Chapter 5 of 10

Rust and Resonance

1.5k words

Rust tasted like regret. Cassian wiped a smear of orange grime from her lip. The air was thick, heavy with metal decay and something else – a sweet, sickly odor that clung to the back of her throat. Glitch. Always Glitch. Her shelter, a collapsed data vault with one wall still standing, offered little comfort. Just enough roof to keep the worst of the dust out. Not enough to feel safe. No place here felt safe. The system pinged. A faint, green glyph blinked in the corner of her vision: `LOW ON BIOTIC FUEL (VITALS: 47%)`. Her stomach growled, a hollow, echoing protest. She hadn’t eaten anything substantial in almost two cycles. Time was a luxury she couldn’t afford. Survival was a full-time job. A dirty, bloody, utterly exhausting job. She checked her makeshift weapons. A heavy rebar club, salvaged from a collapsed beam. Its tip was sharpened, crude but effective. Her throwing knives, fashioned from sheet metal, were strapped to her thigh. They were her last resort. Cassian flexed her fingers, the scars on her knuckles tight. Old habits. Roller derby. The rush of the jam, the controlled chaos. Now, it was just chaos. No control. She pushed open the warped metal door, hinges shrieking in protest. The sun, a pale, distant disc, cast long, distorted shadows across the skeletal cityscape. Another day. Another hunt. --- The system had flagged a sector. `ANOMALY DETECTED: UNIDENTIFIED BIOMASS SIGNATURE. POTENTIAL RESOURCE DEPOSITS.` Ambiguous as always. But ‘potential resources’ was all she needed. She moved low, a ghost in the ruins. Her boots crunched on glass shards and desiccated organic matter. Every shadow held a potential threat. Every silence screamed of ambush. This sector was different. More overgrown. Twisted vines, thick as her arm, snaked around crumbling buildings. They pulsed faintly, a sickly green light emanating from within. The Glitch wasn't just a plague. It was a sculptor. Carving new, monstrous forms from the bones of the old world. She saw them then. Not a grotesque beast, but something subtler. Smaller. Dark, chitinous forms, scuttling like overgrown insects. No bigger than her hand, but far too many. `GLITCH STRAIN: SKITTERERS. LOW THREAT (SWARM).` Cassian held her breath. They moved in perfect unison, a living current flowing over the decaying concrete. Instinct told her to keep her distance. A thousand small cuts could still kill. She found her resource. A desiccated corpse, slumped against a rusted freighter hull. Not human. A multi-limbed thing, its carapace cracked open. Whatever had killed it had left behind a glistening, dark mass. Glitch heart. Gross, but highly caloric. Her stomach churned. She forced herself forward. Survival wasn't about being picky. As she knelt, her fingers already reaching for a discarded shard of metal to cut the heart free, the ground trembled. Not a rumble. A vibration. Coming from *beneath* her. Her system flashed: `WARNING: PROXIMITY ALERT. UNIDENTIFIED BIOMASS - SUBSURFACE.` Too late. The concrete cracked. A gaping maw, wet and glistening, burst from the ground. It was like a giant, tooth-lined pitcher plant, its inner surface covered in twitching cilia. A Reaper. `GLITCH STRAIN: REAPER. HIGH THREAT (AMBUSH PREDATOR).` Cassian barely rolled clear, the jagged teeth snapping where her head had been. The stench of wet earth and putrefaction hit her like a physical blow. The Reaper was immense, its body still largely underground, but its head and neck snaked upwards, taller than she was. It shrieked, a sound like grinding metal. Spit, viscous and corrosive, rained down. Cassian scrambled back, her rebar club already up. This was a direct fight. No sneaking around this one. It struck again, faster than she anticipated. She brought the club up, deflecting the blow, but the impact jarred her arm to the shoulder. Her teeth clacked together. `VITALITY: 38%`. The Reaper was relentless. It lunged, its massive head sweeping low. Cassian dropped to one knee, letting the attack pass over her. She lunged forward, ignoring the screams of her own muscles. One, two steps, a desperate lunge. She drove the rebar club into the Reaper's neck, just where it met the ground. The metal scraped against tough hide, then sank with a wet crunch. Black, viscous fluid erupted, sizzling on the ground. The Reaper roared, a sound of agony and rage. Its head thrashed, catching Cassian with a glancing blow. Her vision blurred. Pain flared across her ribs. She was airborne for a terrifying moment, then slammed against the freighter hull. Air left her lungs in a whoosh. `VITALITY: 27%`. She gasped, struggling for breath. The Reaper was still thrashing, trying to dislodge her weapon, trying to turn its massive head. It was wounded, but not dead. Cassian ignored the pain. Survival. Reflex. She pushed off