Chapter 8 of 10
The Tribunal's Ambush
1.2k words
The obsidian walls of the subterranean vault pressed inward, reflecting the stark azure glow of the floating monitors. Oshara felt Kavren’s hand tighten around hers, a silent anchor in the oppressive stillness. Every gaze at the round table was fixed and sharp. Matriarch Renza, at the head, uncoiled her predatory smile, a slow, deliberate unveiling of fangs.
“Welcome, Oshara,” Renza’s voice, a silken cord woven with steel, resonated through the room. “You arrive precisely on cue. Perhaps for once, you will follow a directive.”
The Jentil shareholder board watched in rigid stillness. Oshara felt the tremor start deep in her core, a familiar echo of the panic that had seized her in the elevator. But the memory of Kavren’s scarred hand, the taste of his desperate kiss, solidified her resolve. She met Renza’s gaze, her spine straightening.
“I am here, Matriarch,” Oshara stated, her voice steady despite the slight tremor in her hands. “As is my right. As a Jentil.”
“A Jentil by birth, perhaps,” Renza countered, her smile never wavering, “but hardly by temperament or acumen. You’ve proven yourself incapable of managing even the most basic marital alliance, letting a minor scandal threaten the very stability of our house. Such weakness is intolerable.” She gestured with a dismissive flick of her wrist toward an empty seat beside her. “Therefore, to secure the consortium and ensure your own stability, a more… fitting arrangement has been made.”
A hulking figure rose from a distant chair, his broad shoulders filling the space like a storm front. Lord Kaelus, CEO of the brutal Automaton collective, moved with an unsettling fluidity for his size. His eyes, the color of tarnished steel, swept over Oshara, lingering with an possessive glint that turned her stomach. Nausea churned in her stomach.
“Oshara Jentil,” Kaelus said, his gravelly baritone vibrating against the floor plates. “I anticipate our union with… great interest. Our combined houses will thrive.”
Kavren’s grip tightened further, a low growl barely audible under his breath. Oshara felt the heat of his anger, a protective aura surrounding her. She wouldn’t allow it. Not this. Not ever again.
Then, a familiar, smug sneer pulled her attention to another figure. Rellian Gade. He sat across from Matriarch Renza, radiating an obnoxious self-satisfaction. A luminous schematic hovered before him, mapping a complex web of corporate assets that eclipsed even the most generous Jentil acquisition estimates. He held up a data drive, glinting under the pale light.
“Fear not, Matriarch,” Rellian preened, his voice thick with unearned triumph. “I may have been burdened by an… ungrateful partner, but my genius remains. The Core patent, fully integrated and ready for transfer, will ensure the Jentil Consortium’s dominance for decades. A small price, I believe, for the recognition I deserve. And for seeing my ex-wife finally put in her place.” His gaze flicked to Oshara, dripping with contempt, then settled on Dessa, who stood a few feet behind Oshara, her face a mask of controlled fury.
“Indeed,” Renza purred, her gaze locked on the drive in Rellian’s hand, ignoring his crude jab. “A mutually beneficial arrangement, Master Gade. Three billion credits, and a seat on the Jentil executive board, in exchange for your intellectual property and Oshara’s… permanent re-alignment.”
The casual brutality of Renza’s words, the implied threat behind “re-alignment,” slammed into Oshara. This wasn’t just a tribunal; it was an execution. They intended to strip her of everything: her freedom, her agency, her future. The instinct to yield withered, replaced by sharp, focused fury. She pulled her hand from Kavren’s, the gesture sharp and decisive.
With a newfound focus, Oshara walked past Kavren, her movements fluid and deliberate. She ignored the stares, the whispers, the predatory glint in Kaelus's eyes. She bypassed the open seat Renza had indicated and strode directly to the head of the circular table, stopping inches from the Matriarch. The air grew heavy and taut.
Her hand, steady and unyielding, reached out. It grasped the heavy, ornate Tribunal Gavel, carved from a dense, darkwood, that rested beside Renza’s control console. The Matriarch's brows drew tight, a flicker of surprise breaking through her icy composure.
Without a word, Oshara lifted the gavel high. The entire room froze. Then, with a resounding *CRACK* that echoed off the stone, she brought it down, slamming it against the sonic-dampening surface of the table.
“This Tribunal,” Oshara declared, her voice ringing with an authority that stunned even herself, “is not in session. Not yet. Not until *I*, the rightful Jentil heiress, choose to convene it.” Her gaze, now cold and unwavering, locked onto Renza’s. “You overplay your hand, Matriarch. And you underestimate the lengths I will go to protect what is truly mine. My freedom. And Dessa Marint’s legacy.”
Rellian, startled by the unexpected outburst, scoffed. “Legacy? What legacy? This is *my* moment. Matriarch, if you would indulge me, I shall prove the unrivaled brilliance of the Core. Let her watch as I secure my triumph.”
He locked the drive into a port on the console, routing its telemetry into a central projector. The vault darkened further as the emitter whirred to life, a three-dimensional blueprint of the Core blooming into existence above the table. It pulsed with vibrant, intricate energy, its simulated circuits humming.
“Behold!” Rellian bellowed, his voice amplified, a showman reveling in his perceived victory. “The pinnacle of energy synthesis! The pinnacle of the Meridian Ascendancy, all thanks to *my* innovation!” He typed a final command, ready to initiate the transfer sequence. “This, my dear Oshara, is what you lost. And what you can never reclaim.”
A sharp crackle ripped through the projection. The cobalt schematics flickered, then began to dissolve, segment by segment. Rellian’s triumphant grin twisted into confusion. A single line of code, stark and accusatory, began to scroll across the wall screens.
`INITIATING CORE DEFRAGMENTATION PROTOCOL: ‘DAWNBREAKER’`
`AUTHOR: D. MARINT. V. 3.4.1`
The Core, Rellian’s stolen prize and ticket to power, was being systematically, irreversibly purged. Live. The digital feed glitched, pixelated, then collapsed inward, imploding into scattered static. Where the intricate blueprint had been, only a stark, black void remained.
Rellian stared, his jaw slack, his face draining of all color. He frantically pounded the table, screaming obscenities as he tried to resurrect the disappearing data, but it was gone. Every line. Every algorithm. Every stolen dream.
On the screens, Dessa Marint’s name, bold and undeniable, hung like a judgment. The hall erupted in murmurs. Matriarch Renza’s face, usually a mask of control, contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. Her silver cane clattered to the floor.
“Guards!” Renza shrieked, her voice cutting through the stunned silence. Her eyes, burning with a dangerous cold fire, fixed on Dessa. “Seize that woman! For corporate espionage! For sabotage! For the utter destruction of Jentil assets!”
Two hulking Jentil enforcers, their armored forms suddenly appearing from the shadows behind Dessa, moved with terrifying speed. Their armored hands reached out, ready to pin Dessa to the floor. Oshara looked from the determined faces of the enforcers to Dessa’s terrified eyes, then to the unyielding wrath in Renza’s gaze. The choice, stark and brutal, crystallized before her. Save Dessa, or secure her own freedom. The clock was ticking.
