The Stolen Genius

Kavren’s hand shot out, not toward the desk, but to Oshara’s arm. His grip was firm, anchoring her. “No, not alone,” he stated, his voice a low, resonant command that cut through the crackling feed. The desperation in Dessa Marint’s eyes on the monitor showed a vulnerability Oshara recognized, a helplessness she had only just begun to shed. It wasn't the arrogant sneer of a mistress, but the hollow gaze of a cornered animal. “She’s in Sub-Level Gamma, service tunnel access point three,” Kavren informed the Spire’s security dispatch with an efficiency that belied the sudden shift in his demeanor. His other hand was already sweeping files and data pads into a secure drawer, his office tidied with practiced speed. “Jentil personnel only. Ensure a med-team is on standby at the primary med-bay entrance.” He moved with a controlled intensity, grabbing a small, hardened data slate from his desk. “Rellian’s breach of the Spire was audacious,” he explained, his gaze meeting hers, “but even he wouldn’t be foolish enough to linger for long. This… this is different. Dessa wouldn’t be here unless she was utterly desperate, or fleeing something far worse.” They moved from his office, the hushed, opulent corridors of the executive floor giving way to the stark, functional passages leading down. The descent was swift, the express lift plunging them through layers of Jentil infrastructure, each level shedding the gilded veneer for raw, exposed conduit and durasteel plating. The air grew cooler, thinner, tasting faintly of ozone and recycled air. Oshara’s mind raced, picturing the Dessa she knew: the sharp, unyielding woman who had always seemed to relish her status as Rellian’s favored companion. The image on the security monitor, however, showed a ruined survivor. “Sub-Level Gamma Med-Bay, designation G-7,” Kavren announced as the lift doors hissed open onto a narrow, dimly lit corridor. The walls here were unadorned, the floor a functional, industrial polymer. A few uniformed Jentil security personnel stood guard outside a heavy, reinforced door marked with the glowing emerald cross of medical services. They acknowledged Kavren with crisp, silent deference. Inside, the med-bay was spartan. Polished silver surfaces gleamed under cool, clinical lights. A single examination cot sat in the center of the room, and perched on its edge, cradling a worn, thick data sheaf against her chest, was Dessa Marint. Her matted hair clung to a forehead smeared with grime. The crimson streak on her cheek had dried to a dark scab, and the bruise beneath her eye was a sickly purple. Her clothes were indeed singed, a jagged tear running down one sleeve revealing an angry burn mark. She flinched as Oshara and Kavren entered, her eyes, wide and bloodshot, darting between them before fixing on Oshara. There was no arrogance, no jealousy. Only profound, shaking terror. The data sheaf trembled in her grip. “Oshara,” she rasped, her voice hoarse, a stark contrast to the sharp, confident tone Oshara remembered. Oshara approached cautiously, her own anger at Dessa warring with the unsettling sight of her brokenness. “Dessa. What happened?” Dessa’s lower lip quivered. She looked down at the data sheaf, pressing it tighter. “He found out I was gathering proof. That I was going to expose him.” A tear tracked a clean path through the dirt on her cheek. “He didn’t just steal it, Oshara. He chained me to him. Made me watch him take credit for my life’s work.” Kavren stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “Chained you how? You were seen as his partner, his confidante.” Dessa finally lifted her gaze, tears streaming freely now. Her voice was a broken whisper. “He threatened my family, my younger sister’s scholarship. He said if I ever breathed a word, if I ever tried to claim the Cerulean Core as my own, he would ruin them all. And then… then he insisted I maintain the illusion. That I be his… his trophy. His mistress. So no one would ever believe me. He isolated me, made sure I had no one else to turn to, no one to corroborate my story. He made sure I appeared complicit.” Her grip on the data sheaf tightened until her knuckles were white. “These… these are the original schematics. The genesis code. Every single line is digitally signed to my private quantum key. He didn’t even change the root signature, just encrypted it beneath layers of his own proprietary ‘additions’.” The resentment Oshara had harbored against Dessa dissolved into sharp, calculated anger directed entirely at Rellian. He hadn’t just cheated and betrayed; he had systematically dismantled another person’s life, twisting her into a grotesque caricature to serve his own greed. Oshara looked at the bruised, trembling woman, clutching her stolen legacy like a lifeline. It wasn’t enough to just ruin Rellian for herself anymore. It was about justice. It was about restoration. It was about ensuring Dessa’s genius, her life’s work, was returned to its rightful owner, no matter what Matriarch Renza had planned. “We’ll prove it,” Oshara said, her voice steadier than she expected, a new resolve hardening her tone. She met Dessa’s gaze, a silent pact forming between them. “Every single line. We’ll expose him, Dessa. For everything he’s done.” Dessa stared, blinking back moisture as relief smoothed the tension around her mouth. Kavren, watching the interaction, offered a slight, almost imperceptible nod. The tacit understanding in the room solidified into an alliance. Suddenly, the data slate Kavren had brought from his office chirped. Its display, linked to internal Jentil communication relays, flared to life with a rapidly decrypting transmission. A stylized Jentil sigil glowed briefly before dissolving into a live feed. Matriarch Renza’s serene, formidable face appeared on the glass, perfectly composed. Opposite her, looking distinctly uncomfortable despite his attempts at bravado, was Rellian Gade. They were in a private, heavily shielded meeting room, far from the Jentil Spire’s public-facing spaces. Oshara felt a prickle of unease. Renza meeting with Rellian? Behind her back? The Matriarch’s lips moved, too far away for Oshara to discern the words, but Rellian’s reaction was visible: a greedy smile, a subtle nod of agreement. Kavren’s eyes narrowed, tracking the broadcast. He tapped a hidden control on the data slate, and a sliver of audio cut through, distorted but clear enough to catch the Matriarch’s cool, authoritative voice. “...and with the Severance Writ firmly established, the Jentil Consortium is prepared to offer you three billion credits for the full transfer of all patents and associated intellectual property to a Jentil subsidiary. In return, Oshara Jentil will sign an irrevocable non-disclosure, ensuring her permanent silence regarding your… personal affairs.” Oshara gasped. Kavren’s head snapped up, his gaze locking onto hers, dark with fury. “Your aunt just offered him three billion credits and your permanent silence.”
