Chapter 3 of 10
The Beggar's Court

“Oshara!” Rellian’s voice, raw with outrage, tore through the Spire’s atrium and echoed even into the sound-dampened Tribunal Room. “You thieving maid! Return what’s mine! Give me back my wife!”
Kavren’s focus never wavered from the tablet where the stolen code pulsed in sharp azure. “He doesn’t even know what he’s lost,” he murmured, his voice low, almost a personal observation. He rose, a fluid motion that conveyed controlled power, and extended a hand to Oshara. “Matriarch Renza has already been informed of the breach. She requests your immediate presence in the lobby concourse.”
Oshara froze, knuckles blanching against the polished console. Rellian was out there. He had smashed his way into the Jentil Spire. And Renza wanted her to face him. Her stomach twisted, a familiar knot of apprehension, but the image of Rellian demanding she kneel, the memory of Dessa’s sneer, hardened something in her core. She had walked out. There was no turning back.
She took Kavren’s hand. His grip was firm, cool, a steady anchor. He led her from the Tribunal Room, through the hushed corridors, towards the main central shaft. The Jentil Spire was designed to funnel all attention to its central axis, a colossal rotunda stretching hundreds of stories high, crowned by a crystalline dome. At its base, grand marble stairs descended like a frozen waterfall, sweeping down to the main concourse.
As they stepped onto the uppermost landing, a hush fell over the assembled Jentil security forces and the gaping corporate visitors. Rellian, still amidst the wreckage of his Grav-hauler, looked up. His eyes, wild and bloodshot, fixed on Oshara.
She wore a dress of midnight cyan, spun with optic fibers that shimmered like captured starlight. Cascading down her collarbones, a Jentil heirloom necklace—a choker of raw, uncut prismatic diamonds—caught the ambient light, scattering it in sharp, brilliant shards. Her hair, usually confined in a simple knot, was expertly styled, gleaming like polished obsidian. Kavren stood a step behind her, an imposing shadow. Matriarch Renza, a figure of formidable elegance, watched from a private balcony overlooking the entire scene, her expression unreadable.
Rellian’s enraged shouts withered instantly. His jaw sagged. He blinked, rubbing at his eyes as if to clear a hallucination. He had expected to see his 'maid,' apron-clad, perhaps even trembling. Instead, a woman of impossible poise, draped in Jentil wealth, descended towards him.
“O-Oshara?” The name was a ragged whisper, a ghost of the fury that had just torn through the Spire. His gaze swept over the diamonds, the Jentil sigil emblazoned subtly on Kavren’s arm, the sheer, unassailable might of the Spire itself. The pieces clicked into place, each one a hammer blow to his carefully constructed arrogance.
This wasn’t his subservient wife. This was *an* heiress. *The* heiress. The Jentil heiress he had disparaged, ignored, and secretly begged for funding. The ‘Angel Investor’ he’d spoken to on the phone, desperate for a bridge loan, was standing before him, not as a savior, but as a judge.
His face, already contorted with rage, now twisted into an even uglier mask of disbelief and dawning horror. The public humiliation, visible on the faces of the Spire’s staff and the security detail, was a physical weight. He had just bellowed demands at a Jentil Matriarch’s granddaughter, the very hand that had fed his company, while crashing a vehicle through her family’s headquarters.
“You… you were my Angel?” His voice cracked, high-pitched and incredulous. “All this time? You funded Cerulean Core? You… you let me treat you like that? A… a maid?”
He lunged forward, a harsh snarl wrenching from his chest. “You played me! You thieving, conniving–”
Kavren moved with a speed that belied his calm demeanor. He didn’t physically stop Rellian; instead, his hand shot out, not to strike, but to press a glowing data-tablet into Rellian’s chest. The tablet flared with an iridescent sapphire light, projecting a legal document directly onto Rellian’s tunic. The words, *Severance Writ: Jentil Consortium vs. Gade Solutions*, blazed across his chest, followed by a torrent of legal code.
“Rellian Gade,” Kavren’s voice was a cold, precise instrument, amplified just enough to carry through the vast floor. “Effective immediately, the Jentil Consortium has invoked Clause 7.3b of the Meridian Ascendancy Corporate Liability Act. All Jentil-sourced investment in Gade Solutions, including but not limited to the Cerulean Core project, is hereby frozen. Furthermore, you are legally barred from accessing company assets, proprietary data, and all associated financial instruments without express Jentil approval.”
He paused, letting the silence drive the terms home. “This writ also enacts a temporary restraining order, prohibiting you from contacting Oshara Jentil or any Jentil representative. Any further attempts at breach will result in immediate detainment and permanent corporate blacklisting.”
Rellian stared at the glowing writ on his chest, then at Kavren, then at Oshara, who stood, a picture of serene, untouchable power. His eyes darted to the shattered Grav-hauler, then back to the Severance Writ. His company. His life’s work. Frozen. Gone. By *her*.
“You can’t!” Rellian shrieked, his voice cracking with desperation. “You can’t take it! I still have the Cerulean Core! It’s patented! It’s mine! You can’t stop me from manufacturing it, from selling it, from taking over the sector!”
From her perch high above, Matriarch Renza’s gaze sharpened. A subtle, predatory glint appeared in her aged eyes. She had heard enough.
Minutes later, the Spire’s security escorting a protesting, handcuffed Rellian from the premises, Oshara found herself on Renza’s private balcony. The Matriarch’s sharp stare bore down on her, far more unsettling than Rellian’s rampage.
“He claims to possess the Cerulean Core,” Renza stated, her voice smooth as polished stone, yet cutting. “A significant piece of tech, if his bluster is to be believed. A piece of tech that, I believe, your ‘Angel’ funding helped develop.”
Oshara felt a constricting band tighten around her ribs. “It’s Dessa Marint’s code, Matriarch. He stole it.”
Renza’s lips curved in a thin, knowing smile. “Irrelevant. What matters is who *holds* it, and who can *claim* it. And now, my dear Oshara, that tech is a very public, very contentious piece of leverage. Your ex-husband, a man you allowed to publicly humiliate you within our own Spire, holds what could be a keystone asset. This is a PR scandal we cannot afford.”
She stepped closer, her gaze piercing. “Your weakness, your conflict-aversion, has allowed this to fester. Now, you will fix it. One week, Oshara. One Jentil week. You will secure that technology for the Consortium. You will leverage its true ownership, and bring it into the family’s portfolio. If you fail, if that tech remains with Rellian Gade, or worse, slips into rival hands, then your engagement to a rival CEO will be announced at the Solstice Gala. A swift, decisive marriage to consolidate power and erase the stain of this… incident.”
A forced marriage. The sheer finality of Renza's decree rooted Oshara to the floor. One week. Secure Dessa's stolen tech for the family, or be traded away like collateral.