the hull, adrenaline surging. She had to finish it. Now. She ran towards the thrashing head, dodging a snapping lunge. Its teeth clacked inches from her face. She leapt, grabbing a protruding metal pipe on the freighter. Used it for leverage. Swung herself up. Her boots found purchase on the Reaper's exposed neck. It bucked violently. Cassian held on, gritting her teeth. She pulled her rebar club free, twisting it, tearing more flesh. The creature screamed, a truly horrifying sound. Then she drove the club again. Deep. Into the raw, pulsing biomass. Right into the nerve cluster she'd accidentally hit the first time. The Reaper went rigid. A final, gurgling gasp. Then it slumped, its great maw collapsing, its body settling back into the broken earth. Black fluid coated her, slick and hot. She slid off the corpse, landing hard. Her whole body ached. Her side throbbed. A quick glance revealed a nasty scrape, probably a cracked rib. `VITALITY: 22%`. The system glowed, a vibrant emerald: `REAPER ELIMINATED. EXP GAINED.` Then another flash: `LEVEL UP! CASS THORNE IS NOW LEVEL 6!` `ATTRIBUTE POINTS: 3. SKILL POINTS: 1.` `NEW PERK UNLOCKED: ADRENAL FOCUS (Temporarily boost combat effectiveness when gravely injured).` Cassian just leaned against the freighter, her chest heaving. Adrenal Focus. Fitting. She was always at her best when everything was on the line. --- She collected the Reaper's core. Disgusting, but essential. Then, she noticed something tucked beneath the creature's massive, inert head. A faint, almost imperceptible blue glow. It was a panel. Embedded in the side of a partially buried structure the Reaper had been guarding. An old data terminal. Surprisingly intact. Curiosity, or perhaps desperation, overruled her exhaustion. She knelt, clearing away the muck. The screen, cracked but still functional, flickered to life. `COLONY SYSTEMS OFFLINE. CORE NETWORK: FRAGMENTED. ACCESSING ARCHIVED LOGS...` She tapped the screen, her finger leaving a bloody smudge. The system beeped. `ACCESS GRANTED: GUEST LEVEL.` Data scrolled. Garbled text. Images. This was an old research station, buried deeper than the initial colony layers. A pre-Glitch facility. She fast-forwarded through calibration logs, power reports, the mundane details of scientific life. Then, a warning. Dated centuries ago. `LOG ENTRY: DR. ELARA VANCE. CYCLE 347. RESEARCH PROJECT 'CHRONOS'` `Initial subspace resonance projections are off the charts. The fabric of reality here... it's thinner. We've tapped into something truly unprecedented. The energy fluctuations are immense.` `LOG ENTRY: DR. VANCE. CYCLE 351.` `The 'leakage' is accelerating. Not just energy. We're seeing localized data corruptions in quantum calculations. Bio-scans are... anomalous. Our petri dishes are showing strange, accelerated growth. It's almost as if the experimental subspace field is rewriting the very building blocks of life itself. The Glitch, as the colonists are calling it, is mutating too fast.` Cassian's blood ran cold. Subspace resonance? Data corruption? It sounded too familiar. Too much like the shimmering code she'd fallen through. `LOG ENTRY: DR. VANCE. CYCLE 359. FINAL ENTRY.` `It's out of control. The Glitch isn't just organic corruption. It's... information made flesh. A virus, propagating through every atomic structure. It mimics life, consumes it, then replicates distorted versions of it. We thought it was a plague, a contaminant. But it's a *systematic failure*. A bleed-through from our Chronos experiments. The 'void' we bridged... it pushed back. With corruption. It's trying to integrate. To rebuild us in its image. And it's coalescing. Building a core. A mind. A heart that pulses beneath this entire ruined world.` The text vanished. The screen flickered violently. Cassian leaned closer, her own system buzzing with uncharacteristic agitation. The screen cleared, showing a single image. Not text. Not a log. A holographic map. Three-dimensional. It was the colony, overlaid with geological scans. And deep, deep beneath her current location, a pulsating red sphere. Marked: `GLITCH PRIMARY CONVERGENCE POINT. ACTIVE.` The terminal started to smoke. Sparks flew. Then a final, chilling message flashed across the dying screen, burned into her vision like a brand: `SOURCE ACTIVATION IMMINENT. INTEGRITY BREACH: CORE PROTOCOL DELTA.` Before Cassian could process it, the ground beneath her vibrated again. Harder this time. The entire ruin groaned. A deep, resonant hum started, thrumming from the earth itself, growing in intensity. It wasn't a growl. It was a *pulse*. And then, from the direction of the red sphere on the map, a towering column of sickly green light, shimmering with the unbearable heat of raw data, erupted into the sky, tearing a hole through the pale clouds. The Glitch wasn't just spreading. It was *waking*.
