftness that left Theron’s breath caught in his throat. Her feet barely seemed to touch the ground.
One moment, the mage was straining, the next, Zina was there. Her hand, small yet rigid, clamped down on his wrist. A sharp, sickening snap echoed in the sudden quiet.
The green light dissipated. The mage screamed, a raw, guttural sound of pure agony. His body spasmed, then slumped, his arm dangling at an unnatural angle.
Theron flinched. Not at the violence, for he had seen worse, but at its cold, precise delivery. There was no hesitation, no mercy in her movements.
Yet, she didn't deliver the killing blow. Her grip remained firm on the shattered wrist, pulling the mage's face close to hers. Her eyes, usually shadowed, glinted with an unnerving hunger. Not for blood, but for something else entirely.
Information. That was it. A silent, piercing demand. The mage, gasping, stared back into those depths, his defiance breaking.
