Chapter 4 of 10
The Midnight Tango

Music swelled from the suspended mezzanine, heavy with brass and the low thrum of gravity crystals calibrated to half-weight. Floating platters of spun sugar drifted past women in gowns weighted with actual gold leaf. Taliyya scanned the vaulted ceiling, tracking the patrol routes of the Zenith Wardens. She had forty minutes before the sub-basement security rotated, forty minutes before Qadir Al-Faris threw away his life trying to pry open an unstable arcane dynamo with amateur tools.
She took one step toward the eastern corridor when fingers locked around her bare waist.
"Leaving so soon, darling?"
Qadir pulled her flush against his chest. His velvet tailcoat lacked its usual frivolous brooch; under the fine silk, his ribs felt rigid, his heart thudding through three layers of organza. His smile was dazzling, wide, and entirely dead behind the pupils.
"Qadir!" Taliyya chirped, forcing her gaze into glossy pools of vapid innocence. "You startled me! I was simply hunting for more of those delightfully pink puff-pastries. The ones shaped like little swans!"
"The pastry cart can wait." Without asking, he pivoted on his heel, dragging her directly onto the mirror-polished basalt floor of the ballroom. "We owe the patrons a spectacle. They're wagering on whether you'll trip over your own train, and I have eighty thousand credits riding on your balance."
The orchestra launched into the *Khorassan*, a punishing, predatory tango imported from the lower rim. Gravity flickered down to twenty percent as the ballroom's central dampener engaged. Couples lifted an inch off the floor with every pivot, spinning on cushions of manipulated air.
He dragged her into the first dip with brutal grace.
His hand splayed across her lower back, pressing her so tightly against his hip she could feel the cold, rigid outline of a concealed disruption chisel hidden beneath his lapel. The idiot had brought iron to crack an acoustic wards.
"You're quite tense tonight, Qadir," she whispered, her lips skimming the sharp curve of his ear as he spun her beneath his arm. Her bubbly tone dropped an octave, sharpened at the edges.
"Merely keeping up appearances," he murmured back, hauling her against his chest with a snap that knocked the air from her lungs. His fingers dug through her silk, anchoring her like she was the only fixed point in an archipelago falling out of the sky. "You vanished from the salon earlier. For nearly twenty minutes."
"A lady has delicate powders to touch up!"
"You smell like basement dust and damp sulfur, Taliyya. Not powder." He threw her out into an extended spin, then yanked her back by the wrist, catching her against his torso before her feet touched stone. His thumb grazed the hollow of her collarbone, pressing hard against the faint imprint left by her harness strap. His gaze locked onto hers, dark with manic exhaustion. "Who sent you?"
"Oh, goodness, your grip is awfully tight!" She laughed, a high, musical giggle, but she hooked her inside heel behind his ankle and subtly shifted her center, ready to snap his knee backward if his hand wandered an inch higher toward her collar. "Are all the boys from the Al-Faris clan this rough with their playthings?"
"Don't play dumb. Not tonight." His breath warmed her cheek, erratic and sharp. "Stay out of the lower wings. Whatever you think you're looking for, it isn't worth dying for."
"I don't know what you mean! I just adore looking at your family's gilded portraits—"
The music hit a crescendo. With a calculated smile, Taliyya pretended to lose her footing in the low-gravity drop. She slumped against him, let her diamond-dusted skirts tangle around his legs, and used the chaos of their tangled landing to slip away through the parting crowd of clattering aristocrats before he could reassert his grip.
"Excuse me! So terribly clumsy!" she squeaked, curtsying haphazardly to an aghast duchess before darting into the service passageway.
She abandoned the dimpled smile the moment the heavy brass door clicked shut behind her.
Taliyya sprinted down the service stairs, stripping off her silk gloves to expose palms lined with brass bypass runes. She smelled ozone before she even reached the landing. It smelled like scorched zinc and burning hair.
That reckless, suicidal fool had slipped down while she was escaping the floor without waiting.
