Chapter 1 of 10
A Taste of Ash and Honey
1.1k words
The stench of acrid ash and something metallic, like stale blood, clung to the air in the Lower Levels of the Shard of Varsovia. Mateusz hunched, shoulders tight, in front of Old Man Grzegorz’s stall. The old vendor’s face was a roadmap of wrinkles, each crease a story of survival. Mateusz pushed a small, rattling pile of scavenged wiring and shattered data chips across the dented metal counter.
“One nutrient bar,” Mateusz murmured, his voice barely audible above the distant groans of the Shard’s mechanisms and the hum of the energy conduits overhead. He avoided Grzegorz’s gaze, focusing instead on a crack in the floor where a cluster of phosphorescent fungi glowed faintly.
Grzegorz grunted, weighing the scrap in one hand, then snatched a vacuum-sealed nutrient bar from a crate beneath his stall. He slapped it down, the plastic wrapper slick with condensation. Mateusz’s fingers brushed the cold, hard rectangle, a tremor running through him. It was barely enough to last a day.
“Look at this rat, trying to bargain with junk.”
The sneering voice cut through the grime-filled air, freezing Mateusz in place. Maks, a hulking Awakened, stood a few paces away. His scarred face, adorned with a crude facial tattoo of a coiled serpent, was twisted in a familiar expression of disdain. Maks wore a custom-fitted combat jacket, its dark fabric shimmering faintly with built-in kinetic plating – a clear sign of his higher rank and formidable [Groundbreaker] skill. Two of his cronies, equally well-equipped, flanked him, smirking.
Mateusz felt his cheeks flush. He gripped the foil pack tighter, wishing the ground would open and swallow him.
“What’s your skill, Nowak?” Maks asked, stepping closer, his heavy boots thudding on the crystalline floor. He loomed over Mateusz, a predator assessing his prey. “I heard it’s ‘Culinary Synthesis’. Cooking, right?” Maks let out a bark of laughter, a harsh, grating sound. “What are you going to do, make me a sandwich?”
Mateusz flinched. The words were a common taunt, a reminder of his perceived uselessness in a world where combat skills dictated survival and status.
Suddenly, a crisp, white text box materialized in the corner of his vision. It flickered, stark against the shadowy interior of the Shard.
`[New Recipe Unlocked: 'Grief' Ash Sandwich]`
The words shimmered, then faded. Mateusz blinked, his mind reeling. A sandwich? Made of… Grief ash? Nausea knotted his stomach; the System never made jokes. The prompt was too specific, too unsettling.
Maks, oblivious to Mateusz’s internal turmoil, kicked a loose shard of crystal near Mateusz’s foot. “Pathetic. Get out of my sight before I decide you’re not worth the air you breathe.”
Mateusz didn’t need to be told twice. He clutched the packaged brick, blood pounding in his ears, and melted into the labyrinthine alleys of the Lower Levels, the laughter of Maks and his crew echoing behind him.
He found Kamil later, huddled in their usual alcove, a hidden nook behind a cascading pipe that constantly dripped purified water. Kamil, with his bright, open face and deceptively cheerful demeanor, was polishing a scavenged data slate. His [Sanctuary] skill, though non-combative, was invaluable for creating temporary, localized zones of calm and safety, often used for quiet trades or, as now, simply catching a breath.
“Rough day?” Kamil asked, not looking up, sensing Mateusz’s mood. His voice was soft, an anchor in the storm of Mateusz’s anxiety.
Mateusz just nodded, unwrapping the dense brick and taking a small, tasteless bite. The taste of humiliation was far stronger. He didn’t mention the System prompt. How could he? It sounded insane.
Hours later, as the Shard’s internal lights dimmed to a perpetual twilight, a commotion erupted from a larger, nearby plaza. Mateusz and Kamil, ever-curious and cautious, peered through a gap in the stacked cargo containers that formed their wall. A high-stakes deal was underway.
A woman with hair like spun copper, Aneta Kulesza, stood opposite a gaunt man in heavy robes, the leader of a minor scavenging guild. Aneta, even from this distance, exuded an aura of fierce competence. Her [Kinetic Transference] skill was widely feared, rumor claiming she could turn a gentle breeze into a crushing force.
Between them, on a pristine white cloth, rested an intact, shimmering vial. Its contents glowed with an ethereal, cerulean light. Mateusz recognized it from hushed rumors: an [Elixir of Fortitude], a legendary, incredibly rare alchemical concoction that could instantly heal grievous wounds or boost stamina to superhuman levels.
“The price is too high,” the robed man rasped, his voice tight. “Two full cargo hauls of refined Luxite for a single vial?”
Aneta’s expression remained impassive. “That’s the market price, old man. Take it or leave it.”
The robed man’s hand, trembling slightly, reached for the vial. His fingers brushed the glass, and in that instant, a sudden, violent tremor shook the Shard. It was a common occurrence, the structure constantly shifting and groaning under unseen stresses, but this one was sharper, more aggressive.
The vial slipped. It arced through the air, a fleeting sapphire streak, and struck the crystalline floor with a sickening *CRACK*. The sound echoed, amplified in the plaza. The glowing liquid splashed, scattering in a thousand brilliant droplets.
Chaos erupted. The robed man cried out in anguish. Aneta’s face remained stone, but her body tensed, ready for a fight. Guards immediately moved to secure the area, their weapons raised.
A cold drop landed on the back of Mateusz’s hand. It glowed faintly, a miniature star against his skin. An irrational, burning hunger flared within him, a primal urge he’d never felt before. Without thinking, without even processing the action, he brought his hand to his mouth and licked the drop clean.
The taste was like nothing he had ever experienced – a sharp, metallic sweetness, followed by an invigorating surge that made his dormant senses hum. It was a flavor of life itself, intense and alien.
Then, another System prompt. This one was larger, more insistent, filling his entire field of vision, blinding him to the chaos around them.
`[New Recipe Unlocked: Elixir of Fortitude]`
`[Ingredients: Purified Water (100ml), Grief Ichor (1ml), Personal Memory (1)]`
The last ingredient hit him like a physical blow. *Personal Memory.* The words pulsed, cold and unyielding. The hunger returned, a deeper, more insidious gnawing. He could make more. He could make *more*.
Kamil nudged him. “Mateusz? What’s wrong? You’re staring blankly.”
Mateusz slowly lowered his hand. His gaze was distant, fixed on something Kamil couldn’t see. A terrifying, hollow certainty settled over him.
“I can make more,” Mateusz whispered, the words barely a breath. He turned to Kamil, stare vacant and devoid of its usual shyness. The expression on his face was empty, like a mask carved from bone.
“What was our mother’s favorite song?”
