The Herald's Choice

Pavlo Solovyov’s gaze, usually so guileless, sharpened like a whetstone on Damir. The broken slate, its fractured runes glowing faintly, lay between them on the small table. Zofia stood, her posture unnaturally rigid, a shard of runic-glass still clutched in her hand.
“Hiding?” Damir’s voice was level, almost bored. He leaned back, crossing his arms, a calculated assessment of the boy before him. Pavlo was no longer the soft youth he’d found in the rural plains. The trials, the battles, the constant whispers of destiny had chiseled away at his naivete, leaving a hardier, more suspicious core.
“The Grand Magister’s sudden interest, the attacks on our supply lines, Irena’s illness – it’s all connected, isn’t it?” Pavlo pressed, his eyes darting to Zofia. “And this… this isn’t a simple supply ledger.” He gestured to the slate, a flicker of comprehension in his expression. “It smells of ancient lore.”
Damir exchanged a swift glance with Zofia. The partial truth. It was a perilous tightrope, but outright deception would shatter any trust remaining. He chose his words with deliberate care, each one a stone laid on a treacherous path.
“You are correct, Pavlo,” Damir said, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial register. “It is all connected. Kateryna Rostova’s plans run deeper than mere oversight. She sees your power, your potential, not as a gift to Varos, but as a tool for her own ambitions.”
Pavlo’s brow furrowed. “A tool? But… she speaks of me as the Herald of Dawn, the savior.”
“Such titles are easily bestowed,” Zofia interjected, her tone clipped, cutting through the pleasantries. “My mother seeks not to elevate you, but to control you. To bind your innate abilities, to twist them to her will. She intends to use you, Pavlo, as the final piece in a grand political maneuver to consolidate her power over every Handler house.”
Damir watched Pavlo's face, searching for a flinch or a twitch of refusal. The boy only stood still, taking in every syllable, knuckles resting hard against his sword belt. Skirmishes along the Miasma border and the constant surveillance of the Vanguard had worn off his earlier pliancy.
“She’s been testing you,” Damir continued, pushing the narrative. “Provoking you. Pushing you to grow, yes, but for her own ends. This slate… it details an ancient pact, a bloodline ritual that would allow her to exert a tyrannical influence over anyone who holds the title of the Herald.” He paused, allowing the gravity of the claim to settle. “She means to make you her personal weapon, Pavlo.”
Pavlo’s gaze fell to his hands, clenched into fists at his sides. The tent was silent save for the distant chirping of field-cicadas. Damir saw the tension pull at the corners of Pavlo's mouth. Pavlo had looked up to Rostova through every dispatch, treating her mandates as divine guidance; hearing this appraisal from her own daughter left him motionless.
“And Irena?” Pavlo finally asked, his voice barely a murmur. “Her visions… her illness…”
“Kateryna is attempting to exploit Irena’s spiritual sensitivity,” Zofia explained, her voice softening slightly. “To weaken her, to make her a conduit for her own schemes, to apply even more pressure on you. She wants to ensure your compliance through any means necessary.”
Damir offered a small, almost imperceptible nod. The partial truth. A lie by omission, but one that would save the world. If Pavlo understood the true nature of the entity sleeping inside him, the pure terror might break him, or worse, awaken the very thing they fought to suppress.
Pavlo lifted his head to meet Damir’s gaze. "You have never led me astray, Damir," he said, his voice steady. The boy he had trained like a hound, calculating feed and battle drills for a future slaughter, looked back with complete deference. The unearned confidence settled into Damir's chest like lead, an irritating friction against the grain of his objective.
"What do you need me to do?" Pavlo asked, standing straight beside the lamp.
“We plan to expose her,” Damir stated, the plan now fully articulated. “During the Great Unveiling ritual at the capital, when she expects to bind you, we will turn her scheme against her. We will make it appear as though the binding ritual has gone awry, that her power has corrupted you, unleashed a force beyond her control.”
Zofia stepped forward. “It will be a controlled display of power, Pavlo. Enough to shock the Assembly, to show them Kateryna’s manipulations, but not enough to cause true harm. I will ensure the slate, authenticated with my own runic seals, is presented as undeniable proof of her illicit intent.”
Pavlo listened, his gaze shifting between them. He nodded slowly, then firmly. “I understand. I will play my part. If Grand Magister Rostova seeks to wield me as a weapon, then I will become one against her.”
Damir had braced for arguments, panic, or denial. Pavlo's prompt compliance cleared the path ahead, yet it left a sour taste behind his teeth.
Preparations for the journey to the capital, Cygnus’s Perch, began immediately. The Herald’s party was already mobilized, expecting to join the main pilgrimage. Damir found himself overseeing the packing of arcane instruments and strategic maps, his mind already racing ahead to the intricate choreography of their deception.
One late afternoon, as the last rays of the sun painted the western horizon in hues of amber and violet, Damir saw them. Pavlo and Zofia stood near the perimeter of the mobile settlement, discussing the finer points of a newly designed runic ward. Pavlo gestured, an eager question on his face, and Zofia, typically so reserved, offered a small, genuine smile as she explained. There was an easy familiarity in how close they leaned over the parchment. Damir's fingers curled into his palms as he observed them from the shadow of the wagon. He forced his hand flat against his thigh. Zofia was an asset, just as Pavlo was a conduit. Nothing more.
He returned to his tent, the image of their easy companionship clinging to his mind. As he unrolled a tactical chart, a familiar shimmering text materialized before him.
