Chapter 9 of 10

The Harvest of Echoes

980 words

The six guardsmen, their halberds low, hesitated at the threshold of the Durnport botanical. Copper breastplates gleamed, reflecting the ruby glow of the Fire-Lily’s dying embers. Steam plumed from the damp earth, smelling of hot rain and fertile soil. Then, a figure stepped from behind the armored men, her silken cloak, the color of bruised plums, dramatically catching the light. Kresen, her face a mask of elegant triumph, swept past the guards, her gaze falling not on Fiala or Bramin, but on the three burgeoning blooms. “A spectacular display, wouldn’t you agree, Captain Rivenna?” Kresen’s voice, usually a delicate bell-chime, now possessed an almost brittle edge of proprietorship. She addressed the lead guard, a stern woman with a neatly braided queue, before turning with an even wider, if strained, smile towards a portly man in deep azure robes who now bustled into the entry. “Mayor Ervin, you arrive just in time to witness the fruits of… *our* combined efforts.” Mayor Ervin of Pendrith, his face florid and his brow beaded with sweat from the sudden heat, peered at the vibrant flora. “Goodness gracious! The Solace-Blooms, they live! And in such abundance! A true miracle, Kresen, a true miracle.” He dabbed at his forehead with a silk square, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and political opportunism. Kresen’s smile tightened, her eyes flashing briefly at Fiala, who still knelt by the border stones, her hands resting on the wet loam. Bramin remained by her, a silent, watchful sentinel. Kresen walked directly to the nearest Solace-Bloom, its crimson corona now a brilliant azure, humming with a gentle, internal light. She extended a manicured hand, plucking the luminous bloom from its stem with an abrupt, almost violent tug. A sharp, crystalline *snap* echoed in the sudden silence. "Evidence of the dedication required for such rare cultivation, Mayor," Kresen declared, turning back, the glowing flower held aloft like a trophy. Its azure radiance pulsed, illuminating the fine lines of strain around her eyes. She moved towards Mayor Ervin, a politician’s grace in every step, intending to present him with the bloom. As her outstretched hand approached the Mayor, the vibrant blue flower flickered. A faint, almost imperceptible tremor ran through its radiant structure. The luminous aura around it dimmed, then intensified in a furious, brief pulse, like a heartbeat stuttering. Kresen paused, a puzzled frown marring her calculated expression. A faint, acrid scent, like burnt sugar, wafted through the air. Then, with a sound like dry kindling igniting, the Solace-Bloom in Kresen’s grasp erupted into a burst of blue-white light. It wasn't a gentle dispersal, but a furious, self-destructive flare. The flower shriveled, its vibrant hues fading to dull grey. Ash, fine and cold, rained down from her palm, coating the polished stones and the Mayor’s sleeve in a ghostly dust. The rich scent of rain-soaked earth and dried lavender was suddenly replaced by the sharp tang of something irrevocably lost. Mayor Ervin recoiled, sputtering, brushing frantically at his robes. Captain Rivenna’s eyes narrowed, her hand instinctively going to the hilt of her sidearm. A collective gasp rippled through the guards. Kresen stared at her open palm, where only a lingering wisp of smoke now curled, her face a mask of shock and dawning horror. Her polished façade shattered, revealing the raw, ugly fear beneath. Fiala rose slowly, her movements unhurried, as if emerging from a deep reverie. She did not raise her voice, did not accuse, did not even glance at the ash-stained floor. Her eyes, filled with an ancient, bottomless sorrow, met Kresen's. There was no anger, no triumph, no bitter satisfaction. Only a profound, devastating pity. “Kresen,” Fiala’s voice was soft, barely above a murmur, yet it cut through the stunned silence of the gallery. “Why? Why all of this?” She took a hesitant step forward, her gaze unwavering. “If you had only asked… I would have given you everything. My grandmother’s estate, the blooms, anything you needed. You never had to take it this way.” Kresen flinched as if struck, her eyes wide, glistening. The pity in Fiala’s gaze was a more potent weapon than any shout or condemnation. It bypassed her rigid defenses, striking the very core of her being. The absence of Fiala’s despair, the sheer, unyielding kindness radiating from her, was an alien force that Kresen could not comprehend, let alone manipulate. [FATAL ERROR: TARGET DESPAIR: NULL] [SYSTEM CORE INTEGRITY: COMPROMISED] [ASSET LIQUIDATION INITIATED: IMMEDIATE] Kresen clutched at her head, a strangled cry escaping her lips. Her body began to tremble violently, her eyes rolling back in her head. She stumbled backward, bumping into a stone pillar, then sliding down its cold surface. A phantom claw seemed to rake across her mind, tearing, pulling, as if something invisible but immensely powerful was being ripped from her very essence. Her scream was raw, guttural, a sound of agony and pure, unadulterated terror that echoed horribly through the vast, steamy space. Her limbs thrashed, her pinned hair loosening across her shoulders as she fought against an unseen force. “No! No, you can’t!” she shrieked, her voice hoarse, cracking. “It’s mine! All of it! I deserve it!” But her pleas were useless. The invisible force continued its brutal extraction, leaving Kresen gasping, writhing on the ground. Her eyes, once sharp and calculating, were now unfocused, clouded with a profound emptiness. She looked utterly broken, stripped bare. Her expensive cloak lay twisted around her, a pathetic heap of dark fabric against the damp earth. Kresen collapsed fully, her body slumping into the wet dirt, unmoving. The opulent clothing, the carefully arranged hair, the years of scheming and ambition, all seemed to drain from her, leaving behind only a hollow shell. The heavy silence that followed her last, choked sob was absolute, broken only by the distant drip of water from the remaining overhead panes. [Trial failed; commencing total erasure.]
