Chapter 6 of 10
A Sanctuary Besieged
928 words
The world imploded. The air in the sterile lab tore open, not with sound, but with a concussive tremor that rattled Mateusz’s teeth. The obsidian floor, moments ago a placid reflection, fractured into a spiderweb of light-eating cracks. A guttural shriek, raw and starving, ripped through the chamber, originating from nowhere and everywhere at once. The silent pressure that had defined the Shard’s existence returned, multiplied, pressing down like a mountain of dead stars.
`[Warning: Hostile Entities Detected. Purge Protocol Severity: Critical.]`
The message flashed, blinding, as the entire lab began to buckle. The reinforced ferro-glass walls, designed to withstand Echo Chamber breaches, groaned like tortured metal. Mateusz stumbled, the small flask of the officer's congealed blood slipping in his numb fingers. His mind, still reeling from the Null Broth’s corrosive touch and the subsequent rebound, struggled to piece together the chaos.
Then, the ferro-glass exploded inward. Not in shards; a thick surge of black, viscous flesh poured through the newly created aperture. These were not the common, shambling horrors Mateusz had seen in the Lower Levels. These were honed, predatory things – their forms like gaunt, starved wolves made of shadow and bone, eyes glinting with a malevolent, intelligent hunger. Apex predators, hunting.
Mateusz felt a sudden, sharp yank, and he was pulled backward, away from the encroaching darkness. A hand, strong and calloused, grabbed his arm. “Mateusz! Move!”
Neta. Her face, a blur of motion and stark concern in his memory-erased vision, was still a featureless void in his mind, but her presence was undeniable. The air around her shimmered, a visible distortion that pulsed with raw kinetic energy. She had blasted through the lab’s defenses, creating the very opening the beasts exploited. Behind her, Kamil scrambled in, his usually cheerful face a mask of strained focus.
“Mateusz, get down!” Kamil yelled, his voice tight and thin. He threw himself forward, arms wide, planting his feet firmly on the shattered obsidian. His body seemed to hum, radiating an inner glow that pushed back against the encroaching shadow-flesh.
`[Skill Activated: Sanctuary]`
The air solidified. Not just shimmered or glowed, but *hardened*. A dome of pure, radiant light burst forth from Kamil, expanding rapidly. It was an almost blinding white, thick and impenetrable, slamming into the advancing pack with the force of a physical barrier. The creatures shrieked, their shadowy forms recoiling, sizzling where they touched the light.
Mateusz gasped, shielding his eyes. The dome grew, encompassing them, sealing off the gaping holes in the lab's walls, pushing the intruders back. For a moment, the world was silent again, suspended within Kamil’s fortress of light.
But the silence was broken by a choked sound from Kamil. Mateusz looked at his friend. Kamil was trembling, his muscles taut, veins standing out on his neck. And from the corners of his eyes, thin rivulets of crimson liquid began to trickle, staining his pale cheeks. Blood.
“Kamil!” Neta cried, moving to his side, her usual pragmatism replaced by genuine alarm. “What is this? You never—”
“It’s fine,” Kamil rasped, wiping at his face with a trembling hand, smearing the blood. “Just… holding them back.” His gaze, however, was fixed on Mateusz, fixed on an agonizing plea for forgiveness. “Mateusz, I need to tell you something. Before it’s too late.”
The dome of light pulsed, the edges vibrating under the relentless assault of the beasts outside. Deep, rhythmic thuds against the barrier echoed in their ears, each one a hammer blow against Kamil's resolve.
“On Day One,” Kamil began, his voice barely a whisper, strained and raw, “when the Intrusion hit… they were assigning skills. You… you were meant for a combat skill. A strong one. I saw the prompt. [Rift Blade] or something like it.” He paused, taking a shuddering breath that made the blood in his eyes run faster. “I… I was terrified. For you. You were never meant for fighting. You were always so gentle.”
He met Mateusz’s gaze, pleading mutely for understanding. “I had a one-time use item. A [Destiny Weaver’s Token]. It let me… swap our assignments. I thought I was protecting you, Mateusz. Giving you something useless, something safe, so you wouldn’t have to fight. I thought you’d be safe with a skill like… [Gourmet’s Pantry].”
The words hung in the air, heavier than the collapsing ceiling. Mateusz stared, the implications settling like poison in his gut. His 'useless' skill, the one that had twisted into this parasitic horror, was a direct result of Kamil’s intervention. Not the System’s caprice, but a desperate, misguided act of friendship.
Outside, the thudding intensified, becoming a furious, coordinated battering. The dome of light flickered, the radiant white dimming, cracks beginning to appear in its once seamless surface. Kamil let out a strangled cry, fresh blood erupting from his nose and mouth.
“Mateusz, I’m so sorry,” he choked out, collapsing to his knees, his hands pressed against the glowing barrier as if trying to hold it together with sheer will. “I only wanted to… protect…”
With a deafening crack, the Sanctuary shattered. The brilliant light exploded into a thousand glittering motes, instantly extinguishing, plunging them into the near-darkness of the collapsing lab. The starved horrors, freed from their radiant prison, surged forward. One, larger than the others, an alpha with eyes like chips of volcanic glass, fixed on Kamil, who lay bleeding and gasping amidst the debris.
Mateusz stood frozen, the small flask of the officer's blood still clutched in his hand, its viscous contents glowing faintly with a sickly, internal light. He had a choice. A terrible, impossible choice.
