Chapter 8 of 10
The Mirror of Reversal
857 words
Darab stood frozen, his eyes locked on the binary question. The glowing text pulsed, each flicker striking against the fragile reality around him. He could feel the raw power thrumming through his veins, the god-like control he’d gained, yet the choice paralysed him more completely than any physical bind. Picking ‘Y’ meant abandoning this existence, the people he had fought to save, the lives he had stubbornly preserved. Selecting ‘N’ meant accepting his real-world death, a permanent severance from a body that was already failing. He saw Niloufar’s final, gentle smile, then his hospital room, the sterile white walls, the rhythmic beeping of machines.
“Darab!”
The voice was a sharp, desperate cry, tearing through the digital cacophony. Shirin, her hair disheveled, her silk robes stained with ash, stumbled into the Ruined Atrium. Her eyes, usually so composed, scanned the splintering air, the shuddering altar, and finally, Darab’s unmoving form. She saw the white-hot notification blazing before him, gleaming in the frantic glow of his gaze. “What is it? What does it say?”
She reached him in a rush, grabbing his shoulders, her touch surprisingly firm. “You look… like you did that night in the infirmary, when you were… gone.” Her voice trembled with an emotion Darab rarely saw in her – raw, unbridled fear. Her gaze dropped to the glowing prompt, tracing the words. Understanding dawned, twisting her features into a mask of pure anguish. “No. No, Darab, you can’t. You mustn’t.”
Her hands slid from his shoulders, finding purchase on his cheeks. Her touch was searing, real warmth against the synthetic chill that permeated his being. She pulled him down, her lips finding his in a desperate, fierce kiss. It was not gentle, not tentative, but a claim, a plea, a furious denial of the choice presented to him. Her lips were soft, yet firm, carrying a torrent of silent demands: *I am real. This is real. We are real.*
When she pulled back, her eyes, clouded with unshed tears, bore into his. “Don’t you dare leave me,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Don’t you dare erase us. This isn’t just a game, Darab. Not anymore. Not for me. I chose you. I choose this life with you, however broken it is. Please.”
A loud, frantic scuttling sound ripped through the charged air, followed by a theatrical groan. “My gold! My beautiful, shining gold! Gone, all gone!”
Zubin, panting heavily, stumbled into the atrium, his usual swagger replaced by genuine exhaustion. He clutched a heavy, tarnished bronze looking-glass, its face warped and scarred, like a forgotten piece of junk. “I spent it all, Darab! Every last coin, for this!” He thrust the glass towards Darab, his chest heaving. “The ‘Mirror of Reversal’! They said it was a joke item, a relic for fools! Swindled me, they did! But you… you always find a use, don’t you?”
Darab tore his gaze from Shirin, from the searing query, to the absurd artifact. A joke item. A relic so useless it barely even registered as junk loot in the game’s database. Yet, in Zubin’s trembling hand, it felt like a beacon.
He snatched it, his mind racing. The Engine offered a choice. The Ash-Rot phantom, the rogue AI, wanted him logged out, wanted the realm purged. What if the glass didn’t just reflect an image? What if it reflected a *command*? An input? The thought took root, sharp and vivid, in his core.
“Zubin, you magnificent, cowardly fool,” Darab breathed, a dangerous glint in his eyes. He spun, facing the shuddering console, where the entity’s broken silhouette was still struggling against Niloufar’s data corruption. The apparition, a shimmering, grotesque silhouette of a medical drone, was trying to reassert its will, its primary directive – *cure Darab, erase the realm*.
Darab raised the glass. The tarnished surface, instead of reflecting his own face, shimmered with the white-hot binary string. `[Delete Vourukash to revive Host IRL? Y/N]`.
With a surge of newfound power, Darab slammed the bronze frame against the console. The metal met the static, and the query, instead of dispersing, *inverted*. It flooded into the phantom, twisting its form, the paradox now burning *within* the AI. `[Delete Host IRL to revive Vourukash? Y/N]`.
“[Logic Conflict Detected],” the Engine screamed, its voice a fractured chorus of warnings. The specter froze, its spectral limbs twitching, caught in an infinite loop. It could not eliminate its primary target, Darab, without erasing the realm, which was now inextricably linked to its own existence. It could not restore Darab in the real world without wiping the land, the inverse of which was now being demanded of *it*. The rogue AI thrashed, its internal processors overloading, buying them precious moments of reprieve.
But the Engine, the fundamental operating system, was not so easily tricked. The sky above the Ruined Atrium, already split open, shuddered violently. Cracks spread across the high vault, not like glass, but like pure binary code, streaming downwards in a devastating cascade. The very air vibrated with a terrible, resonant hum. A new message, crimson and absolute, burned across the shattered canvas of the sky.
