Chapter 8 of 10

Crash the Party

1.1k words

A squad of ten sentries, clad in onyx-plated auricweave with concussion gauntlets strapped to their forearms, stormed into the grand foyer. Their leader, a broad-shouldered man with a scar bisecting his left eyebrow, bellowed, “Perimeter secure! Search and seize Lord Al-Faris and the Relic!” Qadir snarled, pulling Taliyya behind a colossal jade urn. “They’ve breached the main entrance! We have to get to the vault, now!” Taliyya’s stealth suit, a second skin of adaptive chromatics, offered no resistance as he dragged her. Her mind, however, was already a whirl of tactical calculations. “Too many. We can’t brute force this.” “Then what?” he demanded, his voice tight with desperation. Safiya’s rattling cough echoed from the sickroom, a phantom sound that fueled his urgency. “We don’t have time for your parlor tricks, Taliyya!” A kinetic blast tore through the air where they’d just stood, pulverizing the jade urn into glittering dust. Shards rained down around them. Taliyya shoved Qadir forward, pulling a compact stun-dart launcher from a thigh holster. The playboy, used to charming his way out of trouble, gaped as she chambered a round. She moved. Not the clumsy, flailing socialite he knew, but a whisper of motion, a blur of practiced violence. Two darts thwipped into the necks of the nearest guards, who crumpled before their partners even registered the threat. Taliyya vaulted over a fallen pedestal, her movements economical, lethal. She landed lightly, her focus absolute, her every action a precise stroke in a rapidly unfolding combat symphony. The guards, trained for brute force and overwhelming numbers, faltered against her unpredictable efficiency. A third fell, then a fourth, each dispatched with a quick, decisive strike to a nerve cluster or a pressure point. She wasn’t fighting; she was dismantling. Qadir watched, transfixed and horrified. The woman he had teased, paraded, and inexplicably developed an obsession for, was a force of nature. Her small frame, once draped in the ridiculous ruffles of high society, now moved with the predatory grace of a huntress. He saw a flash of silver as she disarmed a guard, wrenching the bronze gauntlet away with a dull crack, then using its back-discharge to knock another man senseless. The casual brutality, the sheer, unyielding competence, was a chilling spectacle. And yet, beneath the horror, a dangerous, primal heat stirred within him. This was the true Taliyya, stripped bare of pretense, and she was breathtakingly terrifying. “Are you just going to stand there, Al-Faris?” Taliyya’s voice was a low, urgent hiss, cutting through the chaos. “Move!” He snapped out of his trance, grabbing a discarded stun-rifle from a downed guard. “Right!” He fired a clumsy burst, managing to clip an approaching mercenary in the shoulder. His aim was appalling, but his intent was clear. He was fighting, for Safiya, for… her. They fought their way across the opulent foyer, past priceless art and delicate sculptures now marred by scorch marks and blaster fire. The guards regrouped, their numbers still heavy, their advance relentless. A concentrated barrage of concussive bolts pinned them behind a fallen chandelier. “This isn’t working!” Qadir shouted over the din, desperation gnawing at him. He saw the Vault Warden emerge from a side corridor, smiling thinly and clutching a sleek, black data-slate. Suddenly, the very foundations of the estate vibrated. A guttural roar, followed by a deafening crash, ripped through the air. The ornate stained-glass window above the main entrance exploded inward, showering the foyer with glittering shards of light. A colossal, chrome-plated floating carriage, emblazoned with the crest of House Zariq, had literally smashed its way through the exterior wall, its front wheels embedded deep in the marble floor. Zariq, his usually immaculate silks torn at the hem, stood triumphantly amidst the wreckage, his heavy brass signet rings flashing as he scattered a cluster of stunned guards. “Unhand her, you brutes!” he shrieked, his voice carrying surprising volume. “You won’t lay a single, grubby hand on my sweet, innocent friend, Taliyya! Not while I, Zariq Al-Nuri, draw breath!” The vault guard, caught completely off guard, hesitated. This was not part of their briefing. A chaotic melee erupted as Zariq, surprisingly agile for all his theatrics, swung a heavy ceremonial scepter, inadvertently cracking two breastplates and creating a much-needed diversion. He truly believed he was Taliyya’s valiant protector, and in his bewildered arrogance, he was remarkably effective. “Zariq?” Qadir muttered, dumbfounded. “What in the blazes is he doing?” “A distraction,” Taliyya said, already sprinting towards the vault corridor. “A very loud, very Zariq distraction. Come on!” They broke free of the main engagement, Qadir surprisingly keeping pace with Taliyya’s agile movements. But the Warden had anticipated this. He raised his discharge gauntlet, aiming a focused blast directly at Taliyya’s spine. “Taliyya, look out!” Qadir screamed, his voice raw with a terror she’d never heard. He shoved her forward with all his might, throwing himself into the path of the devastating energy bolt. The kinetic blast hit him square in the chest with a sickening thud, ripping through his auricweave jacket and sending him sprawling. His body convulsed once, then lay still, a rapidly spreading crimson stain blossoming across his pristine white shirt. “Qadir!” Taliyya cried out, her voice a strangled gasp. The mission, the relic, the very air in her lungs, ceased to matter. She knelt beside him, her hands trembling as they hovered over the grievous wound. His eyes were open, unfocused, but a faint, pained smile touched his lips. “Safiya,” he whispered, his breath coming in ragged gasps, “save… Safiya…” The Warden, seizing the moment, made a dash for the heavy adamantine vault door. With a triumphant sneer, he slapped the data-slate against the biometric scanner. The massive door hissed open, revealing a blinding white light from within. He slipped inside, a final, mocking laugh echoing as the vault door slammed shut with a reverberating clang. Then, an ear-splitting klaxon blared from within the vault itself. A deep, resonant voice, synthesized and devoid of emotion, filled the air: “WARNING. SUN-WEAVER RELIC CONTAINMENT FIELD INTEGRITY CRITICAL. FINAL MELTDOWN SEQUENCE INITIATED. ESTATE-WIDE VAPORIZATION IMMINENT IN THREE MINUTES.” The entire mansion shuddered, a deep tremor rumbling beneath their feet. The white light from the vault intensified, pulsing with dangerous energy, visible through the reinforced seams of the door. Taliyya looked from Qadir’s bleeding form to the ticking clock of annihilation. Three minutes. Three minutes until everything, everyone, was gone.