At the far end, the primary vault gate was already weeping iridescent sparks. Qadir knelt before the primary lockbox, his hands slick with sweat, prying at the seam with an iron wedge. The runic matrix above him was glowing a furious, blinding violet. A perimeter flare. In three seconds, the magical snare would ground itself through his ribcage, frying his nervous system instantly.
"Wait, you idiot!" Taliyya hissed, breaking into a dead sprint.
Qadir whipped his head around under the blue glare. "Get out of here!"
Refusing to waste breath, she threw herself sideways, faking an uncoordinated stumble. "Whoopsie daisy!"
She slammed directly into him, knocking him flat onto the cold flagstones just as a white-hot spear of arcing energy sliced through the empty space where his head had been. In the same motion, her left palm struck the base of the control housing. Skipping any crude iron pick, she drove her bypass rune into the third node of the resonance coil, snapping the circuit with an intentional surge that caused the console to belch a cloud of black smoke and die.
The snare dissipated into a shower of harmless embers.
Qadir stared up at her from the floor, his chest heaving, stunned by the near-miss. "What did you just..."
"Oh dear!" Taliyya wailed, scrambling backward and clutching her skirts. "I slipped on the marble! Is this the furnace? Did I break the stove?"
Heavy iron boots clattered on the iron grating above. The guards had heard the discharge.
"Intruder alert in Sub-Level Two! Form up!"
"Down here!" Qadir grabbed her forearm, hauling her toward a recessed alcove, but the tunnel was straight, narrow, and devoid of cover. The guards were rounding the corner.
"Stop right there, you insolent, low-born swine!"
A voice boomed from the stairwell. Zariq.
The sound of the boots abruptly halted. "My lord Zariq? We are responding to an alarm—"
"I don't give a damn about your squeaking rat-traps!" Zariq bellowed, his voice dripping with imperious, venomous outrage. "Who authorized the serving of sea-urchin tarts that are lukewarm? Lukewarm! My palate is a national treasure, you troglodytes! Look at this pastry! Look at it! Smelling like bilge water while my guests choke on dry caviar! Call the head chef down here this instant or I will buy this entire wing and turn it into a stable for my draft lizards!"
"Sir, the primary ward tripped—"
"The only thing tripped is my patience! Detail four of you to fetch the steward! Now!"
Taliyya seized the split second of the glorious, arrogant idiot's intervention. She yanked Qadir by his lapels into the nearest utility closet, sliding the reinforced panel shut until it clicked on its silent mag-latch.
The space was barely two feet deep, smelling of pine solvent and polished copper.
They were mashed together, chests compressed, their faces inches apart in the pitch blackness. She registered the rapid shudder of his ribs against hers, the heat radiating off his skin. His breath came fast, ragged, brushing the crook of her neck.
"You saved my life," he whispered, his voice stripped bare of every lie, every velvet cadence, raw with a terror that had nothing to do with guards. "You stumbled... but you never lost your footing. Who are you?"
Taliyya stayed frozen, refusing to give him an inch. Her mission brain was calculating escape trajectories, the distance to the vent shaft, the twenty days left before the relic tore this sky-island apart.
Then, the tiny brass earpiece nestled deep inside her left ear canal hissed with static.
*"Taliyya, pull out now,"* Nizar's voice murmured, low, intimate, and urgent through the transceiver. *"The perimeter is swarming. I'm waiting on the skiff below. Come home to me, sweet girl. Don't let that useless aristocrat get you killed."*
In the suffocating silence of the closet, the high-gain receiver bled sound into the dark.
Qadir went rigid as iron.
The vulnerability evaporated from him in an instant, replaced by something dark, feral, and suffocating. His hand shot out, his long fingers wrapping entirely around the delicate curve of her throat—not squeezing, but pinning her against the back wall of the closet until she was trapped fast.
His head tilted down, his mouth grazing her ear where the tiny copper device rested, his voice dropping into a lethal, venomous rasp.
"Who the fuck is talking to you?"
